Sadly YouTube has a 15 minute limit on uploads. Not enough room for Mr. Universe. I may upload another video featuring that song and a couple others as well.
Cheers for posting, great stuff. I spotted this album on cd back in the early 90's but foolishly thought twice about purchasing it (may'be it was Ian's scary face on the cover that put me off, ha ha). Yeah it's long since been deleted. Correct me if i'm wrong but i think Second Sight and Fighting Man off Mr Universe were from these sessions. Liam Genockey went on to do session work for Gerry Rafferty (RIP) which was slightly lighter music.
Several of the songs off the 1978 "Gillan" LP later appeared on the "Mr. Universe" (1979) LP, but they were entirely different recordings altogether (not different takes), as the band lineup was different on each album. With the exception of Colin Towns (keyboards) who remained the from the "Gillan" LP.
The version of the song "Fighting Man" found on the Mr. Universe LP was however taken from the Japanese "Gillan" LP sessions and remixed.
@drprogensteinphp Correct, but let's be very clear..the mastering/production and sound quality of the Acrobat UK Mr Universe is poor, whereas this Gillan Japan LP is actually one of the finest sounding records in the whole Deep Purple & Family catalogue. I've loved mine since 1978. It is a hi-fi demonstration recording.
Yes...I explained that they were different recordings in my initial comment/reply to you. The fact that the "Gillan" LP was pressed on virgin Japanese vinyl goes without saying, as in most cases Japanese vinyl surpasses others, with a few exceptions of course. Though not a true Hi-Fi quality in the sense of the original Japanese MFSL, Mastered At Half Speed, Discwasher, or Sheffield Lab recordings, it was still vastly superior to any run of the mill pressing during that time.
Also, the Japanese version of the Mr. Universe album found in Japan/New Zealand is different from the one released in the UK/Europe. But that's a whole other story in itself :)
@drprogensteinphp Cheers for all that info, much appreciated. There's a couple of great clips on here from '78 (Barnacle/Byrd lineup) doing Secret of The Dance and another song (which escapes me) from a Japanese TV show. In think the '93 cd issue had some of the Jap/NZ versions on it as well. Simon Robinson from the DPAS may have had something to do with that reissue. I might try and get it from a third party seller on Amazon (if it's not too pricey).
Yes, I did notice those clips awhile ago....Pete Barnacle is a fantastic drummer. I have a couple early 80s albums by the band "Girl" in which he played. That band also featured Phil Collen(guitars) pre-Def Leppard if I'm not mistaken.
Steve Byrd is also a great guitarist...too bad we didn't see more of him.
Good luck in finding a copy. If I stumble upon something I'll let you know :)
@drprogensteinphp Thanks again. I had a look on Amazon, the cheapest i saw it (used) was about 18 quid. Not really willing to go that far for it, more like a tenner would suffice (have to watch the pennies). I was suprised it wasn't reissued/remastered along with all the other Gillan remasters a couple of years back but maybe the company doesn't have the licence to put it out on their label.
Big Deep Purple fan and never heard of this, Cool Stuff, Do you have the Roger Glover lp, Butterfly Ball ? Dereck and I were talking tonite about Gypsy. Any thoughts on a Gypsy Video ? Thanks for all the Great Music.
Yes I have the Butterfly Ball LP. I also have an old VHS copy of the movie layin' around somewhere. No plans on Gypsy video. I was never that big a fan of the album, sorry.
Ian Gillan Band, Gillan, Ian Gillan, Deep Purple, Garth Rockett & the Moonshiners, Black Sabbath, Episode Six, Ian Gillan & Mihalis Rakintzis, and Ian Gillan & Roger Glover. Outside that, not much else comes to mind :)
Lol...I saw a video awhile ago where I recognized a few Uriah Heep (Demons & Wizards/Magicians Birthday) spines within a guys collection.
Production is pretty basic...Windows 7 Movie Maker. The only tedious part to making them is photographing/scanning the various images, cover artwork, labels etc. It's become a hobby over the last couple years or so. I tend to poke away at them while the wife paints.
Thanks for the up..
