  • paiste and sabian never sounded so good together

  • Why can't people just respect the percussive genius going on here? Why do they have to argue about every tiny little fucking thing?

  • Chad Wackerman's Technicality is amazing, along with Terry Bozzio's keen sense of music. Crazy!

  • Goddamn. I've been drumming for 12 years and I've been watching Terry Bozzio for about 8 years.

Forgive me for my immaturity but I just realized after that Terry Looks like Liam Neeson.

  • @drummakid101

I HAVE THOUGHT THAT FOR YEARS!!!! He looks like Liam Neeson with darker hair.

  • I don't agree with the "vs." description.... they are playing together, not against each other.

  • Chad won!

  • @IanTheDinosaur nobody wons... they are playing together, not against each other...

  • bozzio's enjoying himself! he was always physically, as well as musically expressive. chad has always looked laid back. they are both great drummers .... as for bozzio not deserving the kit?!?!?!? ... that's just a really dumb thing to say

    a) he has certainly paid his dues

    b) he actually put this baby together

    c) he is trying to step outside of the kick/snare box, by playing some melodies

    d) it's not just about fast rolls, just like guitar isn't just about fast runs

    critics make me sick

  • Q: Why don't bar bands play zappa? A: THEY CAN"T

  • I like Terry because he got to fuck Dale.

But I admire Chad because he looks like he;s having more fun!

  • ZAPPA!!!!

  • chad is much more sophisticated and technical than terry.

  • @jjmora05 chad is great but more sophisticated and technical than Terry? That is very overstated, Terry and Chad are great but Terry is far more a musical genious, look up some of his music he played in Zappa, it doesnt get any harder than that.

  • pega uma enxada e vai trabalhar de verdade!!!!

  • This isn't One verses the Other, it's more like a Duet of Drums! or The Dance of Two Drummers, one leads and the other follows, then the other one leads and the other one follows. I don't think anyone won, it just looks like Terry is working really hard, and Chad is just smiling and enjoying whats going on!

  • wow

  • Bozzio has too many faces as toms in that drum set :D

  • @TheRealErnestogod Hahahaha, u made me laugh!

  • Comment removed

  • Those aren't drum sets, those are fortresses. And they're not just drummers, they're musicians. Keep it up, you two.

  • @TouchingYou Did you just claim Terry Bozzio, to NOT be a compositional drummer? 0.0 This is your first time seeing him, isn't it....

  • Gee im a born Bozzio fanatic, but I think Chad won this one.

  • its like every genre in one

  • chad does win here for sure, but you gotta love terry's individualism (and orgasms). easily my favorite drummet of all time, and chads only like 2 spots under him. awesome video! and to whoever was talking crap about zappa... take a hike. just because you dont understand his music doesnt mean you can call it weak and awful.

  • Very nice

  • What stroke roll is from 1:47 to 1:49 just the snare with no toms...... Please help

  • @drnnhvcdsde Just a single stroke roll with some accents.

  • Terry is OWNED!

  • @timvlee1

Bozzio always gets owned by Wackerman when they play together. Chad has so much more style and elegance, and is in so much more control of the situation. Wackerman is an artist; Bozzio is a technician.

  • Awesome Camera Work!

  • Chad's Snare drum ...........OMFG!!!

  • classic/epic! champions!

  • Missing Persons, as good as they were, could have been so much more.

  • @51Thundersticks agreed they got too ambitious after the succes of spring session M, and went exepermential too early with rhyme and reason, when terry switched to an all eletronic set. they should have stayed more basic, kept ken scott as producer put out another hard edge new wave pop record, bulit the fan base, then gone experimental.

  • we need more drummers who are COMPOSERS. both of these guys lack MUSICALITY. I fucking wrote a POP song that is 100% CYMBALS ferchrissakes! Even my most complicated drumparts you can HUM!

  • @TouchingYou Bozzio does not lack musicality. Check out songs like "Samba Ousado" and then say that again.

  • @Oxpost If he had MUSICALITY, then ALL his pieces would be great COMPOSITIONS. You can't just cherry pick a few that fit this. That's cheating! (It's like calling a priest a molester and he finds you 3 kids who say he did NO molest them! BO-gus!)

  • @TouchingYou No they wouldn't. Zappa was a musical genius who composed orchestral scores, but he still had some extremely weird and down right awful stuff on some of his albums. Almost all of Bozzios solos are great compositions just look further than this vid and you'll see that too.

  • @Oxpost I've heard almost everything Zappa's done and most of it ws weak in my opinion. I like early Mothers the best probably. Zappa had no heart. His stuff is too academic. Listen to "5% For Nothing" by YES to hear GREAT complex music with heart. Or Emerson Lake & Palmer's first 5 albums. But if you like zappa than more power to you

  • @TouchingYou No heart. You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

  • art

  • I didn't know Alan Ruck (Cameron from Ferris Bueller's Day Off) is such an amazing drummer. Gotta love the similarities between various celebrities. Even if they are a couple generations off.

  • Chad is from way back I recall hearing that name in Mordern Drummer early 80's or so? I never really heard him till just now. That dude has some game but to try and play is the same sand box as Terreigh? Well...There just isin't anybody alive drumming that punishes those skins like Mr Bozzio. It was Bonham but he's gone for years. now I remember that day when it was announced. Sad it was...RIP Bonzo

  • Just seems like the technicality of some of the other drummers isn't there. Sure there is a lot of movement all over the set but watch someone like Beauford, Buddy rich, even Barker for some of his solos and the fundamentals run deeper. Not to say that both of these guys aren't much better than me, but they're just all over the board.

  • 3:16-3:20 Terry looks like a kid in a candy shop, the passion is unreal!

  • Doesn't Chad kinda look like Cameron from Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Doesn't he??

  • Amazing duo.Excellent beat.Done with great feel combined.

  • übertriiebenes Kit

  • screw terry. he is showing off. he doesnt need all that he barely touches all that shit.

  • @KurdtKobain09

Lol, you obviously know nothing about Bozzio's drumming style.

He uses pretty much all of it. It's because he plays melodys on his kit. He might not use it all on every track, but he doesn need it to be able to play melodys. A think one row is chromatic and one diatonic or something...

  • @KurdtKobain09 The thing is that he's good enough to be able to show off!

  • @KurdtKobain09

Thing is, he doesn't need to use every bit of his kit in order to compose a song.

  • Super Mad, but Terry looks like a rat on acid.

    Love it.

  • Hey, what the....one my tom-toms is missing!

  • @JoeJacari Playing music keeps you young!! :D

  • Chad was way better

  • Wow. That's one of the few examples of musical drumming you can come across. Fab!

  • i bet chad finished setting up his drum kit and sat around waiting for terry to get his setup XD

  • I'm not the least interested in any of these drummers; i'm just looking for ideas on tuning and configuring my drum set.

  • I pity the guy who has to put all those drums en cymbals in their covers... but I love the video, such a great intensity in their playing

  • Terry's 60 years old? Damn! That's one timeless drummer. He looks and plays great for 60. Anyone would be proud to age so gracefully. He looks 15-20 years younger!

  • Comment removed

  • i know Chad. he works with my school marching band sometimes

  • wonder why they need a so big drum kit ^^

  • REASON I WAS EVER INTERESTED IN PLAYING DRUMS.Been listening to and watching Bozzio live since he was 30. the greatest

  • Don't worry when someone says that the reason you don't "get" Terry Bozzio is because he plays over your head. He plays over his own head too! That's the whole point of his style -- he goes out on a limb to find sounds and rhythms he's never heard before, to keep creative and discovering. It takes guts to do that and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. A lot of the stuff he does he probably couldn't explain to you anyway, because he doesn't understand it himself. And he shouldn't.

  • What would Buddy Rich have thought? I think he may have just quit altogether after seeing this god like exhibition of sickness. Every single not written down and played exactly as written. No improv. Genius.

  • @eqsmooth buddy rich is so much better then that bozzio faggot.. buddy rich new how to play jazz, type in terry bozio jazz and laugh at his pathetic attempt at it.

  • WOW! big time troll! you are. Ought to be ashamed of yourself. There is no reason for your comment. Buddy was possibly our greatest drummer but he could only play big band jazz.. He was so obsessed with it. In the 1970's none one wanted to hear it. He could only get a gig at high schools. I've met Rich (1978 & 1984) and Bozzio (1991). Buddy was a prick. Everyone knows that. Terry is a true original, never known for jazz but has played w/every great creator in the business. Now, go to your room.

  • @eqsmooth well, thanks for the little tid bit but that does not negate the fact that bozzio blows, big deal he plays dynamically and has an excessive amount of drums.. show me a video where he plays something that requires a great deal of limb independence.

  • You don't know shit & you are a very bad student. Bozzio has played for countless geniuses. Not one sane person in the world would say Terry blows. If they did it would be due to jealousy. He tunes his drums to notes. For what he wishes to accomplish he needs all those cymbals & drums. Can I tell whether he needs and uses 7 kick drums? So what? He made nearly 35 albums w/the Zappas alone. One must be great to play w/Zappa. He's recorded w/Jeff Beck. He's 60 and eats your lunch. Totally original.

  • HOT

  • Wow, who won?

  • all these arm chair drum addicts have no clue what these true musicians have done for MODERN drumming....just enjoy what your listining to and appriciate what these guys and a large host of others have done to put this primitive instrument on the map the last 100 years...we went from being compared to banging monkeys to accomplished composers, band leaders and respected musicians..if ya dont cant process what your hearing go buy a lady ga ga record

  • @rr1313rr I love you

  • @LonelliCyd09 thanks

  • @rr1313rr

Thats right IF somebody could play like Terry Bozzio or Chad Wakerman he would ve the right to say

    They arent THAT great

IF the cant play like them they should shut up

Your comment is one of the smartest i ve seen i years under a music video

Bozzio and Wakerman played The Black Page when they were only 23 years old

  • God, they do what so few drum duets can, they really listen to each other and respond to what one another is playing. It really does sound like an intimate conversation between the kits, even while they play such a technical part each.

    That's really beautiful.

  • At 3:16 : Holy Shit!

  • Colaiuta!

  • wackerman!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Bozzio is by far the best drummer I've ever seen live. But I have to be honest. Since going out on his own he's gone SO far out he's lost most people who might otherwise enjoy his talent. Ostinato after ostinato, trill after trill, then a sudden burst of brilliance to reconnect with the audience, only to do it all again. Genius is one thing, but if your art becomes so esoteric people start thinking Barker or Jordison or Portnoy deserve your throne, you've blown it. Get back in a band, Terry.

  • @owlcu .... Although I really enjoy Terry`s solo drums you do have a point . I remember seeing him with Missing Persons in their prime ... he was like a caged animal , attacking the drums ... vicious flams , and double bass bombs .... a great showman , writer , and drummer .... to those of us who enjoy his solo drums , all those qualities are still there but I agree that he really shines in a band situation

  • I really thought I'd never say this, but there comes a point when too many drums looks like you're sitting in a drum store, not a drum kit. I have a lot of drums, but within reason. Terry's just outta control there. Never been a big Bozzio fan. Great polyrhythms do wonders for me also, but so do a lot of other aspects of drumming, which appear to be lacking here. In all, it's good and decent stuff and looks fun, but the drums are more impressive, which should never be the case.

  • The guy from true blood has a double "life"!

I had the joy to see Chad live with Alan Holdsworth a few years back, great show.

  • boooooooooooo

  • BORED

  • OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOR

    PLUR.

  • so much drumm for nothin' come on.......

  • Agreed on Chad, grooves move me more than tech skill. However, there's a place and time for each. I can only dream of possessing even a hint of their talent...

  • they both played 4 zappa and you need a considerable amount of skill 2 do that

  • I prefer Chad Wackerman

  • Both obviously amazing, I give the edge to Chad. To echo some of the others here, its all about the groove. Chad has more of it than Terry. That's just personal preference of course, but I think if you put them both behind simple 3 or 5 piece kits you would see the difference in talent and imagination come out even more clearly. Its easy to sound that good (ok not THAT good like these two) when you have a ton of gear, but strip it down to basics and see what happens

  • Oh what i would do to play on the same kit terry and chad play... you have no idea...

  • Terry Bozzio... :)

  • .. i dont know about you guys, but here's my take on the group of people who appreciates this kind of music - VIRTUOSITY. There are really people who has transcended into a higher form of music, not the mainstream type of music, im not saying mainstream is bad, but to those people who craves for perfection and absolute musical bliss, they listen to these kind of stuff. i'm one of them, i listen to vai, rudess and all those music-gods whom only a few can understand.

  • It still and will forever amaze how bozzio can have four bassdrums and still use them. not to mention the 3 hats and other percussion controlled by his feet.

  • No WAY is there a drummer called Whacker-Man!!

  • And Terry Bozzio wins!!!

  • wackerman for me...his grooves are awesome but bozzio is a tech legend

  • @ultimatefighter187 Grooves over tech! always.

  • The Vinnie Colaiuta of 1979-81 would eat these two alive.

  • @DocTurner wow...the "Buffalo" album is a goldmine for every crazy drummer

  • Wackerman's playing backup.

  • waoo q loco este vs de Terry Bozzio con Chad Wackerman

  • just had a drum clinic with Chad tonight his dad is my jazz band teacher :)))))))

  • chad rox .... !! :D

  • I got to see these guys perform The Black Page in Ft. Lauderdale. Watching them in person left me in sensory overload.

  • having enormous sets to me doesn't mean that much.the set doesn't make the drummer,it's the other way around.i mean these guys totally kick ass,but i think they could give the same results with half of their kits..i don't like bozzio's kit.i prefer chad's,but generally i like portnoy's better :)

  • You should watch the video of Bozzio's kit being set up. In it he explains the logic ehind it, that it's not about having the most drums and there is a purpose behind having so many. He creates melodies by having them tuned chromatically and diatonically. He couldn't accomplish what he does by having less drums. Your average technical drummer can't do with a regular kit what bozzio does with his own.

  • your comment is the shit... mike portnoy as the perfect set because its really 2 sets and chads is cool to just bigger than portnoy

  • @nickoo2nickoo2 You can never say someone has the perfect set. What works for Portnoy will absolutely fail for someone else. There's so many different factors for a good set. Drum shells, drum heads, number and size of toms, snares, and bass drums, cymbal company, cymbal models, various percussion, pedals, beaters, sticks...

  • 3:16 xxDDD

  • If i made faces like Terry does when i played the drums, I would quit playing

  • Bozzio haters go away. You have no clue. These guys are in tune if you know what I mean.

  • looks like he's trying to pinch a Huge loaf..... that aside... 2 awesome drummers :D

  • If i made the faces that Terry makes when i played the drums i would quit

  • Frank Zappa (sadly missed) sure could spot a talented drummer when he saw one........

  • @thekierongiles You couldn't have said it any better. =]

  • @thekierongiles or two...or three...or four...and so forth.

  • @thekierongiles ....Amen.

  • I want to see the Terry Bozzio conversation with Rahzel.

  • I dont know how many times I've watched this video, but every time I do, it is still as badass as the first.

  • Awesome!!!!!!

P.S. Wonder how much those sets cost.

  • That was cool. I enjoyed it.

  • Awsome, Chad laid down an awsome base for Bozzio to work on. Perfection!

  • Comment removed

  • @skidrum11

You are exactly right. It's the whole reason Zappa's music was not found much on the radio...most people just don't have the capability to hear what is really going on. They just want to hear some fast one, two, three, four...just give 'em some whippin' post. All of Zappa's musicians were the best in the industry.

  • @skidrum11 The reason some people do not like his drumming is because he is not that good. If your play an instrument and people don't "get it", well somthing is wrong there. Also he looks like a half wit with that 400 piece kit. lol

  • @skidrum11 i love polyrythems :D:D

  • @skidrum11 You either like him or you don't. It is personal subjective taste not maturity. I've met him several times and went to school w/his sister. He was no big deal at my college. Just a star for people who were into that style. Is he one of the greatest? Maybe, for me he is.

  • 3:14... doesn't seem possible, doesn't sounds possible... as amateur i think chad is much better

  • You people are way off. Did any of you read the title? "A Private Conversation in Music." They're talking, not competing. Neither is better. One is simply Chad Wackerman, the other is simply Terry Bozzio. That's it.

  • Terry Bozzio can do everything Chad can.

Chad cannot do some things Terry can...

That's enough for me to say Terry.

  • bozzio way of holding his sticks still boggles me..he is holding like chopsticks but hits like a logger

  • Wackerman. all the way.

    He's so fluid.

  • To think that Terry B is almost 60 years old, and is playing this cool shit with those skills, brings hope and happiness to my world...

  • Dennis Chambers.

  • I came

  • yes, Vinnie is a monster too!

    and let's not forget Chambers.

  • :-) xTjPx

You did meant C Thompson ?

  • Terrys great and Chad too, but THE best Zappa drummer ??

Vinnie Colaiuta, and that very objective and sustainable position :-)

  • Yes, I agree Vinnie is a better drummer, more schooled and more technical... But I prefer Terry Bozzio! He's more valuable to me. Terry is a once-every-hundred-years crazy artist, more musical and more creative.

  • Chad is still the best.

    period.

    that's objective and sustainable.

    :-)

  • Terry Bozzio is an effin' BOZO! Totally over-rated. His "fame" is only due to his over-compensating drumset. (That has no crash cymbals) What a freakin' tool.

    Chad...now he's got the goods!

  • Comment removed

  • Just imagine cleaning all that!!! MY GOD maybe take about 2 month excluding the Cymbals.

  • Chad is the best drummer alive,

  • That's incredibly subjective and unsustainable.

  • Yeah, I crack up when some of these freaks mistaken their personal biases and tastes for some kind of universal and objective truth. Annoys me to no end, not just for music related stuff but everything. And when you question them, they can't substantiate their statements, aside from beating you over the head with their opinions and feelings....That's why I rarely bother debating with youtubers anymore. It's a waste of time...

  • Terry is fantastic. I've never seen him live. I've seen Chad many times with Holdsworth, and his style fit with that music perfectly. Great Video!

  • Wow ... Wackerman still looks like a teenager LOL :)

    Fantastic video!

  • i don't like them so much

  • i hear this stuff all the time! it's very good but it's not fresh! double kick pedals is all they focus on!

  • The 2 main Zappa drummers for the most part.

  • Ha, Ha, They're called minus-the-cata!

  • what are the quiet notes after the loud notes called

  • tis is very impressive but unless he was doing accents with his feet, the double bass pattern @ the beginning is pretty sloppy but Bozzio ain't that kind of drummer plus the sound quality on the bass is so bad I can't clearly tell if he's doing accents or not. I doubt even he could do double bass accents though. I also hope he can't too bcuz double bass is the only thing I have up on him, if he's doing accents now I'm gonna kill myself lol

  • Lol he can. I actually heard him in some kinda interview talking about how when his double bassing doesn't need accents (like straight-up metal style stuff, etc.) he usually uses the heel-up method, but when he's accenting them he uses heel down for greater control. XD

  • it is drum masturbation

  • Chad plays so effortlessly and looks well normal..... real clean cut. Terri always made the faces and had a personal style that is more out there... I enjoy both these drummers. As a drummer for a long time I get bored with too long drum solos or even drum battles, but this is fantastic and entertaining, grooves and is musical. It really is great because Chad has so much discipline and really listens to Terri and compliment him. When two drummers get together, often it becomes un-musical.

  • That's so badass. I'm so jealous. Like woahhh :D

  • Thats music!

  • dope

  • Having a big drum set doesn't make you bad. It doesn't automatically make you good, you can play amazing on a rly small one (aka John Bonham). having a bigger one just gives more options and a wider range to play with.

Both just accommodate different styles of playing.

  • I agree but both terry and chad are both extremely talented

  • Funny to see some footage of Wackerman with a few extra years on him. Until now I've only seen footage of him filmed on Zappa's 1984 tour.

  • deftone is a wimp an wish he could do this.. uh the reason for so many drums is if you listen they all make a differant sound/pitch.. this is awsome.. no def go get on your machine and try to do this u fake ass rapper hahahaha

  • What's with the overly exaggerated facial expressions?

  • bozzio got fucking emo shoes lols

  • then who do u sapose is up to his level of musicanship? couluta? wekel? theres ony a few

  • ok YES! about to piss a bunch of people off YES! Theres really no need for a big ass drum set like that YES! Ill rip um nicely for a brief second YES! Im sure Terry is a great drummer in his own right but this shit was rather boring KNOW THAT! Definitely listened to the same shit over and over for 4minutes and 47 seconds ILL BOMB THE NIGGA YES!

  • There was this dude at the county fair and he had a big drumset and he was all right but I kinda wanted to get up there with him and fill in some notes. Terry and Chad don't need to fill in anything with each other. They leave no note unturned.

  • es mucho ruido para mi una bateria nomas no se entiende nada lo que pasa ni lo que suena

  • I like how Wackerman's drumset looks normal compared to Bozzio's
