@THErealJEBUSdude thanks... the thing i enjoy doing most is by FAR playing guitar... i got my new guitar, a seagull performer mini jumbo, and played it so much that now 3 weeks later i have tendinitis... i play 1 hour each day instead of my usual 4-5 :L
@TheFawmaw it's among the top three, for sure:D.... but tommy has a unique style that belongs to him and him alone.... and it's interesting how he can spread that to obtain such different melodies
My dads friend went to school with tommy in victoria i think. He said that he barely came to school. Which makes sense he was toruing and practicing. I just wanna get my guitar signed its like having it blessed
Are you wondering why he has guitar like this and not some super-modern-great brand new guitar ? because it's very old guitar...God made it when he was young and when he met Tommy he just donated it to him saying: ....(you know what :))
@Bigpineapple: He can't? Yay, if someone asks why I haven't bothered to learn to read sheet music, I'll just tell them that Tommy Emmanuel can't do it either XD
nice thing about the guitar is that it looks decades old, but I remember him saying in an interview that it was 'only' 5 years old. Wood ages fast in Tommy's hands
@Ccbroo No Im pretty sure that the guitar looks close to what it did when it was made, save the writing on it. That guitar is made of a special wood and you can only get them in australia
hes one of those (the only one in my mind) that deserves all the money he makes- he is a humble man and does not brag about his talents and he inspires so many, young and old to play an instrument.
It's amazing how people argue that Rock guitarists are some of the greatest in the world, but when you really dig deep into to the guitar world you find hidden gems, I just recently found Tommy Emmanuel because I'm studying Classical guitar, I found him through Trace Bundy, They are both amazing and better than any rock guitarist out there today.
@TavalusDruid Be careful about what you say regarding rock guitarists - they are people, too. Tommy Emmanuel is one of the most amazing players ever, no question. But rock players should not be placed in a category which is subordinate to players like Emmanuel. They have their place as does Emmanuel and can amaze and inspire just as readily, regardless of their abilities. Hendrix I am certain would have been amazed and inspired by Emmanuel but does that make him any less of a player?
@beeroosterm You misunderstand me, yes rock guitarists are indeed in a class of amazing guitarists but for different reasons. I'm just saying if a rock guitarist came out on stage and performed a show without a band it would get really boring. Solo guitarist can hold a crowd's interest by themselves which is why I class them above most rock guitarists.
When you say this, I take it that you've seen TE play LIVE? Don't get me wrong, because I am a big fan of rock and have a lot of guitarists in mind (within that genre) that I pay homage to, doesn't mean that I don't recognize their genius. But hear me on this, following are a few "legends" that think Tommy Emmanuel is without equal on the acoustic: Les Paul, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Chet Atkins (okay, he's not R&R). The fact of the matter is, he's nothing short of a wizard.
@jmatthewsims He is indeed a wizard. My only point was your statement that Emmanuel was "better than any rock player out there today". There are many great rock players out there. My favorite is Steve Morse, who is a stunning player, composer, and all around nice fellow.
@dylanlawless1 Actually, his guitars weren't that old. They were custom made with less finish as they could be. Some of them looked just like this, but were only 2-3 years old.
@kapooktu thats interesting, it makes sense though that less finish would allow more vibration for a nicer sound. Great tones from it, even when not miked up
tommy is one of the best acoustic players nowerdays, and electric nowerdays i think still is clapton or bonamassa ( or something XD) but the best electric players ever are still hendrix, srv, buddy guy, rory gallagher etc

Skill doesn't make him the best, but the fact that he shares his joy with us through his guitar playing makes him deserved to be one of the best.
Forget about sung ha, he is just another victim of parents who forced their children to have a talent by give him guitar from a very young age. The result? A boy with an insane guitar skill but unable to share it to audience.
@alveench i agree, dont get me wrong he is crazy when it comes to guitar, i meen he could probably out do most guitarist, but i swear on my testicles, he could never create something that puts out feeling and joy like tommy,
@alveench I completely agree with that. Sungha Jung can play, but I can't enjoy his songs. There's a huge lack of joy from the kid himself and that's what disturbs me while listening to him. Tommy Emmanuel is a man that can entertain both himself and the audience in a very funny way :P
@alveench As much as I agree to what your saying to some extent, you can't just assume that he was forced to play by his parents. I mean, he even said he's playing the guitar because he enjoys it. He's just a 13 year old kid who's just shy and can't express his feelings well, because the maturity isn't there yet. Give him some time and he'll be great.
@PhotonMotion777 I just can't agree on people sayng Sungha doesn't feel his songs, , he's learning, and it takes a LOT of concentration, Tommy has been playing since forever and it's just natural to him, he could play with his eyes closed, but Sungha has to look at the neck everytime. I play fingerstyle songs, believe me, when you're playing, you don't even think about smiling or whatnot. both Tommy and Sungha are my inspiration, and Sungha smiles now. Just see him playing Antonio Banderas.
Don't get too excited about Maton guitars. I live in Australia and own a few. In the 70's they made great guitars but the quality is not what it was as they became more popular. Matons are good value for money but a Martin or Taylor blows them out of the water.
I believe that Tommy goes thru a lot of Matons. I also heard him say that he's given a lot of them away...probably for various charity auctions. I'd really like to try a Maton but the closest dealer is in New Hampshire.
You know you have something special when you can really feel the music, and this song is exactly that - just by the music you can imagine what the lyrics would be even though there are none.
I only I enjoyed anything half as much as he looks like he's enjoying that guitar. That is music. Whatever the complexity, its just sound, but when you soul and your own beating heart drive that song from beginning to end, then that is music. Tommy Emmanuel plays music, and reminds us of the distinction between sound and an outpouring of emotion. Thanks Tommy, still kicking myself for missing the concert I had the chance to see...
Just saw Tommy live last night in Montreal and I still have a big smile on my face. He opened the concert with Endless Road, this is the second time I have seen him live. The feeling and soul he puts in his music with his out of this world skills makes Tommy undoubtedly the best guitar player ever. Tommy is amazing and his live performance is unbelievable, what a gift.
this guy eats, breathes, drinks, and shits guitar, I bet. Today is the first day I've heard him. It's intimidating as hell, and makes me glad I'm alive. He's good.
tman is right. as he upstrokes close to the bridge, he does it slightly diagonally so the pick scrapes across the wound strings making that friction sound. I've been a guitar enthusiast my whole life and TE is one of the best players I've ever heard. It is a subjective topic but his style and control are undeniable.
@orangecolby1 style and control definately undeniable - I also like how easily you have put your point across; subjective topic indeed and I love him!!
I think that's the echoing of him upstroking some crazy TE chord close to the bridge. Either that or it's the sound of pure awesomeness rolling off his fingers.
I know there's so many people who could take this title, but i'm about ready to say in my own mind that Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest person to ever play the guitar.
undoutably the most skillful accoustic player ever, he doesnt play electric often enough to have that title, but if he did, theres no doubt he would have it too
i think tommy is better. the idea of music isnt to try and show off your skills by playing the most amazingly fast or fancy music, its about making sounds that are good. tommy makes sounds that are good, and just so happens that those sounds require great skill to produce
@Joeey re-read my comment dude. at least i said 'in my own mind'. I dont care if others have a different belief cause thats perfectly understood. and i know theres no way just one guitarist could be the 'best' so i didn't word it that way.
@VilleSkateKrewRep It's always dangerous to take this position, but I have to agree with you. And that's taking NOTHING away from all the other amazing guitar players. Tommy's got to be one of the most versitile. And he's an absolute virtuoso. It's effortless. It's pure joy expressed in music. Whether or not you agree he's the greatest, he is certainly one of the greatest that has ever picked up the instrument.
Man muß sich vor Augen halten, daß er auf einer ganz normalen Gitarre spielt, Wahnsinn!!

I know there's so many people who could take this title, but i'm about ready to say in my own mind that Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest person to ever play the guitar.

@VilleSkateKrewRep
On the acoustic guitar, easily.... yeah.
bungle0 2 years ago
Yeah, i thought about it a lot, he might even take the crown for all guitar for me. Definetely acoustic, though.
VilleSkateKrewRep 2 years ago
undoutably the most skillful accoustic player ever, he doesnt play electric often enough to have that title, but if he did, theres no doubt he would have it too

@paulio2293 dou you know about the guitar master abel carlevaro? what do you think of him?
gmansi 1 year ago
i think tommy is better. the idea of music isnt to try and show off your skills by playing the most amazingly fast or fancy music, its about making sounds that are good. tommy makes sounds that are good, and just so happens that those sounds require great skill to produce
paulio2293 1 year ago
"its about making sounds that are good"
yes it's true, but what is good or not is most of the times a personal feeling.
:)

@paulio2293 Tommy puts his heart into his music that is the difference and why his music is so good.

@VilleSkateKrewRep oh stop talking like a parrot. you insult a lot of great musicians when you go harpy about someone being the best, etc. etc.

@Joeey re-read my comment dude. at least i said 'in my own mind'. I dont care if others have a different belief cause thats perfectly understood. and i know theres no way just one guitarist could be the 'best' so i didn't word it that way.
VilleSkateKrewRep 1 year ago
@VilleSkateKrewRep okay I get it. no worries. thanks.
Joeey 1 year ago
@VilleSkateKrewRep It's always dangerous to take this position, but I have to agree with you. And that's taking NOTHING away from all the other amazing guitar players. Tommy's got to be one of the most versitile. And he's an absolute virtuoso. It's effortless. It's pure joy expressed in music. Whether or not you agree he's the greatest, he is certainly one of the greatest that has ever picked up the instrument.

Man, TE how do you do it? How do you have all that talent and still manage to be so humble?
tman916x 2 years ago 2
It is the humbleness that make that person so talented.
afauaticas3 2 years ago
EXACTLY!!!!
Just watch videos from the early 90´s of him. Who would wake up day after day and actually PRACTICE when you are soo incredible good.
But people always want to have everything wrapped up in a mystery and worship their hero.
As Zakir Hussain said once: He tries to be a good student everyday. I am sure TE has the same philosophy. Actually he says about the same thing.
