dchris, you don't have any hard data to make that conclusion. Personally, I think Steve's departure and the changing musical landscape contributed the most to Kansas' decline in popularity. Kansas' lyrics have always been spiritual in nature, and VC wasn't any different. I was a Christian for over 8 years when VC came out, and even I wasn't sure Kerry was talking about Christ - I had to read his autobiography to be sure. :^)
any kansas fan that "heard" their music surely knows we should cherish all of the musicians that are fortunate enough to have their time in these bands. They are all the best at what they do..
People are gonna have their preference as to who is better John Elefante or Steve Walsh,Personallty I like Steve Walsh but John was an excellant artist or he never would have been with KANSAS!!Usually a singer that plays guitar will at some point play one just to showcase his talent to say he is more than just a singer.Granted he didnt have the stage presence of a Steve Walsh on keyboard, but he was good enough to play with one of the most technical Rock bands ever, that speaks for itself !!
@SirPurr57 Its the same priciple with David Ragsdale. He's not only an amazing violinist, but a good rhythm guitarist too! Sure, people are naturally gonna miss Robby Steinhardt in the band, he was a good frontman, violinist and singer, but Ragsdale is 10 times more skilled than Robby.
kerry livgren? he helped make, then destroyed kansas in less than a decade. this (original) band had at least 5 more very good to great albums in them during the 80's and early 90's. kerrys christian beliefs should have been kept to his private life. and not used to take an entire band down the toilet.
Kerry's writing was always about where his head was, whether pre or post conversion; he didn't ruin the band any more than Walsh who walked away from it first. Proselytizing? Come on. Listen to this song or any from VC or DM. He didn't proselytize. At least the band realized how much they needed his writing and did Somewhere to Elsewhere, though Walsh had already wrecked his voice long before then.
Good for you. I actually front a band and play guitar too, I do write, and am not interested in "bringing souls to the Lord", so I'm not actually over my head, but thanks. John has a great voice but his stage presence on this is terrible and I was just pointing out how funny it is sometimes when singers who are obviously NOT guitarists pick it up for a song (see also: Vince Neil) Sorry to point out the obvious and dare to criticize the great John Elefante...hahah....Steve Walsh he aint.
Ever heard of showbiz? I'll tell you what, Chris, first of all, start singing like John. Next, start writing like John. After that, you can start bringing souls to the Lord. When you start to understand how far over your head you are, then you will be on your way.
I am a drummer who has had to front a band before. I do not have stage fright, Ever. But one of the hardest things I ever had to do was put on a guitar and pretend I was playing with professionals on my right and left.

2 things i didn't know was that Kansas was the largest grossing live act in 1981 and that Sammy Hagar auditioned for Kansas but John won the gig.

As someone who believes in a higher power, I totally agree. I want to hear good music, not proselytizing.

I love when singers pick up a guitar when's it's totally NOT needed.....I think Rich and Kerry have the guitar parts handled John. Just comedy.....
