A gun can do nothing on its own. For example (I'm not recommending that anyone does this AKA do not try this @ home kids) I could set a gun on my table in condition 0 (cocked, ready to fire & safety off) guess what? Random death penalty. Take 10 criminals, make them draw straws & execute all but one, who serves the rest of his original sentence.

In the US, this would drop the numbers from 2.5 million to just 250,000, saving billions of Dollars.

I have no problem with the death penalty for clear cases of murder, in other words lots of witnesses or a well-vetted confession. But the prisons are full of 'criminals' who really aren't that dangerous. The purpose of prison should be to keep truly dangerous people separated from a free society.

How about just ending the drug war and sending all non-violent offenders to work farms?

There are no clear cases. If there were, we would not have had to use courts. The government cannot be trusted with our money, moreso it cannot be trusted with our lives. Allowing the government to kill is the same as making the lynch courts legal, there is absolutely no difference. Governments of the world made so many mistakes, which were originally considered clear cases, that humankind lost the count. Nothing helps - fingerprints, DNA, retina scans, fibre analysis, you name it.
