never heared this version before...it IS the best...;that 's the thing about springfield & CSNY...they're always throwing in a twist to surprise the fans...should of seen how they stepped up Carry on in Milwaukee Summerfest in 06....the most talented band.
The original version is where it's at, this got terrible w/ garage style jamming that breaks-up the vibe and guess they thought it was hip to mix it up. Someone is playing a little like Rodger McGuinn here. I'm thankful Charlie & Brian used the other version on Buffalo Springfield Again which is totally classic!
In '67 I met Brian Green & Charlie Stone producers of these guys in LA. They were nice people and I met Gene Clark at their studio, a great guy. We had no pretension about fame & fortune...we all just hung out to get a sound.
Thanks for the upload, I saw them in San Francisco in 68, there were so many groups I got to twist one up with and rap. I think 67 to 69 were the best years of my life, with all that music and the street action plus getting to go in the stage door and be with the bands. I got to do this because I knew a roadie and Barbra who was a seamstress for the bands. she had two girls that worked with her and there was always some action at her place. I'm just a nobody they called warlock having fun.
Thanks for the upload. I've never heard this version before. The funny thing is that it just fades out at the end. Probably went on for another five or ten minutes!
I have a bootleg album with the original 9:28 second version, which has all of Neil's guitar parts that were erased by Stephen for the "Retrospective" version. I will try and up load it...It is the version played by KPPC and KRLA in Los Angeles in late 1967 just prior to Buffalo Springfield Again being release...
@techreptdh I have no idea but if you listen very carefully with headphones between 1:58-2:06, it sounds like they're smoking something in the studio; you can even hear someone cough. Perhaps that may explain Stills' gibberish.
very informative about the origins.though short lived and tumultuous,Bufffalo Springfield were surely better as a unit than the individual members.Mr Soul is my fav or maybe Expecting to Fly.thanks ffor this rarity.
Thank you, franzia1499 !! This is even longer than the track that appeared on the "Heavy Metal" double-LP compilation in the '70s. Great to hear this jam again.
@poppaculture Dude, I bought that LP for two songs-Freedom by Hendrix and Ironman. But when I heard this song, which by the way is the only version I had heard, I wore it out!
Anyone remember Buffalo Springfield singing the song titled, "Uno Mundo" (One World) from around 1967? I loved that song but have been unable to locate it on YouTube.
@capitolemiproducer The whole thing is definitely in stereo. Listen to it with headphones on and you'll know what I'm talking about, although it does sound much more centered on the second part. I guess that's just how they mixed it.
One of three vinyl tunes left off the Springfield box. Still said this was never intended for release so this double is the only way you can still get it.
IN THE 60'S , THE LOng version of "Bluebird" was only on a reel to reel , it wasnt on LP , only way to get it was to listen to it on underground FM radio
Just release it..it's been so long since it was recorded Stills and Young not liking the track is no longer relevant...Mick Jagger never liked "Rock & Roll Circus" but eventually released it..personally I like the longer version..at one point Stills screams out "Dewey Martin ,Dewey Martin !! " left off this version
No wonder Steve and Neil hated. Maybe if you heard it while stoned in the 60's, it would resonate differently. As it is, it's just a bad idea that made it to recording. Thank God they went with the short version. Now THAT'S a classic.
I have the long version of this on the Retrospective album I picked up at a yard sale in the late 70's. The reviews I"ve read of this album state that the banjo version is on the lp.... well, not on mine. And I like the long version better....
Hmm, rats. It's an excellent recording, I didn't know the masters were so warm and full. (I listened to "Retrospective" on a crappy hi-fi years ago, so I guess my expectations are too low ....) But it's marred by Stills' wailing, and although the guitars sound great, it wanders a bit. Maybe (wishful thinking, I know) it could be remixed to just leave out the vocal track in the coda.
Always a fan, never a fanatic. First time I have heard this version and dang, I love it! Having been to a LOT of concerts where most, including the band(s) where 'Spiritually Enhanced' the jams that were played during those days have not been heard since. Heard a 30 minute jam of 'Mother Earth', Eric Burdon and War, in Fairbanks 1971 and it rocked! Listen to Quicksilver, Happy Trails. Thanks for posting this. Oh, HAPPY TRAILS!!
I first heard this version back in 1990 on WGRF 97 Rock in Buffalo on a Saturday Morning Radio Show. Also in 2008 on a radio show called Stone Hinge on WREK a Georgia Tech College Station
Legend! I tried to post this myself because I didn't think it was up here but the charming legal people aren't a fan of freedom. I don't care about the politics behind the writing of the song... the sound makes up for it. Amazing.
I also heard a rumor that it was, in fact, B. Mitchell Reed who somehow "acquired" this long version from the home of one of the members of BS. I may be wrong but we all know how rumors go.
@Toppercat ; BMR was a fan, a friend and an ardent supporter of BS. They would give him unreleased tunes to play on KMET-FM. A good example of this is the demos Stills and Cros made before Nash joined the band. BMR dubbed the new group The Frozen Noses. He also house-sat their pad in Malibu when they were on tour.
Back in 1967, just before the second album was released, KFWB DJ B. Mitchell Reed played this. When the album came out, we were real disappointed this version wasn't anywhere to be found!! I was thinking the box set would include it, but no such luck. Thanks for posting it!!
THANK YOU! I've been looking for a copy of this for YEARS! (Ever since my Vynyl Copy of the Double LP bit the dust). I Seldom find myself disagreeing with Neil Young on ANYTHING (See my Screen Name), but I think this version is the definitive one (IMHO).

@hydraIX This was a studio recording, the first half of which was used on Buffalo Springfield Again; the studio jam at the end was left off in place of the signature banjo ending of the album version of the song.
There were quite a few complaints that this version wasn't included on the Buffalo Springfield box set in 2001. At first I thought it would be a good idea to include it but when I read about the circumstances regarding this "long" version and how it came into the public eye, I thought Neil and Steve were right to bury it. They didn't like it and the master tape was stolen and given to Atco for release.
@MattHatter I definitely agree that Young and Stills both despise this version. I bought the box set when I was about 14 and was very disappointed that this song was omitted. Many songs on there were duplicates, and some of the demos released on the box set actually were not very good. Allegedly the master tape of this exists, in good condition, and actually is slightly longer (by about 2 minutes I think) than this version that appeared on the 1973 anthology.
@MattHatter Personally I like the short version better, but I think it still should have been included for its cultural significance. I remember when I was really young the long version came on a classic rock radio station late at night. Nowadays, it's even rare you hear the short album version on the air. This band had so many good songs, and it's a shame that at best you only hear "For What It's Worth" (a good song nonetheless) on the radio today.
Definitely interesting to hear, but I think it was the right choice in the end to go with the 4-minute version with the banjo/acoustic guitar ending. The jam is similar to the way they performed the song live with the blues shuffle section. Stills' vocal interjections are kind of annoying, although he does throw in a few lines from Leave.
What a great jam! That's the only album where you can find the 9 minute "Bluebird." My copy's got more crackles and pops than yours. Thanks for uploading it! Great Stephen Stills lyrics too:
