Why would I? I was playing simple baroque music by J.S. Bach at the time. I couldn't conceive of a seven year old enjoying Elliott Smith, nor being introduced to his music.

It's unusual that you would defend this performance, because it's evident even to the least knowledgeable musicians/listeners that this guy is changing chords a beat early, or out of tempo pretty much every time. Look at a guitar tab for this song, realize how simple it is, then think about how simple it is on the piano.
