  • is this guitarist ronnie drew????

  • @wiebe875

Yes, that is Ronnie on the guitar.

  • Been interested to see discussions on here as to the best ballad singer. Paddy Reilly and Liam Clancy seem to be the front runners along of course with Luke Kelly. In my opinion, Paddy Reilly is technically a good singer, very rare, if ever, he drops a note. Liam Clancy has a sweet voice and can put across a song in an exceptional manner. But what, I think, makes Luke Kelly the best of the three is that he feels the song, obvious when you listen and more so when you watch him.

  • Amazing song

  • definitely the best singer Ireland ever had!!!!..what a voice..may he REST IN PEACE LUKE!!

  • Im Glasgow-Irish, I left my home town 20 years ago to find work. When I listen to this it always brings a tear to my eye. Quality

  • The thing i hate most about my age is that i never got the chance to see Luke Kelly live. :(

  • @SuneChristiansen I agree. I never met Luke either. I did meet Ronnie and Barney though.

  • true folk

  • i'm a grown man and i can't listen to this song without shedding a tear.

    sure miss the dubliners.

  • I've watched this clip and read through the comments dozens of times since I became aware of Luke Kelly about two months ago (so much for my green Irish / Yankee upbringing) and this leaves me spellbound each time.

  • Many many thanks Kelloneill! These songs of Luke's are stirring and moving. They bring me way back. Met Luke once at Bodenstown for the annual Wolfe Tone commemeration when I was a snapper. He was such a larger than life character, yet in person a lovely, generous with his time fella. There must be some quare session going on up there with himself, Ronnie, Ciaran, Liam Clanct et al. RIP

  • No one, not even Ronnie can sing this like Luke.

  • me grandfather spent a nite sleeping the drink off wit barney mckenna in a barn in aughrim co wicklow many years ago. great men one and all

  • "The Town I Loved So Well" is a song written by Phil Coulter about his childhood in Derry, Northern Ireland. The first three verses are about the simple lifestyle he grew up with in Derry, while the final two deal with the Troubles, and lament how his placid hometown had become a major military outpost, plagued with violence. It has been covered by The Dubliners and...."

  • Great men they were, Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew :)

  • He died of a brain tumour- not the drink! It might have been better if it had been the drink at least he would have gone out singing and playing his banjo. Get it right if you are going to comment.

  • how did he die ?

  • @hempo450

Paddy and stout took him to a better place with bigger jars and divine whistles

  • kellyoneill you are a godess fore these songs, can not beleve 2 dislike???

  • saw the dubliners many times with my mum when they were in england sadly mum and most of the dubliners are gone but leave happy memories

  • Wow!! He's crying!!

  • Follow that.

  • I am danish - went to see the The Dubliners in Galway in 1968 for the first time. Talked with Ronny and Luke after the concert and asked them why they not did visit Denmark - as I said: you are very popular in Denmark. - Luke said to me: We will and you shall be our manager - i thought he was joking - but i have seen The Dubliners many times in Denmark since

  • @Ravbo1 Thats a beautiful story the Dubs and Luke....wish I could hear more.

  • @Ravbo1 The Dubliners kept Ciaran Burke on the Payroll as an honourary group member...... throughout his ill health ....when he was no longer really active as a musician... that's friendship..... a Real Band ......of Brothers

  • luke kelly will be remembered with the likes of bob marley.legends of music who earned imortality through their music. legends r.i.p.

  • Oh yes, he does have a tear - well spotted. Thanks for your comment it prompted me to listen to the song after work which cheered me up no end. Trouble is I then went on to listen to all my other favourites of Luke Kelly and before I know it an hour has passed and nothing else done! Not many artists have that power as far as I'm concerned!

  • makes me think of grozny.

  • How does he get that quality of sadness in his voice? A true genius is our Luke who will live on through brilliant websites like this!

  • @pavarottifanatic Because if you look at him when he says "I remember the day I got my first pay" you can see a tear roll down his cheek.

  • @MrFoley100 I think that's just sweat.

  • Gone, but NEVER forgotten.

  • thank you!

  • @Adoyle, I'm from London and this is simply amazing. They were probably protestants ;-p haha.

  • @StrikerBueller I'm from a city (Glasgow) and a Protestant family and I fuckin love this. Tiocfaidh ar la.

  • the two people who disliked this are from cities.

  • Thanks for uploading

  • Pour oublier la version française des clowns français "Tri yan"

  • the man is a legend

  • he would have been 70 today if he was alive..god bless ya lukey :)

  • if i write or direct one story or movie in my life time it would be the life story of the Dubliners, they were so great ,I can listen and enjoy alot of music but no other continues to effect me like they do,all of them but especially luke the way he sings this.He makes it so timeless. What can we do to bring this music to more people.

  • Absolutely Brilliant!!! R.I.P Mr Luke Kelly

  • Met Luke and the guys many many times. Glad I lived to see the Dubs live on stage hundreds of times. Just ordinary guys like us all, but each gifted in a very special way. Their like will never be seen again. Sláinte.

    From a Yorkshireman,

    Phil*

  • No one sings this so soulfully as the legendary Mr. Kelly...simply amazing! Thanks, Luke.

  • I get chills everytime I hear this. Just awesome.

  • What a voice, god rest his beautiful soul.

  • I love luke Kelly, a talent that died too young. I don't think we appreciatete him as much as we should, he was an icon.

  • luv dis man sum singer seen da fella canvanah doing tributie to him in armga was good

  • No one can do this song Justice except our dear Luke! God bless ye man...

  • Nobody can keep up with Luke.

It´s one of my most favourite songs.

    It´s haunting.

Yes I think haunting is the appropriate word. It contains painful and wistfulness, but it´s not too depressed and mournful.

  • is that the young kelly fellow called luke kicking ass.

  • The Irish tenors may have better voices but their interpretation, emotion and delivery can not match Luke's.

  • Love it!!

  • Love it!!

  • @TheAwaken2012 ..think its enniscrone ya ment to say!

  • We were so lit we were calling it inyourscrotum, no bad meant by it, great place, loved the sea weed baths

  • Luke died in 1984 Januari.

  • superb performance,incredable banjo playing

  • I have only known the Dubliners since 1993 or 1994 (I don´t know the exact date) and I know nobody of Germany, especially who has my age or younger, who loves the Dubliners or Luke Kelly, but it´s indifferent, I have always done and loved what I want.

But I can not understand that people are not fascinated of Luke.

  • luke died in the 1980s

  • @regen1974

I am from Germany, i am 28 and i am deeply touched and fascinated by the works of Luke Kelly. To me he is the greatest singer of all times.

His spirit and voice inspire me.

Rest in Peace, Luke Kelly, Dubliner!

  • Who is Luke Kelly? He is Irish national singer?;) Please I am from Czech and I see him everywere :)

  • @Eglanns Yes Luke Kelly was a member of the band the dubliners. His voice is powerful and beautiful as you can here and he has some amazing songs.

  • Luke Kelly, was the best Irish Folk singer from Ireland. And he was 44 when he died. He's the lead singer on this one. And he inspired a lot of singers. And he will always remember, by The Dubliners.

  • Agree with you there.

  • what time signature is this in. its difficult to sing this slowly in rhythm and he does it so easily

  • It's pretty easy to count in 4/4.

  • and great, great singer, one of the country best

  • Coolest ginger hair ever

  • gillfee 12 grow up hows is paddys version better you must have wax in both ears get help to clear the holes

  • Why do you think that? To me, his version is good too, but - a bit soft and this song is not ment to be soft at all!

  • gill 12, u havn,t a clue, this man is a legend that has not been honoured as he should have

  • How great Luke was - you can hear it all in this song. So much empathy. It is a "shut up and listen" song!

  • Hearing him sing with such force makes me feel, even at my size, like a cowering child faced with the epithamy of power.

  • where and when was this recorded? is it on the US tour?

  • Belguim 1974

  • this is probably the best singer ireland has ever had ,long live his legacy may he rest in peace .

  • Awesome, Kelly's talent is unique, simply stunning, easily the greatest male vocalist Ireland has ever produced.

The Man Is A Genius...I have no doub't about that....It's a bit late now but I'd loved to have met the guy...His legacy will live forever...Patrick (Ireland)

  • great song

  • But the truths that many a irish man have song is that even no that times seem to change, Ireland and especially derry that ppls attitude wont change, as much as i can say for myself, Ireland i will never see again and i've only myself to blame for that, bitter i stil am.

  • Luke...master of many things..including tempo.......i love the violinist....but on this occasion I feel he's hurrying Luke

  • "the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher", when he sings that line my heart starts racing, such passion in one voice. Great version of this classic, pity there was no live recording of song for ireland

  • What year was this in?

Kelly, a lot of credit to you for all that you have done to keep Luke's legend alive.

*From an American who grew up in an irish household near Boston... (my mom adored the Dubliners)

  • 1974.

  • john is really an amazing musician. He can follow luke's singing so well. The original dubliners were truly something very special the singing and the music go together so well. I wish more people in the states knew just how great they were. Luke, Ronnie, Ciaran R.I.P. Men

Have the privilege of Sean Cannon sharing a song or two occassionally in our pub in Coventry. There is a video on here of him, Sean Cannon Black Velvet Band.

  • I absolutley agree!! those "clubbers" don't know what they're missing!!

  • I second that notion! While club songs may be popular for a summer, songs like this last for decades!

  • @ShingoNL We Sir, are of similar mind. I'm a little bit older (29), but it gets worse with regards to going out n that. I have to choose who I show this to. Oh, And I'm English... Irish decent.. But English. Potato. Sue me. haha sorry dude! Basically, I fucking love this song and this version is beyond the k edward.

  • @ShingoNL Long may you reign, ;)

  • guaille 13 why do you come on a music website and spew your bile. you prick, just appreciate great lyrics, beautiful singing, and the passing of a great and dearly missed man.

  • Here Here!!!

  • You should be allowed to delete the sectarian comments and some of the other ill-informed ones that distract us from some of the Great Recordings You have posted. Think I would agree with cdke4 too

  • no more fuckin arguein people!!just enjoy a great song it sums up how it feels to be irish which is hard to eplain but this song dose it so beautifuly..fuck all that rebellion shit..let the kids of the next generation enjoy their ives in peace..its in the past.....

  • you can't punish a people for the mistakes thet their government made before they were born.

  • I agree !

  • FFS! Every decent Irish song on this website is full of plonkers either arguing and abusing each other about who's version of which song is best or spouting extremist republican crap. It's a great version of a great song by an absolutely great artist. Enjoy it. And be nice to each other.
