Guys to say that one is better than the other is bollox. They are both in the top 1% in the world. It is easy to critise. I wish my kata was as strong as either /or. It is just a shame that there has to be a victor of the match. Notice i said victor not winner. They are both winners, as is anyone who gets off thier arse, enters a comp and has a go. DO YOU?

Also, Luca's Unsu literally sucks.. He is great at Gankaku and Enpi but Unsu is not kata he should perform.. It would be fair if they both do the same kata, which would be chosen by judges. for example :Kaminari. Bad thing is they will never have chance to do it.. R.I.P. Milon

@ekkenaab You can't tell if a guy is tough or not by looking at their kata performances. However the elements in katas can be used in real life situations and I'm pretty sure this 2 guys would manage the situation against any junkies trying to kill them.

Milon, he completes his moves and overall seems to use more heart. Valdesi looks like he is thinking about the medal the whole time during his kata performances.. Sad to see the judging based on quickness rather than what Karate is truly about.

I know all this story about the "evolution" of Karate but I'm not sure how far should it get. I vote for Milon because his movements are more logical. Valdesi can control more his body but his kicks are just TOO fake... no one needs to kick anything above his head and Gankaku it's with Yoko Geri Keage so, doing it with Kekomi it's a "show off". Milon does the necessary and right and with an amazing speed, but controlled as well. I've been training for 12 years :)

Luca Valdesi: Shows more control, precision, and on the few fast techniques he does - demonstrates mastery.

Michael Milon: Impressive kata, I've seen better. To compete, he just wasn't quite crisp enough. Extremely impressive height on his jump. Overall, it lacked that "oomph" to win my heart.

Just seen Osaka sensei doing Unsu and I don't think it is any better. Not in terms of technique, speed and power. There is more lateral shoulder movement in his techniques, whereas here the punches come at you like an automatic machine gun bursts straight from the hip, shoulders dead straight and anchored in cast iron stances.

I like kata that flows and has rhytm and feel. Much as these are obviously two talented karateka I agree that there is something missing. As I get older I am more impressed by a living flowing kata than a succession of extreme techniques. Having said that, everyone is worth watching.

There are diferences even in the place where they did the kata. Valdesi with that kimono + that dark, and millon with that light and strong coto color. But, in my opinion, the way chosen and did by milon in kata Unsu was better than valdesi`s in Gankaku.

A classic throw, Strike to the back of the neck(pressure point) with collar grab(haito) with the kick(leg hook or pendulum swing) and then the body turn. Defence is, Standing on one leg is a "half-Guard" and then the yaku zuki is a reversal to that throw.

If you want to talk about sport karate, then, yes it is an attack to a forehead or an eye poke.

Curious, though, the first kata is what we call Chinto (Shorin-ryu Matsumura). Is it called Gankaku in Shito-ryu or Shotokan?
