@Wonkabar007 Agreed wholeheartedly! When Hollywood wasn't afraid of an ending where the good guy doesn't always win and conversations (such as that between Richard Wirdmark and Sidney Poitier) changed from happy to angry in every sentence to sentence making the viewer feel uneasy.
@rbrooks2007 its amazing to realise that this ending nearly happened for real, during the Cuban missile crisis, USN ships used practice depth charges to try and make a Soviet sub surface, they didn't know the sub has a nuclear torpedo onboard, the sub captain was close to firing the torpedo, luckily he was talked out of this course of action, by other officers.
The Coontz-class DDG (like the fictional USS Bedford here) has to be, hands-down barnone, THE most beautifully-designed US destroyer of the post-World War II era. Ten of the class were actually designed and built between 1958 - 1962, starting with the USS Farragut. Sleek, fast, manueverable and, as Captain Finlander mentions: "...she can inflict more damage than all ships put together in World War II...EXCELLENT FILM "The Bedford Incident"! LOVE IT!!
ursa41: Absolutely agree! I just watched it for the umpteenth time again today! One of the best Cold War thrillers, and yes, "grossly underrated!" I don't think most people know of it. Didn't you love Balsam's "You DIRTY BASTARD!!" He finally had enough of Finlander's abuse. What a scene!!! My thanks also to you "warmovie001" for posting this. One of the best!
Man, I'd never thought ANYONE would post THIS ONE! One of my biggest favorite Cold War thrillers, "The Bedford Incident" has always been, in my opinion, grossly underrated! This film was immaculate, and with such top-of-the-line stars like Richard Widmark, Sydney Portier, Martin Balsam and Eric Portman...Christ! They do not come any better than this. A million thanks for posting a true winner of a film!! You're the best,warmovie001 - your callsign is indeed justified.
they put a match to the film and burned it to make it look like an a bomb hit the ship in hell and high water they took out some of the colors in the real a bomb blast film so no one could detect what elements were used by spectroscopic analysis
The best Cold War film ever, and a totally awesome ending.

Imagine the damage a crazy guy like that captain could do if he were President?
