There is a common misconception that "Classical Gas" was composed and performed by Eric Clapton. Clapton has never recorded a cover of the song. This misconception may possibly be attributed to the fact that Clapton was musical director of, and played much of the guitar music for, the feature film The Story of Us. Wikipedia says that Eric Clapton has never recorded a cover to this song. I believe this is really the 1970 acoustic version by guitarist Mason Williams who originally composed and performed Classical Gas then released it in 1968.

For some reason, this individual decided on his own authority to attach Eric Clapton's name to this raw masterpiece. This is not his playing style. This is Mason Williams from his Hand Made album. I'll upload Eruption and attach Jimi Hendrix to the title. Let's see if we get a comment like, "This may be the best song written in the history of human life."

Well that's just not true. You know who it's by, you know that Clapton never made an *official* version of this song (I say official because he may have played it in his spare time...) So why do you choose to keep the title the same?

Clapton is a great guitarist. He's not the best; in my opinion Joe Bonamassa is--but that of course is a matter of opinion. This is not a matter of opinion because it is not Clapton's song.

This is such an awesome piece of music. Maybe it is my favorite piece for guitar. I like how both Clapton and Williams each approach it with their own unique style. Personally, I find that Clapton's seems a bit smoother than Mason William's verison. Clapton seems to sort of roll smoothly throught he piece.  He also builds intensity. Nevertheless, when I hear Mason's version, I think about the Olympics and the height of human achievement. This is a true masterpiece.

@380mbward This is Mason Williams on his 2nd release of CG Its on his album "Handmade" Warner Bros WS-1838 released 3/10/70. The first release in 68 won 3 gramys had an orchestra, and a middle section not played in this release. Unlike most artists, Williams owns the publishing rights to his songs and has released many versions. Its still the most broadcast, covered, taught, used in film and tv solo guitar instrumental of all time. There is no Eric Clapton version.

First of all, everybody should know that Mason Williams wrote and performed Classical Gas. Second, anyone who knows Clapton and his preferences knows this is not him playing.
