I know the NHL isn't interested in solutions that even the playing field, but for the sake of argument, here's how I'd fix this problem. You'd put these clowns from the League that sit up in their box seats twiddling their thumbs and getting drunk when there isn't a goal to review and make them use the extensive cameras they have to make calls. The ref would have an earpiece in and between whistles make the appropriate calls. Then you'd change the criteria for penalties, resulting in fewer.

I know the NHL isn't interested in solutions that even the playing field, but for the sake of argument, here's how I'd fix this problem. You'd put these clowns from the League that sit up in their box seats twiddling their thumbs and getting drunk when there isn't a goal to review and make them use the extensive cameras they have to make calls. The ref would have an earpiece in and between whistles make the appropriate calls. Then you'd change the criteria for penalties, resulting in fewer.

@mic01 I am a Philadelphian and Flyers fan living near Toronto. Although not a Leafs fan, I was very excited about the '93 Leafs and really do believe that they would have won the Cup that year against Montreal had they made it to the finals.
Unfortunately, an all Canadian final, although amazing to see, would have been bad for American TV, so I think it was inevitable that L.A. was going to make it to the finals somehow, with a little "help from the refs.

I'm not saying the game's results would be different had this not happened (Leafs won btw), but it would be a lot better for both teams to be able to say "We won/lost because we were the better/worse team tonight". Poor officials = excuses, and excuses ruin rivalries. Bettman is destroying the NHL day by day.

The Leafs were in the Campbells and the Habs were in the Whales so yes they would have played each other in the finals. I'm not sure why they changed to all the conferences and divisions, it was a mistake in my opinion and insulting to the famous hockey players the divisions and conf. were named after.

Same thing happened in the '94 finals. Bure gets the gate, Messier 4 minutes for the same penalty. What's the difference? Bure was a rising star, but Messier was a well-respected veteran and future hall of famer. It's the same thing with this "divers list." They'll never admit to a conspiracy against TEAMS, but certainly if you're Alex Burrows, you'll get a call against you and chances are if Crosby does the same thing he'll get nothing. There's a hierarcy in hockey.
