I think Questlove from "The Legendary Roots Crew" is the best hip hop drummer.Karriem Riggins is the best hip hop soul drummer,to me theres a difference.Quest doesnt play behind the groove as much, even though he's the man,Karriem plays more behind the grooves which leaves more room for music movement, and because he plays behind the groove it also creates a more neck snapping style to the listeners, like gutbucket style, and hes the only drummer to really capture that dilla,Hi-Tek style on drums
Totally agree with your statements about Questo/Riggins, though I recommend checking out Chris "Daddy" Dave and Daru Jones interpretation of Dillas music if you haven't already. I'd say they also do a very good job capturing that weird swung Dilla-feel on live drums.
That what I'd call useful skills, when technique serves the music...Many drummers (or instrumentists)don't get it most of the time but not Karriem obviously... 8)... Dope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Karriem Riggins is the fucking shit. I saw him with Ray Brown's Trio when I was like 16 and then realized that he is also one of the rawest producers out there.
That's whassup!!! This brother really does what we expect and more... Top shelf fo sho!!! Keep on hoppin'...
