  • Bum Boy

  • Nobody's got a good word for you, but I have, "TWAT."

  • The best leader the Conservative party never had. How could the membership have elected Ian Duncan Smith and Michael Howard instead of such a popular and charismatic politician?

  • @Tyley61 If he didn't lose his seat in the 1997 election he more than likely would have been. The tories have been in a shambles as a party until recent times. After the 1992 election they had no direction whatsoever. Just look at their 1997 election campaign, it says it all really, and it went even worse from there.

  • Should have been leader, huge mistake to let him go.

  • I'd like to hear Portillo's commentary on this speech now.

  • Michael Porto loo

  • What a speech particularly the end. Shame there's no Mps like this anymore. Instead the countries full of politically correct, boring, uncharismatic idiots.

  • It's funny how Portillo 'suddenly' became a social liberal post-1997. Like Blair and Cameron, he's probably the careerist type who could've ended up in any party, but at least Portillo is genuinely intelligent and charismatic.

  • I can understand with the mood of the English people so dramatically against the Conservatives at the time, why people couldn't see past the arrogance and in a way smarminess of Portillo and this speech.

But if you look past that, you can see that he is actually a very charismatic, strong and defiantly patriotic man. And he is right in everything he says, it doesn't matter how what state our Armed Forces are in now because we will always win. This speech certainly stirs the patriot within me.

  • @dezboss He is not right in everything he says. He has a view of history that a 6 year old would find embarrassing. Real history is apparently about 'heroes' and 'good vs evil'. It becomes cringeworthy when he starts invoking the SAS.

  • idiotic toff

  • @chrisjoneschrisjones Not a toff actually, he rose from modest beginnings. You should take your prejudices elsewhere.

  • @usainlightning yes a toff and an ignorant prejudiced snob. And thats a fact

  • @chrisjoneschrisjones No it isn't, read up on his background

  • Comment removed

  • @usainlightning his prejudiced and ignorant patronising views on the 'insignificant' celtic countries are the views of an ignorant fool .there is no place in politics for these antiquated ignoramasus anymore

  • @usainlightning ah, the student room user!

  • @FadeToBlack888 I didn't realise i was famous

  • He would have been a good leader I think

  • what a brilliant speech i only wish their was a party today like the old conservatives

  • A truly dreadful speech. From what I hear he now deeply regrets making it!

  • What a fucking monkey. No wonder his political life ended in a gloriously terrible and shaming manner.

  • Now that's what i call- "Stand and Deliver"!!!!!!!!

  • The opening statement here, no Mike. That's the LibDems now. ;)

  • Cringe!!

  • He was a horrible little Tory boy back then...more likeable now...

  • Jesus.

All the hallmarks of a BNP speech,

At least Cameron has modernised the party.

  • I glad he went through that renaissance and come out on the other side more of a decent bloke, he would have won the tory leadership in 2001 if he hadn't entered the contest so early was seen as disrespectful to William Hague

  • I thought this was absolutly brilliant, great speech. Can someone tell me why people call it embarrasing, awkward and 'a disaster'. Portillo himself said this speech was the first thing he would change if he could erase part of his past. Why? I still think it's a great speech!

  • @gunseng2 He criticises the history lessons taught in text books in schools, now surely the government are responsible for what is taught in schools a government of which he is a member. Secondly he pretty much derides our European allies saying we stood firm whilst they fell to the dictator not going to go down well, and invoking the SAS motto for political purposes also pretty bad,

  • Hehe, well yeah, but still. The speech is great. And britain did stand firm whilst the rest of Europe fell to the dictators, I'm not even british but I can agree with that statement, it's just history. Criticising historyteaching is a bit weird, but the point is not to critize the teachings, it is to celebrate the nations great history, I think that's clear.

Concerning the SAS remark, I get that you shouldn't exploit it for political purpose, but he was the secretary of defence, boss of SAS.

  • @gunseng2 Apart from Chamberlain's (and Baldwin's) appeasement of Hitler throughout the '30s, and desperate attempts to avoid confrontation with him, even upon the invasion of Czechoslovakia, when Britain shamefully sold them down the river to the Nazis. And it took 2 days for Chamberlain to declare war after the invasion of Poland, as Chamberlain desperately tried to find a way out of it. Britain's history there isn't as gloroius as some would have you believe.

  • @gunseng2 Because it's jingoistic, nationalistic, cheap demogoguery. He says now he's ashamed of this speech, and rightly so.

  • @hugoegbert79 I know my history, and I know what britain did and did not do, so there's no need for such a basic historylesson. When looking back at the glory of british history, and the gratitude other countries and later generations should show to that legacy, you should look to the work of Churchill during WW2. History doesn't owe Chamberlain anything, but the resilience of the british government and people after Fall Gelb and in the hopeless situation during the blitz is remarkable.

  • So yes, this is nationalistic and it might also be cheap. But isn't it absolutly liberating to hear praise be given to those who deserves it in history, and the great legacy of the nations that ended nazism and fascism in Europe be given an homage. You should be able to appreciate your history for the great contributions the key people of yesterday has given to the world of today. You should be allowed to appeal even to the sense of nationalism when you do it right, like in this great speech.

  • Can hardly believe it's the same man who snuggles up to Diane "Jabba the Hut" Abbott on the sofa ever Thursday evening.

  • great speech

  • Apparently he now strongly regrets this "speech".

  • Typical self-hating homosexual in denial.

Blethering on about great war victories and the SAS in a desparate attempt to paper over the gaping psychological cracks in his personality. Just like many other Tories in that respect...

  • Yes maybe i shall you bloooooody renegade, hooligan, degenerate. aha ha haaaaaa.

  • @lbul6 I say i really have met a true "Portilloite" here. I say old bean have i ever met thee? i can judge a man very well through his virtual handshakes and your one was Portillo worthy. BLAAAAAAAADY! (scoff scoff scoff)

  • BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODY PORTILLO. what what! humdinger!

  • @lbul6 BLOODY WELL MET DEAR FELLOW. DO YOU WANT A PORTILLO HAND SHAKE?

  • Did Portillo like to w*nk off other men then?!!

God bless him, hope he enjoys sex with a woman one day though, otherwise he misses out!

  • And because he had homosexual experiences.. it is no reason why he should or shouldn't have been party leader.... the Daily Mail would tell you otherwise though.

  • I remember him very well in the mid-90's and he was a twat. Though it was a great night, in particular, his and Hamilton's defeats were worth sitting up until 5am to see.on 2nd May 1997. However, he changed after his defeat, and perhaps might have been a better leader in 2003 or 2005 for the Tories, but he quit politics and now has a media career, and appears to be much more likeable as a person as well.

  • I liked the speech and would vote for this man if I had the opportunity. The EU is just a capitalist, freedom destroying conspiracy of the rich to exploit the poor.

  • @PenisMcWhirtar - I wish the EU was a free market, capitalist model. Unfortunately, it is not. the EU is a state-led, collectivist model, which robs sovereignty.

  • @kealyc I agree that the EU is state-led and all about massive creating a massive, byzantine bureaucracy consisting of highly paid civil servants à la USSR. It's also about creating a surveillance society, collecting personal information and using it to control people. EU democracy is fake - the elected officials don't actually decide anything.

Big businesses hate truly free markets and that's why they invented and control the EU.

  • @PenisMcWhirtar WHAT... capitalist my ass.. its filled with commies.

  • @corruptionIsEvil You could be right, my friend. But look at China and the former Soviet Union. Is there such a difference? Greed and lust for power corrupts almost everyone.

  • What a c*nt.

    Knock Knock.. come on out

  • he shud b in the shadow cabinet as shud david davis. both wud b 10 times better than most of cameron's mates.

  • he will suddenly disappear from the public scene now since those allegations came out..

.....as if anyone believed his beard wife stories etc. in the first place..

  • Pardon, Have I missed something?.

  • I wish he would re-enter politics.

Whilst Cameron is fantastic (and our next PM, Portillo would be good serving as a leading minister again.

  • A poor queer ...

  • Ooh he's given me a hard-on...what is it with the Tories and repressed homosexuals - Portillo, Peter Lilley, Michael Gove...'come out, come out wherever you are...'

  • Homosexuals and paedofiles...all good friends of the one and only Peter Laud....parties with boys from children's homes in Wales...

  • What a great speech. Beats the hell out of anything Brown or Cameron have ever produced at a conference.

  • gordon brown is going to loose the next election because of this

  • This is the sort of REAL man the Tories need nowadays. Not a pink, wish washy, namby-pamby, soft, wet metrosexual like Cameron.

  • Couldn't agree more.

  • A homosexual and paedofile?

  • Creepy as hell. The revelations about his homosexuality ended his prospects in the eyes of the rabid Tory faithful.

Tebbit put the boot in by saying he was lying about the extent of his sexual "deviance".

People sometimes forget what a bunch of vicious and hypocritical moralisers they were.

  • John Major looks truly moved.

  • How many wars has the UK been involved in since Labour has been in office again? The Tories..the part of war? Or the party of homosexuals and paedofiles like Peter Laud?

  • the tories sure could use portillo today

  • If only you got those telephones installed..but more than likey your skeletons would of escaped alot earlier if that of happend

  • Portillo is much more likeable now he's out of politics, as he has edged away from him his very right wing position to a seemingly more centre right position.

  • Portillo and Mandelson are actually the same person. Can we get DNA sampling on them?

  • Comment removed

  • "We dare, we will win."

Got kicked out by a landslide 2 years later. Which seems to have made him realize what a crock of shite he was talking and has made him see sense.

  • great speech from a once great man, it is a shame how he has changed.

  • portillo has had a personality transplant since. the lion has become a daisy

  • go girl....

  • An absolutely remarkable, stirring speech. If only this man had not lost his nerve and fallen into the wishy washy flim flam mode of thought that he himself criticises in this speech. Portillo today is a shadow of the man he once was - something of a metaphor for Britain as a whole.

  • He's also a lover of man flesh!

  • thought it was a rubbish speech to be honest with you...lets not think critically blah blah blah...Portillo comes across as far more intelligent nowadays than he ever did here

  • what a load of bullshit - diane abbott please slap him!

  • If only they voted Portilllo leader of the Conservatives...

  • I'm no tory lover but portillo was and still is a great and charamatic man.

  • @juices389 Your joking -Right?

  • Comment removed

  • @juices389 exacly, you can still appreciate good politics. I'm no Labourite but I liked Gordon Brown.

  • @johnfox3 gordon brown, good politics? you really should be ashamed for such a comment

  • @juices389 - charismatic. Yes, he is.

  • So what about the foreigners who actually contribute to this country?

And did you know the BNP want to take away your right to vote if you don't serve in the forces? Not very democratic is it? The BNP are really just Labour with more extreme views. Why would I want another bullshit party after 12 years of this government?

  • Regardless of anyone's mainsteam poltical differences, we must oppose the BNP. They are a collection of fascist thugs, many of them criminals who seek to win over the disillusioned working class vote in this country with false rhetoric and lies.

  • Britain please

saw to these foolish Irish how easily you can wipe them out

  • Erm - soz to break you guys' lil chat

But WHOOOOOP! This vid should instill some patriotism in you - whether you're Socialist Or Capitalist - stop fighting? If youre British ...

  • 'Britain' has been slow to quarrel through its history?

Tell that to Wales, Ireland, Scotland, continental Europe, vast swathes of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Twat.

  • FinDeSiecle, that just shows how badly-informed you are! All those conflicts were started by others,Britain only invaded foreign nations, including those of Africa,to prevent our Great Power rivals, such as France, invading them, which would have been a much worse experience..ask the poor people of Cameroon, or Algeria, who had to put up with decades of French atrocities!!Britain has often been under attack, from the Spanish Armada, even Napoleon's Armies, but has often won anyway against all the odds!

  • What a total and utter Cunt. Embarrasing

ex-public school jingoistic xenophobic suppressed homosexual.

  • Oh dear, Cretter!

You sound like a real anal,sandal-wearing,tree-hugging muesli-munching Guardian-reading prat! "Jingoistic, xenopohobic" etc etc..can you possibly manage to squeeze any more silly left-wing terms of abuse, into that badly-written sentence??

Guardian-readers know about global warming, but dont tend to be that well-informed on,say, the EU,coz they only read one-sided Leftist propaganda! You really need to try reading something besides that anti-family,anti-British,pro-abortion rag

  • Why are "jingoistic" and "xenophobic" "silly left wing terms of abuse"?

"Badly written sentence"? This is from someone who uses "coz" in their writing.

Just because I disagree with you over the ignorant ramblings of a Tory has been why does that make me a "Guardian Reader"?

Why not leave Britain if it's so bad for you?

Try Alabama in the good ol USA - and take Richard Littlejohn with you, you loathsome, clueless, middle England Bedwetter.

    Silly Cunt.

  • i use "coz" as these boxes dont allow you to fit in enough words."jingoistic/"xenophobic" are the usual smears leftists direct at anyone who tries to have a sensible debate on immigration,or the EU,leftists cannot debate such isues,so they try to silence opposition with pathetic insults like "racist" "xenophobe" and "jingoist" hurled at anyone who disagrees with handing over our liberty to Brussels,or allowing massive, uncontrolled immigration into our country, without even consulting the people!

  • "handing over our liberty to Brussels"

    Ah yes, that old chestnut.

Presumably, then, your wholly against a totally unelected governing body making decisions which affect all of our lives then, right?

In that case, I'd be fascinated to hear your opinions on the relevance of the House of Lords.

Try the big picture for once, you Vagina.

  • Cretter that just shows how uninfmormed and stupid you are!The House Of Lords does not take decisions in secret, like the European Commission/Council, and the House Of Lords was set up precisely to PREVENT us being ruled by a dictatorship! The House Of Lords had a cross-party balance, unique in the rest of Europe, and it cant "make decisions", all it can do,is send laws back to the Commons for review, the Lords doesnt have the power to pass Bills, only to ask the Commons to review them !

  • Yes, unique in Europe because it's totally unelected by the people you fuckwit. By the very nature of it's power to send bills back to the commons, it has the ability to effectively veto potential laws which consequently would affect all of us.

Looking up "House of Lords" on Wikkipedia doesn't make you the leading authority on Britains parliamentary history you arse.

If the Westminster model is so wonderful, why has every emerging democracy chosen to reject it? Rule Britania!

  • The House Of Lords has achieved a cross-Party balance, unique in Europe, precisely because an elected House couldnt achieve that balance, you twat!If you have an elected House, one Party has to have a Majority, over the other,so one Party always controls the House, dont you get it?The Lords is independent of the state,so it has saved us from many draconian Government Bills, like 90-day detention! It cant veto laws,it asks Parliament to reconsider, which is a vital restraint on the power of the state!

  • Anti-Family ? There is an entire section in the Saturday edition of the Guardian entitled "Family" you tory turd poker.

  • The Guardian are anti-family, because they constantly atack, undermine and promote alternative lifestyles to, marriage, which is the strongest, most stable and long-lasting family unit for children. You clueless left-wing moron!

  • Yes of course, sorry, I forgot the statistical success rate of this "long lasting famly unit".

Are you a member of the famous five?

  • you have revealed yourself to be ignorant! The"statistical success rate" which you jeeringly referred to,actually recently PROVED marriage is the strongest, longest-lasting family unit! if you had a clue what you were talking about. The British Government figures showed "alternative lifestyles" have a far higher break-up rate, than married couples,42% of cohabiting couples with children had separated by the time their child was five, but just 12% of married couples had separated at the same age!!

  • "53 per cent of all divorces tend to occur in marriages lasting between 10 and 15 years with a further 40 per cent ending earlier, between five and 10 years" Very long lasting. As for alternate lifestyles - Kindly tell us all how people choosing to live differently to a married couple within the confines of the law has ANYTHING to fucking do with the likes of you.

  • You didnt answer the statistics I provided! The statistics did not prove marriage always lasts, you clown, they proved marriage lasts LONGER than ANY other type of relationship, including cohabitation!(42% of cohabiting couples have already split when their children are 5,only 12% of married couples have split up,at the same age)What it has to do with me, is that children are badly affected by the breakup of stable family homes, and statistics show married couples are more stable families

  • Your statistics?? Why do you choose to believe them. You admit you got them from the government which you hate with a passion. If you trust these statistics, what else are the government saying? Surely being left wing they must be wrong? Also,I didn't ask you about "the breakup of stable family homes" - I asked you to explain how "people choosing to live differently to a married couple within the confines of the law has ANYTHING to fucking do with the likes of you" Answer the question, you tool.

  • The statistics didnt come from the Government the Government got them from the children's register, which lists the marital status of all parents in the country, and the statistics were also included in the Tory Party's Social Policy Study by Iain Duncan Smith! The "breakup of stable family homes" answers your question! It is because I dont want to see more children without fathers, that I want to see less unmarried people having children!

  • my goodness what on earth happend to the tory party? That man is magnificent!!!! Why are the tories of today such a shower and the mirror image of Labour? A man like that should be PM not a sycophantic little worm like Cameron.

  • Are you not pulling our leg's a bit, Roger?

  • "That man is magnificent!!!"

Even Portillo, when asked about this exercise in pomposity, regrets having ever delivered it. Either you're taking the piss, or you're arguably the stupidest man in Britain.

  • Brilliant speech by a 100% HETEROSEXUAL straight hard man.

  • That's a rather amusing remark and I thank you for it.

  • Great Speech shame he wasn't able to become Prime Minister

  • If you think that is what constitutes a great speech, then I suggest you stay in your room and interfere with yourself over back issues of the Daily Mail, you utterly clueless middle England Bedwetter. Thank god people with views like yours are all getting too old to make a difference.

  • Cretter I am a young person at University, and the Daily Mail has a higher readership than most other papers! most people actually agree with my views, which is why all the polls show Labour are hated around the country, its so bad that people would even prefer the useless Cameron, to the bunch of wreckers in charge of our country now! and all polls, including the Guardian's ICM show most people AGREE with me and want reduced immigration/taxes, and toughness on crime, and a new education system!

  • Because Portillo realises what a prick he was in this speech, we need him back! Lets stop the cult of youth!

  • Great speech, what does it have to do with politics? That speech could have been made by a politician of ANY persuasion!

  • Good Lord....

  • WTF those aren't my words above, I think Portillo is the King of Smarm, someone musta hacked my account.

Anyone know how to check all posts?

  • That was a really good speech. What went wrong?

    McCain 08.

  • What went wrong? What went wrong is your thinking ,you Donkeys Cock.

  • Stop your scumming you silly little cunt.

  • Ahh, I see the problem; your perhaps confusing me with someone who gives a fuck what you think, you posturing cock end.

By the way, did you enjoy seeing your cadavarous right wing muppet of a candidate destroyed by Obama last night ?????

I'm certain most right thinking people around the globe did.

    Taxi for Richard.

  • Did we enjoy seeing the useless, radical left-winger Obama win? No, but the stupid Americans will wake up and regret it one day. Obama, like most stupid socilists thinks he can spend his way out of recession, so he wants the US to INCREASE its levels of tax and spending at a time when their economy is in jeopardy! And Obama tries to hide the fact he has been closely tied for the last 20 years to radical,Marxist, segregationist, anti-American Church figures like Jeremiah Wright!

  • I guess I touched a nerve there........Is Obama a socialist?? You mean he wants to create a society where the needs of the vast majority of us are prioritised just once over the interests of a tiny minority of obscenely rich people who are responsible for putting our "economy in jeapordy" as you say.

    No.........I won't have it.

  • "Obama tries to hide the fact he has been closely tied for the last 20 years to radical,Marxist, segregationist, anti-American Church figures like Jeremiah Wright!"

That HAS to be FOX News talking.

Time for bed now - don't forget to soil yourself.

  • OK Cretter you ignorant fool, try reading about Jeremiah Wright, and Bill Ayers connections to Obama, Obama ADMITTED live on-air that Wright personally married him, baptised his daughter, and he donated to Wright's Church and Wright has been his close friend for 20 years! Yet he now denies that he knew Jeremiah has attacked white people, and told his black congregation not to join the "middle class" because they will become part of "white culture",and has called America "evil"!

  • Personally, I can handle what he said. In fact I don't think calling America evil is even in the same league as having a potential vice President that says she understands foreign policy because she can see Russia from her home state! Please, please share your views on Sarah Palin with us. I just can't wait.

  • Well, Obama obviously disagrees with you, because he has become very embarassed about his connections, since being exposed, and has now disowned Jeremiah Wright, and denied knowing about his public views! Read everything Jeremiah Wright, and Ayers have said, including their racist quotes! Sarah Palin? I think she's an idiot!

  • Of course you do. There really is no other word for it now is there? Speaks volumes about, not only your choice for a future President, his appaling judgement and disgusting camapaign tactics but the republican party and right wingers generally.

Enjoy the political wilderness for the next eight years, at the very least. Your views belong in the last fucking century. Get used to it.

John McCain 08 - The voice of Alzheimers.

  • His choice of running mate was clearly the mark of a genius of political strategy. Let's face it, he's a war hero so he MUST be right. Personally, I'm still trying to figure out what a "hockey mom" is. Did anyone with an IQ above their shoe size actually vote for these two clowns?

    Good grief.

  • No,socialism increases state power, forceably takes money from those who have earned it,and gives it to those who havent! It creates a perverse incentive, for example Obama's plan to increase corporate taxation, would DETER big companies from investing in the US, where they would generate employment! Ireland has just a 12% corporate tax rate, which is why everyone invests in Ireland, and their employment/economy has been booming! But then you, like most leftists, dont have a clue about economics1

  • So you'll be leaving then I take it?

  • Tell me something - Why is it, now and throughout history that the overwhelming majority of Philosophers, Writers, Actors, Artists, Thinkers, Musicians, Poets, University Lecturers, Teachers, Playwrights, Populist leaders, Comedians, Social Commentators, and most creative, intelligent human beings held in high regard by the majority are always politically left wing and economists are generally right wing ? Kind of makes your lot look like a shower of cunts, really, doesn't it ?????!!!!!!!!!!

  • George Macdonald Fraser?? One of our best writers???

    HAHAHAHA

Writing a series of sub standard novels through the eyes of a bullying ex-public school arsehole, previously invented by another author.

    Magnificent!

  • Yea...except even great left-wing writers like Christopher Hitchens,Harold Pinter, and loads of top authors have named Macdonald Fraser's Flashman novels some of the greatest of the last 60 years! You really are clueless if you dont know how much George Macdonald Fraser's books are praised by the literary elite, including left-wing authors! I could run through a long list of great conservative poets, writers and thinkers, from Marlowe and Wordsworth,to classic childrens authors like CS Lewis

  • Possibly the most ridiculous speech made by a member of the British Cabinet in the last twenty five years.

  • zx80user what was ridiculous about the speech? it was a little exagerated, in its rhetoric, and it sounded unconvincing in places, but the essence of what he said was correct, children ARE taught "politically-correct rubbish" instead of history, which robs them of national pride, its a pity there isnt a politician who will tell the truth about our country any more

  • Thta was very irresponsible

  • LOL - bloody tories!

Good riddance. Finally in 1997 the UK realised it was time to tell Tories "don't mess with Britain get stuffed".

Good riddance and here's to Labour winning a

4th term to keep these idiots out!

  • I don't think that will happen

  • yes wolverhampton1 thats just what we need! Lets vote Labour, and get another five years of dreadful schools, sky-high taxes, useless police, interfering state laws against everything, uncontrolled immigration, and colossal waste of taxpayers money each year, dont we just need another 5years of that..you fuckin retard!

  • Your the retard, White Van Man. Try reading a newspaper that contains some news, instead of the right wing red tops. Your little rant sounds like classic Daily Mail, middle England bedwetter territory to me. Fuckwit.

  • Cretter you are embarassing yourself, sign out of Youtube, and at least save some face!!

I didnt get that information from newspapers, I got it from living, and working in a Labour-run country with sky-high taxes, absolutely dreadful, failed comprehensive schools (only grammar schools can restore real educational standards) unncontrolled immigration, a bloated public sector, and a pathetic criminal justice system!

  • If it's that bad then leave, you simian oaf.

  • Labour's answer: don't like it run like the soviet union, leave.

nah, Tories had their problems and misjudged the public once or twice (poll tax, etc) but theyre all about Britain, however they come across. Labour is all about some new, foreign regime change to try and unroot our 'ways' to move up 'forward'. Never to be trusted.

  • Comment removed

  • @hooverdamman So are the Tories all about some new, foreign regime change - only UKIP are for Britain.

  • @hooverdamman

And yet it was the Tory government under Ted Heath who got us into the EEC.

  • @hooverdamman Because it's not like the Tories went into any countries to fight wars now is it?

  • Had to search for this after him saying in an interview today in The Guardian supplement that if he could edit any part of his history this would be it.

He was so slimy back then I agree, almost unrecognisable to the laid back man we see joking on This Week.

  • Same guy with desired avenue closed......Now just a media whore of the worst type.remember he was just 1 vote short on the leadership election. If anything,he confesses to a fake life; a chameleon - married but gay ; labour youth but conservative minister ; and now denouncing his mature past. Weak and annoying.

  • No he was eliminated by 1 vote on the penultimate round. Everyone has their own opinion but it's my belief that if he'd made it to the last two the members would have rejected him because of his wishy washy, ditch anything, say anything to be elected Blairite approach.

  • i disagree, i think his point about history in British schools is utterly fantastic, and i should know, i've been learning about the rubbish French, British and Italian domestic policies for the last 2 years

  • I don't disagree with the essence of what he is saying here - politically I'm a definite blue - but this is almost like a parody of a conservative speech, and comes off very badly.

Back then he rather reveled in this sort of stuff, and it earned him the love of the party's right but the intense dislike of practically everyone else.

  • "I don't disagree with the essence of what he is saying here"

I see. Well, clearly then, you sir, are a total fucking idiot.

  • Why only the Right? I think this sort of stuff goes down well with most Tories. Having said that, there are a lot of tories in the party that are probably more Lib Dem than Tory.

  • He laid it on a little thick there, but since leaving government he's calmed down quite a bit. I quite like him now & wish that he'd stayed in politics.

  • Which party was in power when we signed up to the Common Market? Answers on a postcard please.
