There will be an episode on A&E's Storage Wars where Barry Weiss finds a tether car in a storage unit. It should be aired a week from Thanksgiving Day 10pm eastern, but check your local listings
@GoRacingWantagh I just watched that 2 minutes ago. I've seen nitro cars before, but never tether cars. Very cool. Especially because I'm a small engines mechanic.
@GoRacingWantagh A competition. A sport is defined as a competitive PHYSICAL activity, and a personal lack of appreciation for watching a car go round in circles aside, there is no real human input that affects the outcome of the race once the race has started. Even drag racing has drivers accelerating, lightly steering and braking. Not that I don't think radio controlled cars are lame either but why anyone would prefer this to even that is beyond me.
@SafffOneee These cars are custom built. You can't walk into Wal-Mart and buy one. It takes a tremendous amount of engineering skill and patience to build and race one of these cars competitively.
@GoRacingWantagh Relevance? I'm talking about why this cannot be called a sport. And if you mean what I think you mean, all that stuff you mentioned happens before the race. Once that car is set off it stays on a set course that is independent of any human input.
@SafffOneee actually your definition of a sport is a bit off. The only real difference between a sport and a game is a written down set of rules that provide competition and allow for a winner. Sorry to say this is a sport. I do not believe video game playing is a sport either, but stadiums in Korea and $100,000s in prize money make it a more popular sport than most professional traditional sports. Aka bowling.
My Dad was an old school racer too. He hung out with Dick McCoy, and I'm sure he knew your dad. He ran with Frymire and the Torreys, never won the Nationals but was fast enough to make them sweat.
My Dad was Bill Pistoll...I raced these cars as a kid a few times and grew up watching him build and race. ...Some incredible memories! He did this for most of his life until he died in 1996. Thanks for posting this video!!
If anyone is interested in buying some of these cars...get in touch with me through Youtube. My dad built some of the fastest tether cars in the world.
tethered car racing is a lot of good fun, we race an early mccoy and a thimble drome champion from late 1940s, we actually can see the cars go round at speed, it looks great to see them go arround after 50 years, but thats old school cars, todays cars are a work of art, so so much technology today and they moved like a rocket, lots of progress thats for sure , but either way all up great pass time!!anybody got some loose spares for my Mccoy ??cheers down under
Can someone tell me what the point is? Looks kinda boring to me but I also don't have any idea what they're trying to achieve. If someone could fill me in maybe I could appreciate this more.
Is everything about enigeering my friend, this is the most important thing, build the fastest car is not easy, the real contest is on the lab not on the road
Why did he hit it with the broom also I have a Cox Thimble Drome Spitfire plane and a Cox Helicopter I don't know anything about them a lady gave them to me after her husband died but the plane has two little things coming out the side with strings on the and they both have real engines in them are these the same as the cars but the Helicpoter has no where to put strings I don't think but has a motor can someone tell about these
I feel quite stupid. I'm 40 years old and I never heard of tether cars/racing until I stumbled across a video the other day. My first reaction was that it must be a new hobby but then I learn it's been around for years. Very cool! What are the steps for someone to get started? I live in Oregon and I would be very surprised to learn of a track here.
No need to feel that way. While the sport is older than you, participation in the USA has declined over the years. It's very active in Eastern and Western Europe. Unfortunatley, the closest track to you is in Southern California. You can contact AMRCA dot com to learn more and if you're interested you can join the association for $20.
Yo GoRacingWantagh! I wanted to drop by and say thanks for posting this and adding credibility to my video. The first time I saw tether cars I was BLOWN AWAY! SOme may think there's nothing to this but they're wrong; when you're pushing for 1/1OOths of a second, every little tweak you can come up with makes a huge difference: from mixing the fuel to waxing the car body. Keep 'em screamin'! :-)
I'm trying to promote the sport in this country because it seems the U.S. doesn't have the engineering expertise it used to have 30 years ago. The engineering and fabrication these guys do to get their cars to go another MPH is incredible. These racers are among the best engineers in the world. I devote this page to the late Nick Tucci, my daughter's great grandfather who was an avid racer for 60+ years.
you got that right mate, what a shame thats for sure, trouble is here in Australia, they have banned fire works,BB guns, sling shots, most cap guns ??? we all grew up on fun things right ?? no wonder the kids are drugging themselves, and stabbing each other these days, the stupid spineless polotitions and the do gooders they love to bow down to,, have screwed it all up over the last 20 to 30 years, thether cars should be in every town, and in school class as a sport, god what has happened ??
Catch that with you hand!

I guess that makes indy "not a sport." Take your negativity elsewhere.
evotuc 1 year ago
@evotuc actually he was saying that this requires no Human input as to how well the race goes after the race has started.
so he didnt say indy was "not a sport" he said this was not a sport. there is human input into a indy car.
i would consider this a competition... not a sport.

the purpose of the guy with the broom is to stop the force of the car by tapping it, to slow it down.
C00O0O002 1 year ago
whats the point of the guy with the broom?
sailorkid94 2 years ago 3
@sailorkid94 there is a small lever at the top of the car that cuts off the fuel. The broom is used to trip the lever without damaging the car
GoRacingWantagh 2 years ago 3
@sailorkid94 There is a fuel shut off lever that sticks up above the car. The broom is used to trip the lever.
