@Udonnell The Big Issue is a magazine which legitimately homeless people (not a bogan that lives in the housing commission) sell. They cost around $5 and the vendor keeps from memory $2 from each magazine.
Vendors are usually given approx. 5 magazines where if the 5th magazine is sold they keep the whole $5. The contents of the big issue vary from pop culture articles to world news to politics and so forth. It's essentially time magazine but better written and for a good cause. Google it.
sold by the Homeless, and also the disabled/disadvantaged people who cant work regular jobs for many reasons. everyones got their probs or they wouldnt be doing it.
contrary to whatever you have heard, big issue sellers actually buy the magazines with their own money.
they have to spend a dollar to make a dollar.
if they bought 10 magazines to sell, and didn't sell any at all (it does happen), then its their money on the line.. a hand up yes, hand out no -a big issue vendor
@WarHater69 OK I assumed there was a buy 4 get one free or something along those lines. I didn't disagree that the vendors selling the magazines. I guess it was badly worded but yes they I'm aware they buy them and get if a magazine is sold they come up a few dollars on top. As it isn't my area of expertise, are vendors given say one free mag for every 4 or 9?
Whenever I get to Sydney I always seek out a Big Issue seller and pay more than the cover price for a copy. I know that the money goes to a good cause as well I get a great read for my boring flight home.
k i feel kinda ignorant for asking this, but can someone explain the big issue to me?

@ifyourlistening nar, i wish.. as i explained, its a hand up, not a hand out.
vendors purchase the mags for $2.50ea, and sell them for the $5 cover price,
no way to get cheap or free magazines. to sum it up, a big issue vendor is self employed.
