This was going to be my intro to the Georgia state of mind when I was going to live there in March 1988. It's a lot more sublime than living in the environs of Ft. Benning/Columbus, GA I tellya.
Document - Their best album IMHO. I think they lost their way a bit after AFTP. However they were a great band whose music will continue to be enjoyed for decades...
Rolling Stone once called REM "The hippest band in America". I feel that REM has the sweetlest melodies with the most thoughtful lyrics since the Beatles., with only Morrisey as even close. I'm interested to hear what you Brittish youth think.
America's finest hours were 1.) Washington's crossing of the Delaware on Christmas Night, 1776, so as to surprise & defeat the fearsome Hessians back during the darkest & most precarious days of the Revolution!
2.) Dec. of 1941 till September 1945, when America's direct involvement in WW2 forever changed the course of that seminal, World spanning conflict & history itself, allowing the USA to emerge as the most powerful nation of all time!
3.) July of 1969, when we put this MAN ON THE MOON!
@sxlfkta hhhhmmmmm dont forget about us brits!!! you may be one of the most powerful nations but we have the most highly trained and dedicated soldiers on the planet.......FACT.......
wow. lots of impassioned comments. Simply, I don't like this VEVO corporate, parental presence on youtube so I'll continue to enjoy this great song elsewhere.
Quite a few people will not 'get' all of R.E.M.'s songs such as this because this song is political. To appreciate this song one needs to not only be a music lover but also to be able to understand music on a higher level. How many songs can we say about that today?
I admire the venerability of wanting to work towards the common good, but socializing our economic system will NOT accomplish this. At first socialism works, until the rich get sick of paying the way for the poor. Granted, some of the poor couldn't help but being poor, but a majority of them are there for a reason.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Is Capitalism perfect? Not by any means, but it is the best solution for a people who desire to be free and make as much money as they please. If everyone loved each other like God calls us to, then Capitalism would flourish like never seen before.
the notion that the rich pay the way for the poor coupled with the assertion that they are somehow entitled to profit from the toil of others is skewed and tragic. Socialism is a classless system, there are no rich. It doesn't work and it's your fault.
@thehenchcroft The rich become rich by the labor of the poor. They become rich at the toil of the poor. Is that more moral than vice-versa? The notion that the rich will act in a moral fashion has been proven wrong endless times throughout history over and over and over. Government regulation is necessary to prevent people from exploiting each other. Every law we have is a form of government regulation designed to keep people from exploiting each other. I like the rule of law.
@pvogl88 Your first comment contradicts your second. You acknowledge that the rich are not willing to treat others with love and compassion and will stop doing it. Your second comment states that only if people will do this will capitalism work. Which is it?
The secret is having a goal in mind for your work. If your values are capitalist by default as opposed to working toward the greater good of sharing so everyone has enough...

I told the priest,
'Don't count on any second coming'
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming.
He had the balls to come
the gall to die
and then forgive us
No I don't wonder why,
I wonder what he thought it would get us.
