for god sake the sl55 has a differential, don't say it hasn't, what it hasnot is the limited slip differntial. differntials are now a basic part in modern cars, so it is impossible for a car like an amg to lake it.

I don't think the M3 was ever meant to compete against the SL55. So yea they were not meant to be in the same league and yet the ugly merc was barely quicker. It is supercharged and makes 90hp/liter M cars have made over 100hp/liter naturally aspirated. Check international engine awards, lots of bmws winning and many are runners up, not many merc or audi engines. Low end torque and low revs is stupid in a sports car. F1 cars do 20k for a reason. You don't spend much time below 3000rpm in racing.

The low end is good for take offs and amateur drivers, that want a sport feel. like most of the merc drivers.

sl55 is sporty, but not racy. its too heavy. round a track it proly lose to the m3, heck it doesnt even have a differential! +2tons it doesnt corner. luxo sport + mega power.

the m3 is really more race sporty and some lux. but its not as hardcore as before. (m3's have gotten fatter over the years). perhaps the csl if it ever comes considering the poor sales

BMW just like high revving engines. Mercedes like lower revving engines with lots of torque. tbh it doesn't really matter which car is faster... these days (uk) where can u drive fast on the roads -.- u can't do like 200 on roads -.- so i think that it all counts the driving quality and the feel, also the driver also have different outcomes coz what if he is slow changing gear -.-

this is previous SL55, in 2007 there was improved engine with 517hp and faster gearbox and bigger brakes and suspension with sport setting!

SL and M3 are not even in the same league...M3 is for sons of the rich daddy, and their daddy drives SL55 AMG!!!

Oh yeah in performance terms and latest tech the right competition would be SL63 AMG (not S/C) with MCT 7G-tronic!!!

DO NOT FORGET ALSO that SL55 is 2tons and M3 is half a ton LIGHTER! and do not forget that SL55 was developed in 2003!!! do not forget that SL55 is hardtop and do not forget that the M3 is tuned..give an SL a ECU programe and open exhaust and you will be near 600hp!

oh and yes..SL55 has automatic transmission which is more of a prestige than racing thoroughbred!

cant argue the specs, but its still 414(stock) and maybe 450 with ecu and exhaust, vs 510hp... and at higher rpms, the weight doesnt make as much of a difference as from the dig... what i'd like to see is v3 335i put a beating on that sl tho=)

Yeah I have to agree with that (although I'm actually an 18 year old who hangs out with a bunch of tuner owners lol). I prefer cars of this level with minimum customization. I'm possibly getting an E36 M3 that I found for sale today and if I do manage to get it, it might get a high quality exhaust system and tires and wheels and that's it. Oh and btw tuning wasn't mentioned in the above posts lol.

OK M3 E36 is my favourite M3...specially EVO with 321hp...that was a bulletproof engine!
