People forget that Huntley-Brinkley was the leading evening newscast on network TV....only after Chet retired in 1970 did Walter Cronkite take over the ratings lead at CBS. Huntley was in a class all by himself. I'll never forgive Cronkite for finally opposing the Vietnam war so late.
@jackpark7927 You're wrong about when CBS overtook NBC for dominance on the evening news. David Brinkley states in his autobiography that in April of 1967, the AFTRA union, which all on air personnel belonged to, voted to strike. David Brinkley chose to honor the picket line, while Chet Huntley chose to cross it. The reaction from people knowing Brinkley was sitting it out and that Huntley had crossed striking picket lines, angered viewers of them both and began the end for them.
6:22 times have not changed, people can't seem to learn from history. :( Sad day, and here in the US, the country is falling apart, we are divided, hope we wake up before we FALL.
what is particularly sad about this tragedy is the way Americans just accepted the Warren Commission Report and never DEMANDED to know the facts.
we have obviously been told a LIE, by our OWN government no less.
ours is a government OF THE PEOPLE. we deserve to know the truth.
Americans instead just rolled over and allowed the few men who plotted this crime against humanity to lead us by the nose like sheep through the horror of vietnam and on into today.
I was 12. I remember it better than yesterday. Watching "The Kennedys" has been astounding, but I cannot bring myself to watch the end. Greg Kinnear deserves an Emmy, big time. It's been so many years, but my heart is still broken about JFK, MLK and Bobby.
When the lousy libs found out Oswald was one of their own they quickly went into damage control saying Oswald didn't do it, or was set up by the CIA! Of course nothing has changed with these America haters, it's only much worse with the lies and outright silencing of free speech by these Marxists. Obama himself wants a kill switch for himself to shut of the internet whenever he see's fit to do so!
@Cromag99 Why is it the rightwinger always push the "lone nut" crap? Because they secretly pretty much condone the assassination and the conspiracy behind it.
@Cromag99 You are a moron. Just like the guy who killed Kenedy, with your hatred of "others" and your speaking of other Americans as "America haters" is deplorable, and causes the division we are in. While the REAL America haters, are moving in from overseas, living among the population quietly, and respectfully until....we Americans hate each other so much, and the political climate continues on it's destructive course, they will make their move. Then we'll have to work together, or else ...
NBC was the channel that my family listened to during those 4 days. The country was in shock & so was the world. I remember a story about an African boy on 11/22/63 standing in his village and reciting JFK's entire inaugural address from memory. Many Russians, grief stricken too, had been carrying in their wallets a copy of JFK's American University speech for months. A terrible thing to happen to the man, his family, the country, the world. Sadly, Huntley's comments would apply today.
@scorpio888 Hatred did not kill Kennedy. A nut job with a desperate desire to make a name for himself killed Kennedy. It was not a special interest group or a political party that inspired the killer as Huntley implies.
It was a very sad day. I was 12. I remember gathering with my friends after dinner under a street light on our road as we often did. Everyone was so quiet. There were no cars on the road and no sounds not even of distant cars. It is probably difficult for people who weren't around then to understand, but I believe it was more of a shock to this country even than 9/11. It was certainly as much of a shock.
They mentioned the Stemmons expressway. I've ridden on that expressway before, in a cab. I wasn't alive in '63, but it felt really errie going down that same pathway.
It was mafia. Cosa Nostra is all Jewish. The old Christian Kings knew kick out or contain the jew, try to get him to honest labor. otherwise they destroy your country.
Today in the wake of what happened in Tucson yesterday, Chet Huntley talks to us, nearly 50 years on, on the dangers of hateful, violent speech by highly visible politicians, media commentators and really, all of us. (starting at approx. the 6:30 mark)
As Sheriff Dubnik said in Tucson last night: "It may be free speech, but it does not come without consequences."
@ImDavidGurney not true, just NOT true. if you're referring to anti war violence of '60's that is about a principle that was completely legitimate. And though Bill Ayers and others were wrong (not even debatable) the anti war cause was against a gov't policy of lies and death. When the ROTC building was bomed, it was done at 4:30 in the morning so there would be no people there. That was wrong nevertheless. But it was not about wanting to murder or incite violence against other people.
The hatred Mr Huntley talks about in this clip is unfortunately increasing once again in the United States. Just about a week ago a message posted on Salon.com called for the torture and death of Sarah Palin. It comes from every side and every angle. I don't care for President Obama but I pray for his safety every night because there are sick people out there.
First off. I wasn't alive then. But I have studied it since I was very young
This was the beginning of the end for our country. I honestly believe that. That was a devastating blow to the confidence of the US. The next 10 years after that set the stage for the moral and financial bankruptcy that we will soon default.
@TwistedSister09 - You are aware that he claims he doesn't remember where he was that day, aren't you? The funny thing is, he was in Dallas that morning. No worries, I'm sure it was just a coincidence. GHW Bush is a great American; how dare I criticize him and his whole beady-eyed family!

David Brinkley, Walter Crondike, Chet Huntley et al were nothing but propaganda script readers -- encouraging emotional wallowing instead of investigation and analysis. It was a bloody coup. JFK wanted to end the Vietnam War, the Federal Reserve, and CIA autonomy.
I react really angry to the prepotency the US people show over the world. but honestly, the way they deal with these tragedies that occur in their country makes me feel touched. we don't have that patriotism in my country. I wish we had...
watch the reaction from the lady and man infront of jfk and his wife they guarded they're faces the woman shielded her face with the right side of her face and the man look at the driver and then duck behind the seat in fear of being shot....look closely and you will see fear greer killed kennedy (his brians and blood splatter backwards)
@RainbowManification finally the truth thank you dude...man you have made my day now let me make yours...i apologize for stating my opinion...you win oswald
@RainbowManification i wouldnt to much worry about being charged cause your about to get assassinated...i pray you know God as ur personal savior before then..peace be with you oswald

On October 16, 1972, Boggs disappeared in a plane over a remote section of Alaska. The plane was never found. It was later reported that he had "startling revelations" to make about the JFK assassination.

What were you doing when this happened? Anyone old enough to remember? I was only about three months old. That said it happened right at 12:30 and so many seconds.
@AmericanPowerBase Being mis- or uninformed seems to be @the core of the 100% Americano: LBJ was an old-style New Deal Democrat; later, he became known as liberal. But he was anything but progressive: that title was left, literally, to earlier liberal incarnations like Robert LaFollette & Norman Thomas. Henry Wallace was probably the last politico to deserve the title progressive. These days, the word is used in futility to comic or ironic effect.
When President Kennedy was assassinated I was seven years old. Our second grade teacher, Mrs. Crandell started crying, and that was the first time I ever saw an adult cry. The tears were well spent. He was a tough president, as well as a real war hero of the Greatest Generation. No cheap Purple Heart he! I stayed up all night watching the events, even remembering Mrs. Kennedy not being able to open the back door of the Air Force ambulance/station wagon. And David Brinkley
Where will you go to when you die? Have you ever told lies, stolen, used God's name in vain, or looked at someone with lust? If yes, then you are a lying, theiving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart. When you die & stand before God you'll be guilty of breaking His law. The bible says you'll end up in Hell! So God sent God His Son Jesus to die for your sins, & was resurrected on the third day. If you'll believe the Gospel(Jesus died for your sins & was resurrected) you'll be saved!

JFK is perhaps the most over-rated person in History. And to all you people who think that it took more than one person to do this, get a life. Ole Lee Harvey had a lucky day of shooting. That's it. No grand dramas. Just a leftist with a rifle and sadly fortune on his side.
A&E had did a great job bringing this footage,"As It Happened". It was like you are in a time machine and I never forget in the world of B&W video the only footage of color came from a Forth Worth Texas NBC Affiliate.
I remember it as if it was recently, even though I was 8 years old in Catholic grade school. A tough old German nun ran into our classroon completely unglued. Our teacher had the presence of mind to usher her out the door. She came in looking faint and told us Kennedy was shot. That whole weekend was a nightmare. Monday was declared a national day of mourning. I remember my mom weeping as taps was played at the burial.
President Kennedy was supposed to make a speech criticizing the "fanatical right?" The fucking communist anti-american media hasn't changed one fucking bit. They must HATE the fact that a stinking anti-american communist reject killed their beloved hero. I always felf bad for the Kennedy family for this murder. But it is what it is!!

Lee Harvey Oswald was a Communist...all dictators were far leftists and Communists...Fidel Castro, Kim Jong Il, Hitler, Stalin, Hugo Chavez, Mao-Tse Tung, Moussolini, and the list goes on and on...
ok but in my opinion he was just the scapegoat for the americans who were behind the killing. you need to do more research about the side you come down on, there are bad people on all sides.
@jmad627 I wouldn't call the CIA communist. It was the CIA who killed him and any American who believes otherwise needs to research other nations' news media to get a clearer picture.
My mom was in 6th grade and my dad was in 7th. My mom went to Catholic school and they had to get down and pray right away. They weren't sent home from school though.
@azsun100, interestingly, there was a broadcast convention, and when A.B.C. board chairman Leonard Goldensongot wind of it, he came across the table where N.B.C.'s Robert Kintner was sitting, told him about it, and as a result, he walked out, which led everybody to exit the building.
Everyone can remember where they were when they heard of this, just like I can where I was and what I was doing when I first heard of the 9/11 attacks, it's sad that a lot of people had both of these tragedies happen in their life time
@porkymania90 it's sadder that a lot of people don't see the conspiracy behind it and WHO really killed JFK, MLK, Benazhir Bhutto, Tupac, among others, and the 3,000 souls on 9/11!!!
My parents told me the whole country stopped for 4 days between the assassination of Pres. Kennedy and the shooting of Oswald. Chilling video to watch, even now.
Not just the USA. The whole world stopped for 4 days. Even the Soviet Union paid their respects. It is astounding how much impact this man and his death had on the world. Places from Japan to Europe to Canada had a national day of mourning because of this great man. I doubt even Sept 11 had that effect on the world.
anyone and i mean anyone who believes the warren commission --you have to be a total lover of facism .....kennedy was murdered....and the people who deny it are either scared to think for themselves or are paid to disrupt american freedom.
i was born in 1951 and i assume you were born in 1978.
By the time you get old to retire you are not a productive citizen, in other words you take from the system, not give, as you are doing now. Working and paying taxes.
As the population ages, due to low birth rate, what do you think the government, which has a monolopy on health care, want to do to you?
Thats right, kill you off. EUTHANASIA will be written into health care through rationing the
what world are YOU living in?..im sure YOU pay taxes the same as I do..im sure YOU abide by the same laws of the land like I HAVE to..and by the time im a senior, universal healthcare will be there..so HA!
So sad. But that old lady's huge glasses provide some comic relief. This was before my time but my parents were kids when this happened and they remember exactly where they were when they heard the news...
Censor48 is an idiot. "forced health care"??? HUH? A stupid, meaningless
phrase. And we all know how great a system those wonderful competing
insurance companies have given us, don't we. This is nothing more than the usual nonsensical blather of a right-wing nut job. He probably thinks Glenn Beck is a profound thinker...
i bet you would like to see the same happen to bush when he was president?
we dont need FORCED health care. i like competition for better services to the public by insurance companies. i dont want my HC decisions made by government.
this joker we have as president scares me.
maybe you are a coward and feel good about yourself collecting your entitlements from uncle sam.
i believe in hard work and inventive. which is not encouraged in a socialist government.
You're the DUMBASS if you think Hoover didn't have anything to do with JFK's murder.Hoover HATED John Kennedys guts.Oswald didn't act alone,if at all..
A day when newsmen were totally professional and the sudden and unbelieveable events of that day will forever be engraved into the heart of this country. So much hope, promise, and goals toward a productive future and then suddenly it all ended and this country has never been the same.....
@copper2150 It's almost like the country itself was assassinated. I was 21 at the time, and I have never gotten over it. I kept hoping for somebody else who would be as good. So far, no such luck.
i was in 5th grade and sitting in class when the teacher was called out. I blurted out of the blue the following," I think the president got his brains blown out."
After that day it was proven that nobody is safe in the United States. Now fascism is making its way and people don't even see it...as Max Keiser said it: "RAISE UP"
It looks like every woman is wearing a dress. I remember watching t.v. all that l..o..n..g week-end. We were all in shock. This brings back all the memories!
Why does the one man hold the telephone to the man who was interviewed? He needs to answer the phone call. It may be his girlfriend who is calling. Or if a girlfriend would call it would be on his cell phone. That was a big telephone on the news. They must have big phones in Texas because it is a large state. They serve good t-bones there. I enjoy the hamburgers as well yet not as good as an Iowa casserole my mom used to cook.
completely false. both should be held responsible for their escalation of American involvement in Vietnam, but America had maintained a presence there since the Eisenhower Administration.
And once he was president, Nixon didn't hurry to get us out of Vietnam, so, had he been elected in 1960, he may well have gotten us in there at about the same time that Johnson did, and in a similar way (i.e., Gulf of Tonkin).
Kennedy was to much a threat to the Murchinson, Hunt, Guerini, and CIA. The Bay of Pigs fiasco was at the last minute a plan that was changed due to Castro not being poisoned as planned. It shifted to the Bay of Pigs where there was no logistic or technical support for its success and all those CIA operatives were left hung out to dry. Kennedy withheld the air support and the mission failed. I am convinced that the Cubans, The CIA, via Operation 40 and Alpha 66 were involved in this coup.
R u kidding? we would have a parade! wait is it cheney as well? if so i say 1 week off of work to celebrate!! wishfull thinking... back to reality, us all messed up, debt, economy tanked, b.s. war, no WMD's, taliban back, no money, etc...
This is day when we learned not to trust our government anymore. Oswald shooting at the president with a cheaply made bolt action rifle known for jamming more than it shot. Government officials stealing film from bystandards never to get it back again. In the case of Zepruders, it gets cut by a few frames. A governement who will never reveal who killed JFK until everyone who was there that day is dead.
@timbabcock There was another film also. The person who took it, hid it away undeveloped for many years before it was developed. I don't know what happened with that. Also one cannot escape the fact that a cop ran up the grassy knoll after somebody - who would that have been?
Actually I have very little trust in the federal govt., especially the bigwig Democrats and Republicans. That's why I vote Independent. I still won't say it couldn't have been organized crime or the commies. And yes it could have been somebody from the CIA also, but who would have given the go ahead to do the deed? And why?
They put the press bus all the way at the back of the motorcade on purpose.

Because he has heard a shot from there or seen some commotion going on there.
