  • Bottom line is, if you're a freethinker, you're still looking for someone else to do your thinking for you.

  • @5starGeneral79 No sorry I do my own thinking. I just realy like what Sam Harris has to say. Do you think a Freethinker should listen to other people or say someone his good ideas?

  • Looking at the title of this video, I'm just wondering when Sam Harris is going to "Freethinker the way forward."

  • Terrence Mckenna is the most innovative freethinker the 21st century has and will ever know

  • Turn that damn light off.

  • This is one area where I disagree with Harris. As an atheist, all religions are untrue, and there are no Gods. Making common cause with the Christians to gang up on Muslims would fall right into the hands of the Christian extremists (and yes, they are out there too--just search for "Jesus Camp"). All it would take would for our country to truly become a "Christian Nation" just as Saudi Arabia is a "Muslim Nation". I guess we've forgotten about the Inquisition.

  • Where can i see this entire speech by Sam Harris?

  • @Swiley117 I have posted 3 parts of this speech om my channel

    also try Google videos

  • Our brains, which art in our heads, treasured be thy names. Thy reasoning come. The best you can do be done on earth as it is. Give us this day new insight to resolve conflicts and ease pain. And lead us not into supernatural explanations, deliver us from denial of logic. For thine is the kingdom of reason, and even though thy powers are limited, and you’re not always glorious, you are the best evolutionary adaptation we have for helping this earth now and forever and ever. So be it.

  • Yet another clever speaker.

Free Thinkers are simply a "herd" of independent thinkers.

Free Thinkers Motto: "We are all different, just like everyone else!!!" 2+2=whatever we "think" it is.

". . . like a ship without a rudder", you guys think you should get credit just for floating around in a vessel without direction."

  • @revealer007 You state a Strawman argument. Freethinking mottos are: To thy self be true. Wisdom and reason be/are with you. A freethinker should not say we but I think this.

What I and others should get credit for is making the world a better place and the goodness of ideas.

Sam Harris is setting out the evidence and reason for understanding morals though rational concern for living Animal and Humans on the bases of pain and joy. I also point out the madness of faith and doctrine belief

  • @maccannaj hi,im ex muslim..do u believe that there is a life force...i like to go atheist but heres the problem they dont believe in life force

  • @UnitedBohol Hi to be a Freethinker you need to put what is real at the highest level. Atheism is just the non belief in gods or God. You can be an Atheist and believe in a lifeforce.

Freethought means if this important to you should question your beliefs. Why do I believe this. Is these reason true or false.

The study of logic is one means to answer your question The 1st step is to define "the life force"

what is the lifeforce. It may not mean the same thing to me.

I am running out of space

  • @revealer007 More projection from a fairy tale believer. You rudder is imaginary. You feel certainty about things which you have no capability of ever being certain about. Your fairy tales are just silly.

Freethinkers are brave enough to deal with reality. You on the other hand just hope and wish that your fairy tales are true.

  • @MaryannS1977 when it comes morals religion is out of job.

  • @MaryannS1977 Your job San Francisco Apologetics Examiner. Your job is an apolgetic of the Bible Da!

Amazing not believing in God is a logical fallacy. You are having a laugh!

Belief in God corrupts mans morals. I have yet to meet the person who is less moral then their God.

  • @MaryannS1977 I think you are promoting the fallacy of reification.

Sam Harris makes his case well. Now you want him to include a flaw in his argument. You wish for him to include issue which there is no reason or evidence for.

It is clear we need morals and we have morals in our hearts already.

Even the writers of the Bible knew this. Please ask me where I will tell you. Harris wants a logical reasoning to take place which will improve the world. You want to keep a job.

  • All religions are the same in the sense that they are all fiction.

  • He is funny without trying to be funny. He exposed the humor and stupidity of irrational religious beliefs.

  • Ofcourse most muslims are good, nice, peaceful people. I think the main point is that religion can make good people go bad things. and like the bible, who says not to kill and such, there are exeptions in both religions which lead to violance.

  • I live with a neigbor who is a muslim. He said that it's said in Islam that you can't kill others and can't commit suicide. Islam, actually means peace. Some muslims don't like 911. The idea that islam is evil is not quite true. Some muslims are peaceful, but some muslims are perverted. I work with muslims, i live with muslims, and they don't seem to be angry. I even was in mosque ones.

  • they lie

  • @TheRulezzzzzz There are definitely moderate Muslims but Islam is not moderate. There are peaceful Muslims but Islam is not peaceful. You can have moderate and peaceful Muslims but they are this way IN SPITE of their religion not because of it. Many Muslims are not raised to know the warfare that is preached in the Qu'ran. Unfortunately not all of them are.

  • I think it's as true as useless.

If you reject the idea of god, you ll be called atheist anyway.

In a debate, while rejecting the label, you will look just like an atheist ashamed to be :)

By logic he is right, but practically useless.

  • How can a modernist talk about intellectual honesty in a postmodern age?

  • I really REALLY like the point he makes about atheism. It's a waste of time and effort to deny the existence and belief in a deity. To move forward we must understand that deities don't exist.

  • Either morals are autonomous or they do not exist at all. If a person refrains from murdering his neighbor only out of fear of Divine Retribution his behavior is dictated not by moral values, but by caution, fear of the Holy Policemen, egoism. And if a person does good only with an eye to salvation, she is not doing good since her behavior is dictated by self-interest rather than by duty or by love and will thus not be saved.

  • Very Well Said.

  • I like what Sam Harris has to say. He's a smart guy and a good representative of atheism. But the guy needs to grow some balls on the actual word "atheism." He shouldn't shy away from it.

  • I have to disagree..........I am an atheist and I agree with Sam because to people who aren't atheists the simple word atheists has a very negative sound to it. People think the word atheism is negative so it doesnt help point out our aruguments.

I think another word would be more effective for atheists

  • @scoopers103, while Sam Harris has a point about the word, a different word wouldn't really help.

I've learned comparatively recently, largely on YTube, just how ludicrous is the view of a large chunk of Americans, considering "atheist" to be like "devil", "gay" or "satanic mind twisting pedophile"

Atheists are such dumb fucks; atheists all worship Dawkins; Look how brain crippled dumb Atheists are... pathetic! (etc., etc.)

Now think of a new word and substitute it - potayto / potahto

  • rationalist

  • Man that was AWESOME!!! from 9:10 onward. My nose was tingling with awe and admiration for the brilliant man Sam is. freakn awesome

  • I really like what he's saying about lessening the need to take a stand as an atheist. a lot of atheist take an intellectually superior attitude when arguing against religion, as if to say they're smarter because they choose against irrationality, when in reality, 90% of time, the only reason we are not religious ourselves is because we were lucky enough not to have it forced on us as children. Very few people 'rationally' step away for the idea of god once its in um. That takes real courage.

  • I think not believing in fricken talking snakes and magic makes me intellectually superior in at least 1 area.

  • Harris is smart as hell. Having heard his arguments, how could anyone on earth still believe in magic and fairy tales? Hard to imagine.

  • Harris is such a fraud. What does he mean by "free thinkers"

  • If Sam and all atheists are right, then when we die, thats it, end of story.

If Christians are right, when they die, they have everlasting life.

If I were a "reasonable" person....

  • Just because something is comforting it doesn't mean it's true.

  • I wish it were true. I can't imagine a nastier punishment for faith than the afterlife they promise.

  • Yeah, and what if both atheists and christans are wrong?

  • What is everyone is wrong?

  • Pascals wager is gay. Been debunked for years.

  • There's an infinite number of possibilities for deities and afterlifes. Choosing one of them still doesn't give you the greatest odds.

    Pascal's wager fails because

    1. There's an infinite number of possible outcomes, not just two.

    +

    2. Just because someone is an atheist, that doesn't mean that they cannot go to heaven(like with a reasonable god)

    +

    3. People shouldn't be good and shouldn't just believe something out of fear.

  • I want to add something to your deconstruction of Pascal's Wager:

    4. You can't force yourself to "believe" something. Either you do or you don't. I'm an atheist and it would be impossible to force myself to believe in god just to get some reward.

  • @VesusSheist, "You can't force yourself to believe something..." Exactly.

It's becoming a habit with me, pointing this out whenever a theist talks about what I choose to believe.

Unlike what the White Queen told Alice, in Through The Looking Glass, we cannot believe six impossible things before breakfast every morning.

Short of torture or some pretty severe brainwashing, I believe what I believe. And that will change tomorrow when I learn something new :)

  • Just think - if everyone in the world (or even half of the world) thought like Sam Harris wars and hateful behavior would probably cease to exist. What would be wrong with that?

  • Thanks for sending me this link, I thought was very interesting. The problem is that too many people just love being ignorant and hateful.

  • Seriously, this guy is really smart. And not just that, but calm and collected as well. Not to hate on styles like Bill Maher (who I love), but this way seems more effective. If only there were more like him.

  • No kidding. In addition to having rock solid arguments and being quite possibly the calmest person on the planet, he's probably the most articulate of the major atheist polemics.

Arguing with this guy has to be a fucking nightmare. I'm glad I agree with everything I've ever heard him say.

Sometimes I find myself thinking it's a shame hell doesn't exist. It'd be hilarious if ill-behaved Christians and Muslims were condemned to an eternity of debating Sam Harris on the issue of religion.

  • You have to have a lot of audacity to deny the snazzy of this guy!

  • lol Intellectual honesty, by a bunch of highly evolved rational apes.

  • But Sam you (collective you) do not merely represent the desire to know what is going on in the world when you (collective you) argue that I am an idiot because I believe in (Christian) God. I am very tired of ridicule by many idiots who think that they are enlightened. Some kids in this class know less than I have forgotten. They are the most arrogant

  • "Some kids in this class know less than I have forgotten"

    what about arrogance?

  • I give Sam Harris all the freedoms I enjoy myself. But I think he is an asshole nonetheless

  • Pretty hard to argue with Harris in this clip! :) Thanks for posting this!

  • Sam Harris expresses everything that I hold to be true in a much better way than I ever could. He's not only very intelligent, but capable of communicating the truth very eloquently. If only people could understand the subtleties of his message...

  • I would absolutely LOVE it if someone like Sam Harris would run for president!!!

  • PS: Is it really necessary to censor comments here? This could send a strange message to religious people who might want to comment here, as if we weren't open for a different viewpoint or not up to a debate.

  • I am sorry say it is. the problems come from jihadist cut and pasting 10 and 20 comment at a time

  • I mean, if a president bases his decisions on what he believes his god told him, then it doesn't matter what brand of religion he subscribes to. And if a presidential candidate publically states that he doesn't believe in evolution, it doesn't really matter if that candidate is a Christian or a Mormon. There's no point in pointing out that Mormons are a tiny bit less rational than Christians, imho. It's highly questionable if a person who is out of touch with reality should run a country.

  • Harris has a point there. However, this is the first occasion that I find myself not entirely agreeing with him. I too can see that there are huge differences between religions. But that doesn't change that there is a clear line between rational and irrational thinking. "A bit more irrational" sounds a lot like "a bit more pregnant". People are either able to think rational or they aren't, and if they aren't it's questionable if they should, for example, hold a political office.

  • these are great points.. as a Christian we do get pissed when alot of people try to equate "abortion doctors" and american fundamentalists with taliban.. it's just unfair...

  • i can happily talk to christians and have fun talking to them, but muslims, no idea of free speech and will end up insulting or threating, as if it just you are going to hell. To jeffbrown, it is nice to know yet another opened christian has watched this video.

  • Harris really knows how to make his point. Majoring in philosophy teaches you how to do that very well.

  • Atheism is nothing new ... they used to be called pagans ... neopagans would be a great name for non-believers in the invisible man.

  • Buddhists are also atheists, or they, by definition, should be, because Buddha, as an enlightened human being didn't believe in a creator-god that punished. The actions that one takes, pay back CAUSALLY.

  • This dude is really fun to watch. The God Delusion is a good book, but i can't wait to finish it, I want to read his even more

  • Hes right, atheism can become an ideology. Reason is the king.

  • Incredible.

I have watched EVERY video I can find of Sam's. AMazing.

  • i dont think ive watched every video...but all that ive seen are amazing. as are his books, which i definitely recommend to anyone who hasnt read them yet

  • evidence and reason are no nightmare to openmind people. a atheist mightmere is religion killing.

about nostradamus: i have lived though 3 pediction of the end of the world. we are still here.

  • Is there more to this talk? I'm interested in hearing the rest of what he has to say.

  • So well spoken. It's so nice to hear one of the very few champions of reason and logic to counter balance the normaly pious voices we get bombarded with. Once we get to the point where we don't have to be atheists, just like there isn't a word for "non-astrologers", we know we are getting somewhere. Too bad I will not be alive to see it!
