  • I know this is not related to this video, but... Is me or the rebrith version sounds like a Genesis, using the sound set used on most of the Treasure games?

  • @MacWii - The Gradius Rebirth version is made as though it was running on the same arcade board as Gradius III, which uses a Yamaha YM2151 and a Konami K007232 sound chip to produce music and sound effects. While the Genesis could theoretically make similar music using its Yamaha YM2612 sound chip, the sampled parts of the song would need to be made using the Sega CD or 32X because they would not work very well using the YM2612 single sampled sound channel.

  • @Ace9921 I might have a bad ear tho, but the remastered version actually uses 4 to 6 FM channels, 2 (out of 3, comparing always to the MD) PSG Channels and 6 different samples, meaning, that while the music will be completely rendered, the sound FX will not be able to be done in 1/2 FM Channels and 1 PSG channel

  • @MacWii - The Gradius III uses no PSG whatsoever, while the MegaDrive does. The MegaDrive's sound channels are these: 6 FM, 3 PSG with White Noise, 1 PCM(which reduces the FM count to 5). Gradius III, on the other hand, has 8 FM channels and 2 PCM channels. This is taken exactly from the hardware specs: MegaDrive's Yamaha YM2612/Texas Instruments SN76489 combo and Gradius III's Yamaha YM2151/Konami K007232 combo. There's a fair bit of difference between the two.

  • @Ace9921 yes, but as i said, THE MUSIC could be ported perfectly, i don't hear the GIII version using all the 10 channels, even that, you could "stick" 2 channels in one channel (really old trick from the C64 days, and those channels must be compatible between them (IE, waveform and timing) tho actually is making another noise between the spaces left behind on another channel), even if is ported perfectly, it may not be a 100% accurate representation of the original...

  • @MacWii and it may be a "inferior quality" version, compared to the NES version (which does not imply that a GR-like version on the MD can be better than the NES version) also, the FX would not work due to channel limitations (ran out of channels)

Is also funny how they chose the arcade version over the SNES version... The SPC chip is considered today as one of the best synthesizers of all time

  • yeah! my brother MAXXEXTERMINATION like this song

  • I also just recently uploaded the Gradius Rebirth version of Heavy Blow. Let him know I have both versions up on my channel.

  • YESSSS! I've been waiting for this! I guess now would be a good time to tell you that I'm Brain Golem on the forum, but you probably already guessed...

  • You already told me you were Brain Golem from GameStone.

Aaaaannnd.... if you wait a little more, I'll have the Gradius Rebirth version of Heavy Blow uploaded sometime this afternoon.
