I speak a German dialect that is close to Dutch so I understand most of the words. i.e. Slang=Schlang, oog=üag, Paard=Peat, roos=roos, wolken=wolke, Zijlboot=Säajelboot, but thank God we don't use that ridiculous guttural G and our accent I find to be much prettier, it sounds like old Norse but with Spanish Rs while I don't even know how to explain the Dutch.

queenymax, you have no idea how English is difficult to pronounce! I'm Brazilian and I assure you that Dutch pronunciation is rather easy before English! It is a pain to pronounce the English D and the T, for example, as a matter of fact it's very hard to pronounce ALL the English consonants!

that's totally true. I'm Flemish (Belgium) so my motherlanguage is also dutch, and it's true that speaking the TH is hard for us, but still, flemish people can speak over 4 languages: dutch, french,english and german, so i still think we do a good job :D

Hmm, if anything, I'd say Dutch is the bridge between English and German.

Old English had a lot of words that Dutch uses still like kirk for church etc. but we drifted apart over time.

It's easy to understand any germanic language as a dutchman. I can understand scandinavian languages / german/english with great ease.

Keep in mind that the maker of this video doesn't know how to pronounce the "r" as he puts it back in his throat instead of in the front part of his mouth. The only people that have the correct pronounciation for Dutch live in the north/western parts.

the ij is a combination of letters making a sound, together with the ui, eu, ei, au, oi, ai and a few more they are just a sound, they are not considered letters. The y is not used as ij, only in words from other languages we use in dutch like yoghurt.

well no, in dutch we have a single and double e, the single is usually eh where your mouth kinda goes to the left like in berg (mountain) and the ee like the eeeeeenentwintig (twentyone). The ei and ij are the same, although we use them in different words, ijsje (icecream) and eindeloos (infinite). There is a weird exception with the één; if you say een paard if you mean a horse, you say uhn, but you say één horse if you mean one horse, only one horse. (running out of letters :D)

Yes that is true :D but we say i because it is easier to say wir in stead of weer, they sound almost the same anyway. trying to say weer as weyr is really hard, you get something like weeeiiiiiir (not ei but e...i)

English language comes from the germans languages like Neder and German, but it has many influency of French then if you're German, Italian, Portuguese ... etc, it's easy to learn English because it has a bit of all... but we can say that English is a German Language. I speak Portuguese.
