  • @filmcomposerz HE'S A REVIEWER!!!! ...... USE YOUR BRAIN.

  • got mine 3 days ago...being a 5N heavy user I am disappointed :-( .The high iso on the 5N is much better, less noisy....

  • got mine 3 days ago...being a 5N heavy user I am disappointed :-( .The high iso on the 5N is much better, less noisy....

  • Finally i got it! Second in Estonia. 2 days and it feels AMAZING!

  • same optic lens is on my nokia n8

  • got this set - :0) amazing stuff Sony - thank you - 5D2 got retired...

  • Pentax-Ricoh should learn from this~.... Their new release - the Pentax K-01, is damn ugly, with NO optical/electronic viewfinder~!!!

    (A disappointed Pentax user)

  • this free apple music sucks

  • OMG!!!

Just bought my very first dSLR a couple of months ago...

I really wanted to have the Sony NEX-5 then because i have toddlers and a baby.Just for their baggage is too much for me to bring a dSLR camera and its lenses. But Sony here in Japan is only in Japanese characters :(

Now i really want this so BAD!

  • vignetting ...

  • hope this will not hurt my pocket when this is released!!!!

  • @an2ny81 $1200 for body, $1350 for kit.

  • the mac daddy of all nex's

  • My lumix gx1x can do that without problem. Maybe the nex-5n is a better choice for price and is the same performance.

  • @mimstyle I have the Nex 5n and i miss the electronic viewfinder and duals dials, i want to bouy this camera

  • I have that Zeiss lens for my nex-fs100 and although its very nice, I wish it had image stabilization and I think it pays off better with a still image not so much of improvement with video.

  • jesus christ

  • I have no idea why anyone would get a compact body and then put a huge lens on it. This pretty much defeats the minimisation philosophy behind the mirrorless system. The body does look very practical though.

  • @Esrhan The answer is very simple. Big image sensors need big lenses. This camera has the same size as a DSLR camera. it wouldn't work with a compact lens.

  • @geoffphuket

Not a very good apology for bad lens design. If you don't have good pancakes or even small primes, then I see even more reason to get a small DSLR over a tiny NEX. Put the lens on and the size advantage is completely gone.

  • @Esrhan That's life.lol. Unless someone changes the law of physics, DSLR optical lenses will always be large. To be honest, my best pictures were taken with a Sony DSC WX5 compact, mainly because it's always in my shirt pocket and 'at hand' to capture the moment.

  • @geoffphuket

Glad I went for the micro four thirds standard then which seems to hit the sweet spot. The sensor is big, but not too big to distort the size of the lenses and preventing them from being miniaturized.

And you can't stop your story there. I want to see the pictures. Do you have a gallery online or anything? :p

  • I had to stroke my nex 5n during this video

  • do you think its worth the money?

  • Its a shame they're so expensive. You can buy a DSLR with a few lenses for the same price.

  • bhphotovideo sales for 1,300 rip off

  • i wanted to buy it, too bad it is not yet out when i am able to

  • when will this be released?

  • @Tazaiyar1 it is released

  • @kokfah well who sell it? because frys electronics, bestbuy, wolfcamera, and sony style dont not carry it yet...

  • @kokfah Well who sells it because frys electronics. bestbuy, wolf camera, and sony style do not have it yet.

  • @Tazaiyar1 well, tell u the truth.. i dunno myself :P while in this country.. all i know is that it is released. not gonna buy it though, it is few months away when i am about to buy a new camera. can't wait, bought canon 60D instead. i have a NEX 5.

  • SCRUBBY!

  • This or the Nikon V1 ?

  • @spearmintmonkey Take the Fujifilm X100 if you own a DSLR.

  • @spearmintmonkey NEX7 but you do pay more for it.

  • I creamed

  • Nice review of a seemingly great camera. For me, I'd have to have the large real dial set as exposure compensation, like on my Canon DSLRs; the right tri-navi dial at top as my ISO selection. Just my preference.

  • Wow. This lens is so big! I feel sorry for Sony NEX owners. They'll never get small pancakes like the Panasonic 20/1.7 (which is wider too!).

  • @BoxxyFan Smaller sensor though so a 1.7 wont be as effective.

  • @simon44 gigantic lens though, so wont be as effective at being portable.

  • @BoxxyFan Use a pancake prime lens then. Better results from them too

  • @simon44 You mean the only pancake that Sony has which is completely unusable at f/2.8 and is incredibly soft in the corners and performs worse than most basic compact point and shoot cameras? Buy $1200 body and stick a $100 lens on it! BRILLIANT!!

  • @BoxxyFan No need to get sarcastic about it. You can alwas use an adapter and use other make lenses. However, that might make it too big. I'm surprised Sony only has one pancake lens.

  • @simon44 Your advice for a better pancake is to use an adapter and get a manual focus lens? Okay, so that makes it 3x-4x longer than the pancake and you lose autofocus. Worst advice ever. Don't ever give advice to anyone for a living.

  • @BoxxyFan I just said it might make it too big. You're a very argumentative person aren't you!? I hope you're not like that with everyone. I would advise you dont give advice if you're going to be so negative.

  • @simon44 There is no doubt a manual focus lens with an adapter will make it significantly larger than the pancake lens. Use some fucking common sense, idiot.

  • @BoxxyFan I love you

  • @BoxxyFan Soft at the corners, agreed, it has a higher FOV. Prove everything else to me, because merely stating that's it's a hundred dollar lens doesn't quite convince me that it's worse than a point and shoot.

  • I hope you or Sony can do a review on tethered shooting with this camera.

You & Sony won't be able to.

That why many have (NEX-7 and A77) been returned back.

Good luck on shooting in the studio lighting or wireless flash..the EVF or LCD is black.

Pretty stupid on Sony parts for taking a must feature out.

  • jump to 1:09 if you want to skip the music and masturbation.

  • Nice camera but overpriced

  • Zeiss 24 f1.8 for such an expensive lens the reviews I've read aren't that great. Apparently, it's a bit soft and there is some colour fringing at f1.8. Add to that the size and I'm not sure I'd want that with a Nex 7. As far as I'm concerned the main reason for buying a small camera is that you want SMALL including lenses.

  • is it my screen or does the NEX 7 have some aliasing problems, get back to me on that.

  • with the limited choice of lenses and the lack of connectors but the control system looks great

  • I like the trinav and most of the features, but at the price they want without IS it not worth it to me I will buy something else.

  • @surflou24 the nex 7 uses Sony's proprietary flash mount which is capable of hosting an adapter to mount a wireless trigger from the likes of pocketwizard. In short, yes.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi Steve, can this replace a D-SLR in a studio? Would it be possible to shoot with external flash lights using wireless remote controlling?

  • wowww!i love the quality of images of this

camera :)! Do you know you can make Time

    Lapse Photography with this camera?

These guys have an infrared time-lapse

remote for SONY NEX 5, 5N and NEX 7, and

for every major brand of cameras! Check the

    website: tempus.bymac.org

  • how much did you pay for it?

  • Your neighborhood looks like southern France, that's wicked

  • Who delivered the camera to you? I didn't get that maybe if you repeated it 10x instead of 5x we could remember. We know your special...just give us the facts dude. I don't care how you got your hands on it. REALLY

  • At last, a mirrorless APS-C camera with built-in EVF as well as flash. This model, to my mind at least, represents a positive step towards the future development of not only a more compact alternative to a DSLR, but one where compact LED EVF display cameras might eventually spell the end of DSLRs altogether. Indeed that may be a long way off, but the NEX 7 style camera seems to be something that is truly paradigmatic, a new species that is here to evolve.

  • U cant go wrong with the NEX7

  • IT'S SO FUC**** AWESOME !

  • I think this will be a Great Camera but...

I wish it had IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization). The use of legacy lens (considering the limited number of Sony lens) would benefit greatly from it.

  • I just want to say "Great Review"! Thanks Steve :)

  • Definitely upgrading to this from NEX-5.

  • Damn that's a huge TV!

  • 5N: cheaper, touch screen magnification for better manual focus, better low light, less noise. 7: tri dial, can put a flash or videomic (with hot shoe adapter) on it, better ergonomics. Hey Steve have you compared the 3200 video of the 5n to the 3200 video of the nex 7? Does it seem to have a big difference quality/noise/dynamic range wise?

  • It is soooo expensive!!! but i want it so bad!!!

  • how much?

  • Wow. That lens is GIGANTIC. Would rather get a Fujifilm x100 with it's pancake 24/2. Much smaller and portable.

  • Steve run into any clicking issues like from the SONY NEX 5N?

  • Cool..wats d price????

  • This camera is now in new york? (nex7)

  • awesome dog.

  • It does not click because it doesn't have IS in camera. That's the one that ckicks in NEX 5,,,

    Greatd camarea, this one!

  • @SnakeBiteCC No IS in all NEX cameras I'm affraid.

  • In a "first look" review on the imaging-resource site the author stated :

"...when set to NTSC mode, the available progressive-scan rate are 60 fps or 24 fps, and you can also opt for an interlaced 60 fps. If you switch to PAL mode, the options are the same, except that the 60 fps rates are replaced by 50 fps equivalents, and the 24 fps rates by 25 fps ones."

It seems to indicate that it is possible to switch between PAL and NTSC.

Can you confirm whether or not this is in fact true.

    Thanks

  • nex-7 is great. Besides the fact that battery sucks, the lens are absolutely horrible, and it's super overpriced. Besides that its alright.

  • STEVE HOLT!

  • AAAHHH!!!! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SEXY LENS! wanna sell it?

  • Like your reviews a lot Steve! I'm in it mainly for the video. Do you suggest the NEX-5n or the NEX-7? I would have already bought the NEX-5n but the built-in EVF of the 7 stopped me in my tracks...

  • The controls of the other NEX units is why I got the Olympus Pen EP3 instead.

  • I'm in the UK, do you know when it will be available here and what's the rrp? cheers

  • Great video and this is still a preview!! Can't wait for the full on review. Good work Steve

  • great video, lucky man for getting you hand on a nex 7. Are you planning on getting your nex 5n fixed by sony? ( I am assuming your nex 5n clicks as well). I got mine and it definately clicks and I want to send it in but very few videos on youtube showing the fixed 5n. (no click)

  • Looks great.

Although the in house video shows some serious shadow banding @ 8:02

  • @ashatron656 Yeah that banding is pretty obvious and awful =(

  • i have ordered the nex 7 and will recive it on november 15th cant wait and i have 28 days to try it out and if i dont like it i can send it back for a full refund not bad eh i remember yrs ago when people said digital cameras will never catch on ya right how wrong were there

  • Damn, this camera looks so awesome (but the 24mp...).

But the size of the lens is just ridiculous, it has almost the same dimensions as my Zeiss ZE 35mm f2 and that's a FULL FRAME lens. Compared to the 20mm Lumix and the lens in the Fuji X100 (which costs as much as the 24mm alone) it's simply gigantic.

I sold my NEX due to the lack of lenses and don't regret it as the new lenses are way too big. Shame, because a system is only as good as its lenses, you can't take pictures with just a sensor.

  • @BananaCake26 The Zeiss lens does not have AF which makes lenses bigger. Also, the Zeiss lens is better quality than the Fuji which is very soft at f/2, in the sides and corners. Quality and AF takes size. The Fuji lens also has manual aperture control which cuts down on size.

  • Comment removed

  • @stevehuff1969 Fuji lens also has a shutter allowing flash-sync at all speeds, and a 9-blade aperture vs. 7 for the Sony. Understand your excitement, but let's be fair. The X100 is selling like hot-cakes, and one reason is its superb Fuji lens.

  • @stevehuff1969

Sure about the Zeiss not having AF?

The Danish Sony site states that it has (with the power of Google Translate:) "Smooth, quiet autofocus plus direct manual focus" :)

It sounds weird that Sony would write it has AF, if it did not :S

Please enlighten me, O' Photo Guru!

  • @stevehuff1969 Yes quality and AF takes size then just buy a DSLR.... this camera is the best camera ever on paper.. but in reality, it just doesn't make sense. Mounting a DSLR lens on a compact is ridiculous..

  • @BananaCake26 I'm pretty sure this lens is expected to sell to their videographer consumers. For it's price, it compliments the Sony VG10, VG20, and FS100 very nicely.

  • @BananaCake26 They made a Canon EF adapter for it, among other things, so how exactly are you limited by lenses?

  • @rsmith1240

Like most, I don't care about adapting lenses, esp- SLR -lenses, because:

    - Adapting big & heavy SLR lenses nullifies the whole point of mirrorless (significantly reduced size & weight). No point in huge lenses on tiny cameras with less functionality.

    - No autofocus & no exif-data on adapted lenses.

    - Lenses specifically designed for the system always give superior results.

    - Cost: the adapter you named costs 400 bucks alone, that will get you a lens for another system.

  • @rsmith1240

    > Canon EF adapter< made by Sony?< No way. Where did you get that info?

  • I just ordered my NEX 5N and will be in tomorrow! (10/12/11) but I'm wondering if i should just return it for this monster of a camera! or just save my $ and that that beautiful Zeiss glass <3 I don't doubt that the ISO is good considering the size of the sensor. but i don't really want to edit RAW 24mp files... It is over kill for my shooting needs. But i really could benefit from the external controls... yea.. I'm a bit torn with this...

  • The lens look amazing

  • Do a size comparison with the Leica M9 please!

  • Steve I find it funny that you always say, "If it will replace my M9" many of us knows that will never happen. =P Well... Until Leica decides to release an M10.

  • what video mode did you shoot in?

  • Just sent my NEX-5N in for "repair" to fix the clicking noise. Congrats on the NEX-7, must be nice to have Sony favor you like that :p I'm sure you earn their favor tho as a pro.

  • This is the first close-up look of this camera in a very well executed video! Awesome!

  • good job man!! i just got NEX 3 and feels really good! now i want NEX 7!

  • can you do a side by side with the 5n.. and the same 24/1.8 vs 18-55. thanks

  • @JogBird I do not own a 5n. Cameras that I review and get for review all have to be returned. I did not keep the 5n as I ordered this 7, which I will get in November. Until then I get to play with this one :)

  • Sony + Carl Zeiss <3

  • How is the the focusing speed? is it better than E-P3? and is feel better to use than X100? Thanks looking forward to your review!

  • @FukingHero Focus is slower than E-P3, and it feels better to use than the X100 as it is faster and has a GREAT EVF.

  • Nice, sadly I'm in Scotland so that's that. Impressed! Cheers Steve.

  • Where did you get the leica mouse mat Steve ?

  • @thesrpspaintshop At central camera in Chicago. They gave us 20 of them for the workshop I had there a few weeks ago.

  • I just got the nex-5n and I'm enjoying it, but this 7 is the next camera for me — when I can afford it!

  • Can't wait -- your review will let me know if I need to cancel and look at something else !!

  • thx for this first look video. steve for president !!

  • I can't wait to get your real world shooting impressions. I've been watching for news on this camera but real impressions are not yet that common. if possible, can you comment on your experience with different storage media, low light high ISO impressions, charging experience and AF accuracy. Thanks in advance.

  • @FrodoDojo WIll do!
