@DanDaMan4A69 Because it wasn't the Pinto drivers' faults that their gas tanks would explode, covering the car's interior in burning fuel. It was a faulty, unsafe design that caused so many deaths. Additionally, the gas tanks only exploded, and not in the typical movie-type sense, when the car was hit from behind with some force, which meant someone else's bad driving caused the problem.

To make it even worse they came with Firestone 500 tires which would develop huge goose eggs on the sidewalls before they blew...only car that ran worse after a dealer tuneup because early pollution requirements were difficult to meet before computers and cats..

@bellcord Bullshit, If the car ran worse after a "dealer tune up" it wasnt tuned right to begin with. The only tuning to be done would have been changing the plugs and wires. I was able to tune my '78 2.3 in around twenty minutes. Our shop sold Firestone tires for years and had no such problems. Early pollution requirements were never a problem providing the car was in proper tune. Look for a "huge goose egg ready to blow" between your legs.

@dicarlo57 Don't hand me that horseshit junior ...I WAS THERE...The Firestone 500 tires were a HUGE scandal because they developed bulges on the sidewalls..just like mine did...read it in the paper ..went out to check and sure as hell a big goose egg in 2 of the 4...and I mean as big as your fist....Also , Pinto's still had a carbuerator which tuned by the dealer to pollution specs made it run worse ...it was in spec for minimum hydrocarbons but idled and ran so lean it drove awful..

They later found that there were protuding bolts that were in the rear close to the gas tank. If you had a rear end collision these bolts would go into and puncture the tank.

We had three people that were killed here in Austin Texas due to this bad design.

pintos were bad, but '73-'89 chevy trucks were worse, killing over 1800 people. Chevy refused to aknowledge the problem for nearly 20 years. The problem was that the gas tanks-some had two-were on the sides of the vehicle, outside the frame.

@91dodgespiritrt The issue was the filler pipe separated from the fuel tank upon a hard collision, instead of from the body of the car resulting, the fuel draining out and igniting.

You have to recall the time, the gas crisis was ongoing in 1973 and many were puting locking gas caps on their cars which aggravated the situation.

Never figured out how the hard plastic shield between the rear axle and tank helped anything.

Btw, a mallory unilite, MSD and heavy duty front springs were the ticket.

@happyfeet19942008 Nonsense. It was Lee Iacoccas' idea to market the early pintos weighing 1900 lbs. In the case of an extreme rear end collision the gas tank would ram into the rear axle, rupture and in many cases ignite. The revised design -I believe 1973 and later- weighed 2700 lbs. The additional weight being in reinforced rear frame sections and inner quarter panels, and a simple plastic sheild covering the diffrential cover. I owned a 78 pinto with a 2.3 which was a fine car

In a severe rear end collision (such as a notable example where the car was stopped and hit at 50mph), the gas tank could get punctured and then the leaking gas could cause the car to burst into flames. It wasn't any more dangerous than any other small car at the time. There was also a plate put on new cars staring in the mid 70s and also on existing ones in a recall that would prevent the gas tank from getting punctured.

My father had a 1973 explosive pinto and he got rear ended at a stop light by a big Plymouth Fury. He only got a small dent in the chrome trim around the tail light but the (rusty) Plymouth's front end was destroyed. My father says he was shocked he didn't blow up when he got hit then was even more shocked and amused by the level of damage to both cars.

They sold ford SUV with cruise control problems for years in America and had problems. Then knowing the problem, they still sold these things in the UK. Also ford SUVs and trucks catch on fire, type in "ford cruise control fire"
