  • I tried a CFL and they suck! They are not nearly as bright as Incandescant light bulbs! Not matter what of all the eco bullshit propaganda, I am still going to use incandacent light bulbs! And I stocked up to make sure I still can use them!

  • this is bullshit, i keep changing the CFL's in my home because the electronic uside always fuck up and burn. i had no problem with the old filament bulb.

    FUCK CFL's!

  • @hitachi088 At my house we have some lamps with old bulbs...i have a collection of old incandescent bulbs blue, red, yellow, green, white, and the normal glass color

  • @hitachi088 At my house we have some lamps with old bulbs i have a collection of old incandescent bulbs blue, red, yellow, green, white, and the normal glass color

  • I almost DIED after the cfl BROKE!!! I had to go to the HOSPITAL!!!

  • Any time I can save a little bit of money at risk of my health its great . Thanks big brother .

  • Win cfl

  • We should start a rally, and bring the life-saving incandescent lights to Great Britain after they're supposedly banned.

  • stop teasing light bulbs there just our technology some places in the world still have no electricity thumbs if agree!!!♥♥♥

  • @ruwaida101 looks to me like u have no support here. for years, me and many ppl have used "inefficient" lighting, dishwashers and washing machines. And they've done a great job. So who gives a rat's ass if they're efficient or not. Just because cfls are new technolodgy doesnt make it good. cfls dont even last as long as you're told. its scary that we got ppl like u who agree that government can impose on ppl's lives telling them what to use. F*ck going green. I'l use whatever bulbs i want

  • @noreaga12326 no one gives a fuck what u use but if you want to live in a trash can by ten years id use clrs .

  • @ruwaida101 obviously YOU give a fuck otherwise u wouldnt be responding. maybe i outa dump a few gallons of mercury in your property and we'l still see if u like cfls

  • thumbs up compact florescent the only reason some people tease compact florescent is because they still haven't catch up with technology thumbs up if you agree!!!♥♥♥

  • @ruwaida101 shut up you stinky hippie!

  • @hitachi088 who u calling hippie at least i have a life and if u like it our not im helping so before u tease any one get a life at the market.

  • It comes down to your electric bill every month u wanna pay $100 or $30 ?

  • Something that hasn't been mentioned much is that the EMF (Electronic Magnetic fields) comparison is quite scary. CFL's produce 'dirty electricity' which affects brainwaves. Normal EMF reading for a room is about 32, CFL readings are as high at 857.

  • I noticed green leak from CFL without bomb or break that mercury! I decided to remove all CFL and throw them away and go back old fashion low watt bulbs. Whew. I don't want Mercury vapor around my house.

To be safe than get sick all the time because of CFL vapor

  • Since replacing all my bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, I haven't had to change one out in well over a year. In fact, not a single one of the CFBs have had to be replaced yet. I can't prove or disprove out much energy they might save or not save, but I've saved a lot of money since I made the switch.

As for it being toxic if you break it, don't break it. Then again, my very first broke and that was 3 years ago and I'm still alive. Go figure.

  • I prefer incandescent lights because of the colors they bring out, They are not stale like CFL's. Still, I replaced all my out side, porch and garage lights with CFL's and full size Fl-Light Bulbs because they look Cool and are more efficient.

  • UNLAWLEE.... LEDs are not the future lighting. its ENERGY EFFICIENT BULBS. Thats what a lot of ppl seem to not get. energy efficient incandecents are currently being made as we speak. But i agree with u on the CFLs. its very shitty and dont work well on almost ALL appliances, especially in refridgerators for the simple fact that CFLs and cold dont mix. Something that congress probably didnt think about. Anyway, I will continue to stock up on edision bulbs until the les energy ones come out.

  • A few more things:

-CFLs don't kill if broken. A clean up guide is on the EnergyStar website.

-CFLs are coming in more than one color. White is what is out now, but blue and yellow phosphors are being added and will be out soon.

-USA government will force all bulbs to be made CFL except for colored lights for partys.

-A known problem is the 1-2 second warm up time.

"Oh no! I have to wait 2 seconds longer if I want to have 8 year lasting bulbs that save me 50% on energy!"

    Grow up.

  • I use CFLs. All but two bulbs in my room are CFLs. The other two haven't burned out yet, and there is one sitting in my closet for no good reason...

  • the bulb light is hot and waste electric,,,

the tube light is warm and less waste electric

  • Well it may be "just as bright" but I would really like to know if that guy in the video has many of these CFL's emitting out their awful tone of light ('Pure Brilliant white') in his house as aposed to the much more pleasant and soft/yellow tone of light coming from that 60 Watt bulb, in any case phasing out 60 Watt/75 Watt bulbs isn't the way to go about saving sufficant amount of power, CFL's in Australia will only save 0.14% of the countrys total CO2 emissions

  • Also, do you know where the mercury in those bubls comes from? COAL waste! It's not about saving energy, it's about more money in the pockets of the coal industry. If we can make people dependant on these bubls, once alternative energy is more prominent it garuntees a foot in the door for the coal industry. Not that i'm oppossed to the coal industry, it does give many people jobs and an income.

  • Governments worldwide imposing change to fluorescent without policing false claims by manufacturers. Fluorescent lamps never truly equal the visible light output of incandescent bulbs at the wattage equality level claimed, so consumers spend more for less light while manufacturers reap huge profits from more expensive fluorescent lamps. Brighter fluorescent lamps use more electricity, so don't really save money (cost added to electric bill) or benefit the environment all that much.

  • FUCK CFLs and FUCK anyone who promotes the use of these shit bulbs. And if you break one of these things in my presence I will wipe the shit up with your face you fucking moron! And Fuck the greenies and the Govt for shoving more shit down our throats.

  • The greenies are too dumb to realise that it's the coal industry that is backing this movement and legislation :) I hate CFL bubls too. My incandescents in my room have lasted over a year so far.

  • naan bread / burger

  • flouresents suck balls they give out shit light and most of the ones ive encounterd need to warm up for about 1-2 seconds thats fucking shit

  • Its kind of strange. If people smell the taste of saving money, they become completely blind to all cons and eyeball at the pros.

    1. A CFL is a miniature neon tube

    2. CFLs are not harmless if disposed

    3. One part of industry has a strong interest to replace all light bulbs with CFLs, another industry has strong interest in keeping light bulbs

So don't believe everything they say. Stay sceptical.

  • Propaganda. It'll last that long and save that much money, maybe/if you're lucky, under ideal conditions. Greenies don't tell you they they're not made for ceiling fan units (vibration), not recommended for bathrooms (humidity), not meant to be turned off within 15 minutes of when you turn them on, etc., etc.

  • Comment removed

  • No, the facts make me right. Edison bulbs come in 'heavy vibration' models as well for industrial uses, and the cost is only a few pennies more per bulb. If by your own admission CFLs aren't perfect, why are we being forced to use them by law? They are not superior, and market forces won't drive a change to an inferior product. On the flip side, go back and look where the major "green lighting" company spent its political donations. That's money well spent to force us to use inferior products.

  • The new spiral or CFL light bulbs are not as good as original lightbulbs since they are not as bright as needed for people to see in their room. I will always stay with original light bulbs. Stay away from CFL. They are not good, and they contains chemical that can be hazardorous to our health. Stay with older light bulbs from now on.

  • Yeah sure it takes less energy and lasts longer but can that cover up for the fact that theres chemicals inside this fluorescent light bulb that are hazard to our health? I would just stick to the old fashioned one were when it breaks I don't have to go into panic mode, haha.

  • i have only cfls in my house. Most are over 5 yrs old. They were expensive at first, but I would have been thru 10 times as many incandescant. Plus lower light bills.

BTW, the rating of how many hours they last... thats only if they are left on straight. Apparently its a little harder on CFLs to turn on and back off. In fact, of the 3 that I have had to replace the last 5 years, all 3 were in places where I walk in and out of often (turning the light and off). The ones I leave on all day - old.

  • I HATE these lights. They give me headaches just like the florescent ones in my office. I have my own lamps with clear, old fashioned incandescent light bulbs. When I go to Lowes I buy a couple boxes of the old bulbs because the US government is going to force us to use these crappy, headache-causing CFLs. Not on my watch you bitch Nancy Pelosi. LEDs are another option, but the technology and price isnt quite there yet. Oh, and if you break one of those curly lights call the hazmat team.

  • Which one makes your skin fall off?

huh yeah thought so, I'll take the old school bulb. What kind of toxins are the CFLS filled with?

  • Mercury, in which about 75 mg is enough to kill you.

  • But there's about 3-5 in an average CFL anyway.

  • the legal max in the uk is 2mg of mercury per bulb... 15mg is enough to get you sick. 75mg is enough to kill a baby. and can only kill adult men if swallowed or large amounts are inhaled (so 75mg).

  • Am I missing something here? Why nobody mentions the "refresh rate" problem. Eyes quickly go bad from the low frequency of these bulbs.(you can use synchronized pairs, but very few people do)

Should I go blind, and have a mercury poisoning trying to save electricity? And I am paying for that electricity, it's mine. If I want to trow it away, it's my choice!!!

  • They are filthy, bad for the environment, so all those hypocrites whoe want to save engergy, environment, and the planet, will ruin things, for certain, with these new bulbs...

  • Fuck CFL's. We should be using LED.

  • Not a bad idea.....even though i really do like the spiral ones

  • how much energy has it taken to invent the light bulbs? how much does it take to manufacture one compared to an incandescent? how many are destroyed in the manufacturing process? what happens to the mercury when it gets recycled?

  • "how much energy has it taken to invent the light bulbs?"

You have been living under 'mercury bombs'(lol) in factories, schools, and every kind of store for most of your life. Fluorescents have been around for years(1901).

"how much does it take to manufacture one compared to an incandescent?"

Since CFLs use 1/4 the power and last 10x longer, the difference is offset.

"what happens to the mercury when it gets recycled?"

    Its reused.

You can stop asking these same ?'s at other vids now.

  • On point #1. Bad argument - just because it happens in the past does not make it ok now. Fluorescents have many issues.

On point #2. If the difference is offset, why are we forcing everyone to switch?

On point #3. I hate to sound like Tina Fey here but please tell me specifically how the mercury gets recycled.

on ur last point - different people read different posts so obviously you would want to address everywhere, certainly hope u are not just talking about it here!

  • "Bad argument - just because it happens in the past does not make it ok now."

Its not a matter of past, thats what has been used all along, present time included.

'#2': offset meaning CFLs cost LESS to manufacture comparatively to incand. Which is a GOOD reason to switch.

'#3': if you want to know, then look it up. Do your OWN homework and stop asking questions that have answers you dont want/like.

My last point was made because you have asked these same ?'s elsewhere, akin to spamming.

  • never touch a light bulb with your hands. The oil in your hands shorts the life dramatically.

Plus cfl are full of mercury and thus extreemly poisonous.

LED lights are better in everyway, No glass, more effecient that CFL's programable, no special dimmer required etc.

  • Yes, they do save money. I use them in Florida since I don't like to be roasted by their waste heat.

Having said that, there's no reason not to use an incandescent's waste heat in winter in Northern climate.

    The choice should be mine.

  • My experience with these new bulbs is that the quality of light SUCKS" and they dont last at my house. It seems that fluctuation's in power cause these new bulbs to fail. We wont get into the toxic issues here.

  • oh yeah agreed! also did you know they have been reported to catch fires? you can do google search on that to find articles about them catching fire and in some cases burnt down the whole house!!!

  • That guy in the video obviously didn't do his research on the CFL bulbs. Mercury poisoning. Hello!

  • Excuse me! But have we not been using the same type of lighting in office buildings, grocery stores, Schools, and malls for over 20 years. The long tube type uses the same chemicals as there smaller cousins yet nobody is bitching about them. Well that is except for the producers of the old bulbs who are now loosing big $.

  • CFL bulbs are just a con, to make money for offshored manufacturers in places like China.

  • Quoting..nsman88...CFL bulbs are just a con, to make money for offshored manufacturers in places like China.

So,....there are no benefits huh. Try a reduced light bill.

  • Mercury lighting has been around for many years, and all fluorescent tubes are mercury, however they are not often found in the home or for GLS . This issue is that we are forced/ blackmailed into buying these,to keep up the demand for energy(,they are not energy efficient).

CFL's can give a good light, but for only slightly less power, but when you consider the high energy used to make, the toxic substance used, the radiation they emit, the mess they make of the supply, they are not worth much.

  • 5. In northern latitudes evening lighting is only necessary in the cold months and incandescent wattage is only like using auxilliary electric heating. If you use electric anyway, CFL is just a waste of money. 6. All materials in incandescent bulbs can be easily recycled; unlike the plastic bases of CFL lights.

  • CFL Truths: 1.The stated equivalent wattages are falsely inflated: for example, 11W gives about 20% less light than 40W incandescent. 2. Some of them emit an unpleasant whining noise. 3. CFL light is too blue and uncomfortable to sit in for a long time or to read by. 4. CFL bulbs are very fragile and break easily at the slightest impact.

  • Fact 90% of an incandescent light bulbs output is in the infrared witch humans like you and me cannot see anyway, and is therefore a complete waste of power. That is y an incandescent bulb gets so hot yet a florescent one is much cooler to the touch. A larger amount of the elec. is turned into usable light instead of heat.

  • it all depends on what brand and how many watts it puts out. i have some CFL's and they are very cool cuz theydont emit yellow light, they emmit bright white light. they are not three ways tho and ive never experienced any problems with them. it might only be the three way bulbs that are causing trouble.

  • Has ANYONE here witnessed these new bulbs go BAD?? I have!! I was in the livingroom, John had replaced the 3-Way bulb with this cr@p of a bulb which gave LITTLE light though it stated it was 100 watt. . . ANYWAY, I heard this wissing sound, yes WISSING sound, then SMOKE began to billow up through the lamp shade and we both thought the LAMP had finally died. I unplugged it and took it outside. IT WAS THE BULB!! it can cause FIRES, HELLO??? I've stocked up on the regulars, 48 and counting.

  • Same here! I have read reports about fires of CFL. There are posts and news about the fires too! The older maganetic CFL was so much better due to more simple constrution even if it flashes on start up and heavy but they were so much better and lasted forever. Today ones made in China, are junk, does not really last promised hours, and causes fires!

  • Yes, please check video:

"IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ENERGY SAVER LIGHT BULBS!"

  • The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.

There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs release highly toxic mercury vapour when broken. The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) is only 25 micrograms per cubic meter (OSHA).

It will cost your local authority dearly to provide for their disposal.

They are not dimmable, they are slow to warm up, have a tendency to flicker, and have a poor color.

They will not save much electricity. If you normally need to heat your home, the so-called 'waste' heat from conventional bulbs helps heat your home.

  • I invite everyone to read this article on CFL and the incandescent ban. It's very englightening - no pun intended! ;)

You tube block URLs, so please copy the "URL" below and change the + signs to dots:

    sound+westhost+com/articles/incandescent+htm#std

  • how much are they paying you to shit out this propoganda? incandescent bulbs are superior in every way, and well worth the few extra dollars a year.

  • LEDs do rock! Here is an analogy.

    Kerosene Lamp = Vinyl Records

Incandescent = Eight Track Tape, Cassettes

    Compact florescent = CDs

    LED = Mp3s

Just because CFLs aren't as good as LED doesn't mean we should only use incandescents. In fact I think that not using CFLs now could mean a longer wait for LED technology to come about. It'll appear that there is no demand for efficient lighting.

  • wraybm1, your analogy stinks! Sound-wise, most mp3s are right down there with 8 tracks and cassettes.

CFLs are more efficient, but they are not a replacement for incandescent and halogen bulbs. For instance, show me an efficient bulb which looks and functions like an incandescent 60 watt candelabra bulb. My church uses 132 of these bulbs to light their auditorium - that's 7920 watts. We'd love to find a low wattage replacement, but none exists that we know of.

  • Theres an issue regarding the increase in the usage of these CFLs. They are known to incresase the "electrical pollution", due to their poor Power Factor which is about 0,5 or 0,6 at the best. This causes some issues on the current and voltage of the electrical system and this reduce the quality of the power. I'm not telling people not to use these lamps, but this Power Factor issue must be addressed buy the manufactures. Google it yourselves. ;)

  • Its not the Power Factor, but the RF radiation due to the many harmonics generated by the electronics, they are DIRTY LAMPS, cause health problems, costly to manufacture,(energy wise) difficult and dangerous to dispose/recycle

  • 100% correct....our shops no longer stock the traditional incandescant globes as a result I had a home full of CFL's well today at my local hardware I was having a whine about it and I was informed that there is now an option of halogen globes I bought 2 still the same shape of the old globes however with a little led globe inside and 1/4 of the price but I am still trying to track down info on the RF on these globes because if these are not good for health it's back to candles I think

  • Basically there should be no rf from led lamps, however it will depend on how these are driven. led lamps will not work from ac supply, so a rectifier or converter will be needed, and thats where the radiation wlil be.

With cfl, a fluorescent tube can emit rf even on DC supply, this made worse by the electronic ballast used with cfl.

CFL are costly to manufacture, use vast amount of energy and toxic materials, yet fail to give an efficient light( they get very hot)

  • They last about 10.000 hours if you use it on a 3h cycle. Manufactors come up with these numbers buy letting the lamp on for 3hs, then 15min off, 3hs on, 15min off and so on. If you turn these lamps on and off too frenquently, it will last much less. On a 5min cycle these lamps can last about 80% less.

  • no thanks, those bulbs have mercury in them and there are no good recycling for cfl's. I say go with LED bulbs It's the future of lighting.
