dumbass umpire. players can't challenge after the umpire announced the score BUT he should do so only after checking with the player see if he wanna challenge or not in a reasonable timeframe. you don't just rush off announcing the score then say you can't challenge because I announced the score.

@plstrom im not a tennis master, if you say that 6 seconds is a lot to understand that you must be right, but atp must teach players again because rafa had the same problem the next day, in my opinion its realy unfair because you have to understand a weird situation in 1 second being tired and confused, but i think the rule is that because players ask too many eyes, in the final nole ask twice eyes that couldnt win only to rest a while.

In the other matches it wasn't the same context. Also hawkeye is not an ESPN thing. Why don't you do research?

I think the ATP need to sort their act out with stuff like this. Nalbandian got fined because he complained about having taking too long to challenge. Federer got fined against del potro for swearing about del potro taking too long to challege. This is ridiculous. I can't understand: How the umpire can overrule after 4 hours and 35 minutes of playing in the fifth set with 8 games all and break point. And the worst thing of this that he overruled not being sure if the ball was out or not. He knew that he was wrong so then he said that is too late for challenge. Nalbandian had 2 challenges remaining. Cmon most of the people defend David and the best idea that organization has is giving him a $8.000 fine?. This umpire should be penalized.

@megagman9 Margaret Court Arena DOES have hawke eye this year. I should know because I was a line umpire on the court myself this tournament. RLA, Hisense & MCA are the courts with hawke eye technology in 2012.

@catbaz007 there was a hawkeye replay (ESPN, not on court) and the ball was out. After being cleared up of what happened, Nalbandian took 7 seconds to challenge, way less than a lot of the players on tour. Go research before you post.

@NeftysFrona if you have problems with inconsistency between umpires take it up with ATP. Don't blame the individual umpire enforcing the rules and calling what he sees. That's his job, and he did it. The umpire asked Nalbandian several times if he wanted to challenge without a response. He had plenty of time and opportunity in that situation and he took too long. In the other matches it wasn't the same context. Also hawkeye is not an ESPN thing. Why don't you do research?

If he can't cope with not getting a challenge he wants when he asked for it AFTER the umpire had called the score and he lets that rattle him into losing, he needs to take the blame for that. If he thinks it's unfair, he should have challenged sooner. I see you are misinformed. There actually IS a rule about how long you have. It's not a defined number of seconds, but the rule says you have to challenge promptly and cannot take more time than is necessary. He took too long and missed out. I feel sorry for him, but it's his own fault

please. he took forever. the umpire waited a respectful time, then called the score. once he's called the score he can't go back and allow a challenge. it should have been a no brainer for nalbandian. yes it sucked for him, but he made the wrong choice and he didn't react well to it (in that he lost his focus and thus lost the match). I think the ATP need to sort their act out with stuff like this. Nalbandian got fined because he complained about having taking too long to challenge. Federer got fined against del potro for swearing about del potro taking too long to challege. There needs to be consistency or this would have never have happened, and what a stupid time to even think about not letting a player challenge. A good umpire in tennis is never noticed cos thats his job, a bad one can ruin the outcome of a match

This is one of the top touring professional umpires in the world & he should be admired for not getting swayed by angry players & a booing crowd & instead following the rules that govern the sport. It was to do with Del potro taking 20 seconds to challenge a ball at the USO and then federer complaining (and swearing) and getting a fine. The umpire should not have let delpo challenge because it was too long. May argument was, there is no consistency with what all umpires (even this one) do with challenges. Therefore, the umpire wasn't in the wrong for not letting nalbandian challenge in this point, but he is massively in the wrong (as with all umpires) for letting players take too long to challenge. That's my point, if you admit that the umpire wasn't in the wrong for this instance, you have to admit he is in the wrong for every other time he has let a player take too
