but his back, triceps, legs, abs, and shoulders were not very good, and bodybuilding isn't about building up the "show muscles", its supposed to be about the entire body, so Arnold really shouldn't have won
@1987PANAGIOTIS I realize that. I've watched all the existing footage multiple times and it's just the way I see it. I realize Arnold was amazing, but that night he was far from the best man there. I am friends with Mr. Samir Banout, who was there that night & we see things a LITTLE differently, he agrees that Arnold was the WRONG man to win that night. He thinks it should have been either Mike, Boyer or Roy. The late Mentzer thought the winner should have been either himself or Chris Dickerson.
@BrickhouseB2 I think also that Arnold should'nt have won that show, because he wasnt in his best shape. It would have been no problem for him, if he ended up 4th place or higher. Because he already won all the trophys. Sergio Oliva got two 8th places, but to this day he is still the myth.
This was the first of 3 Olympias in a row in which the winner should not have placed any higher than 4th place. The judges finally got it right again in 1983.

Arnold neglected to perform some of the mandatory imposed by Oscar State, in fear that he would look weaker than his opposition. He almost had points taken away and should of been disquailfied. He was mearly hiding his weak points, which were many. Muscle and fitness (and the others) said the Arnold's posing routine was outdated and " An old hat". Mike had more signature poses than anyone that night. Smooth posing, from one transition to the next. CBS percieved Mike as the winner.
When Arnold hit those three quarter back shots it was all over. When a man dominates the front double bicep, rear double bicep, most muscular and side chest poses he usually wins! Add the most amazing calves and some unmatched signature poses and bingo!

well 81 did suck, for someone like franco who for some reason was trying to prove something. after zanes comments from his radio interview about 80, just about makes it certain arnold won in another form as well. little mikes rear double is un impressive, grant it, arnold looked way better in the evening, made his shot even better. forearms and hamstrings, which i agree mike had better, does not outdo better looking major bodyparts that arnold had.tri's and bi's cancel each other out.

As far as the rear double biceps, Once again check out the Olympia issue where Mike's delts swallow Arnold's. Mike's back had more thickness, and lower back that were among the best of all time. Arnold had no hamstrings nor forearms (never had them in his career). Mike's chest agreed, were pityful that day. Arnold won in the eyes of Joe Weider and IFBB, but not in the audience and bb judging criteria.

I am friends with Mr. Samir Banout, who was there that night & we see things a LITTLE differently, he agrees that Arnold was the WRONG man to win that night. He thinks it should have been either Mike, Boyer or Roy. The late Mentzer thought the winner should have been either himself or Chris Dickerson.

Almost to a man Arnold's critics of 1980 have retracted their statements and now agree he won the show. Having taken a second look at the footage in a calm relaxed atmosphere they invariably agree they got in wrong in slamming Arnold. Arnold neglected to perform some of the mandatory imposed by Oscar State, in fear that he would look weaker than his opposition. He almost had points taken away and should of been disquailfied. He was mearly hiding his weak points, which were many. Muscle and fitness (and the others) said the Arnold's posing routine was outdated and " An old hat". Mike had more signature poses than anyone that night. Smooth posing, from one transition to the next. CBS percieved Mike as the winner.

@revskull Your right, Arnold use what was needed to win: Friends in high places. Did you know Arnold hung out with some of Judges the night before the event? The best arms? Nor hardly. He was missing triceps and forearms. As far as thigh development. Aside from Mike and Tom, Sergio's thigh were inspriring. The same can be said of Danny Padilla.

well 81 did suck, for someone like franco who for some reason was trying to prove something. after zanes comments from his radio interview about 80, just about makes it certain arnold won in another form as well. little mikes rear double is un impressive, grant it, arnold looked way better in the evening, made his shot even better. forearms and hamstrings, which i agree mike had better, does not outdo better looking major bodyparts that arnold had.tri's and bi's cancel each other out.

As far as the rear double biceps, Once again check out the Olympia issue where Mike's delts swallow Arnold's. Mike's back had more thickness, and lower back that were among the best of all time. Arnold had no hamstrings nor forearms (never had them in his career). Mike's chest agreed, were pityful that day. Arnold won in the eyes of Joe Weider and IFBB, but not in the audience and bb judging criteria.

Arnold had skinny legs and proportions were terrible! This is the Olympia, which supposbely judged by: Size, shape, symmentry, and proportions. Arnold did not meet that criteria--not by a long shot!

Mike decimated Arnold in almost everything--including posing. Arnold's posing was described as "In old hat" as indicated in Muscle and Fitness in the Olympia 80 issue. @OLDTIME47 I really doubt the bb's back in the day didn't care about training their legs as you say. Arnold legs were always quite thin compared to his upper body. His genetic disposition didn't allow him to have big thighs, period! If you observe the 80 Olympia video (The lost Footage) you can clearly see Arnold's thighs were slender and smaller than Mike's and he weighed the same.

Arnold was the bodybuilder of the 80ies. Why? Because he had a beautiful body to work with. It was a talent and a gift, and he used them to their fullest potential. The bodybuilders these days, man, they look so pumped, I'm not sure which part of their body to look at. It's a mess and I don't understand why people love it so much.
The bodybuilders from Arnold's time were more beautiful imo.
