  • Why does anyone need an 18th or 17th Century instrument merely to play so much "bleep blop" noise? I applied several times and sent tapes of my improvisations which are more in the tradition of the North German School: i.e toccatas, fugues and chorale variations. Guess it's considered too passe' or derivative ti improvise actual music and not just so much post modernist noise. I appear to have been born 400 years too late.

  • @NorbertZF I wonder that too! Go to the NCRV web site and listen to the marvellous improvisations that won Piet Kee the Silver Tulip in the early 1950s. This was proper music! Interesting also, to contrast the sound of the great Muller organ as it was then, with how it sounds now, after the 1960 changes made by Marcussen.

But don't give in to the modern trend just to be counted among the "in" set! There are probably folk who outwardly claim to like the "in" stuff, but inwardly despise it!

  • @peteacher52

If you haven't heard of it before, check out Vox Seculorum site. Modern people composing in the baroque style.

You'll be surprised by what you hear!

  • @keraulophone

    Daarom juist?

  • meest beroemde kerk orgel ???

  • Anyone knows the name of the organist there?

  • There are two organists: Anton Pauw (who you can see in the video) and Jos van der Kooy.

  • Thanks. I met Pauw when i was there.

  • @Ntalikeris666 Is Anton Pauw still officially the church organist, or has his status changed to that of civic or recital organist, along with Jos van der Kooy? Prior to Jos van der Kooy's appointment, there were two civic organists, Piet Kee and Albert de Klerk, until de Klerk's death, then Piet Kee alone. St Bavo, the building, is owned by the church, but the organ is owned and maintained by the State. This is why there is the unique situation of 2 separate appointments of organist.

  • @peteacher52 I am not aware if Pawl is still the organist there, but back in 2009 he was.

  • One more remark: the organ at Katwijk was designed as a French Romantic instrument, so it really isn't possible to compare it to the Haarlem instrument. Also, as you can hear in the video, there are comments about the arched roof in the Bavo and how that contributes to the generous acoustic - perhaps too generous? Clarity of sound is always a problem in such situations.

  • Unfortunately, this organ was "restored" to be an all-purpose instrument. Indeed, the festival participants were required to play Messiaen on it. Klaas Bolt wrote about the purpose and design of this organ as it was originally intended - to accompany large numbers of people singing psalms! Note the illustration of the opening of the Franck "Final." Wrong piece for this organ!

  • Yes... Unfortunately. This used to be a marvellous Christian Muller. It is simply unbelievable that one can indulge oneself in such a primitive whim...
