  • then the trumpet player comes in and is like "this is how you let music breathe"

  • Like seriously; the sax solo starts at crazy and just coasts at maximum intensity the entire time.

  • is anyone listen this piano player comp? awesome haha

  • legendary drum solo

  • He was limitless behind the kit the world truly lost a gentleman and an Unmatched unique approach to drumming even in his later yrs he was amazing RIP KING LOUIE Buddy Rich and Krupa knew There match with You as a force and inspiration to even them

  • what a great drummer wow

  • @MrKMdrummer He was a wonderful man, as well.

  • JUST INCREDIBLE!!!!

  • That tune is called "Berne, Baby, Berne" with -e ;) I own the CD, great concert that time at the jazz festival, stunning solo!

  • So here we go....

  • first chair....ill say.

  • The greatest Big Band Drummers in the history of the Art form:

    Chick Webb

    Jo Jones

    Buddy Rich

    Louie Bellson

    Davey Tough

  • TRAVIS BARKER!

  • @11:12

craziest stuff ive seen in a while. woah

  • thats some tasty playing from a true legend...well done Louie ...you are missed

and that kit sounds fricken fantastic....:-)

  • thats some tasty playing from a true legend...well done Louie ...you are missed

  • My favorite drummer of all time. I can't find a drummer out there with more tone and that plays with such grove and swing. Thank you Mr. Bellson for enriching the drumming world with your amazing talent.

  • I do find it depressing that almost every Louise Bellson video I've visited has a comment thread where a 'certain contemporary drummer' of Louie's is mentioned in about half of all the comments. Why can't people appreciate Louis for the great drummer and musician that he is without constantly comparing him to you know who???

    :-o

  • when he hit that hihat ;goosebumps!

    the velvet touch...

  • Louiee we will never forget your drumming, your musicianship and above all the person and friend you were..... Walfredo Reyesr

  • great....

  • Well boys, what do you want me to say? I don't think Buddy is better than Louie or Louie better than Buddy...but I think, after listening to both of them for hours, that I prefer Louie. It's just an opinion...

  • Ahí tienen el doble bombo del que tanto se ufanaban los rockeros...Louie lo usó ¿cuánto? ¿20 años antes? Y mucho mejor, desde luego...

  • The real star on this set is the fantastic Mr. Don Menza. Holy cow..what a solo !

  • Sax player is the great Don Menza. He was quoted as saying that his son made more money on 1 tour than he made his entire career. His son is Nick Menza, drummer for MegaDeath.

Duke Ellington said Louie Bellson was not only the greatest drummer in the world but the greatest musician. Many don't realize Louie wrote about 2,500 tunes for big band and about 1,500 for small group. That would be about 4,000 that Louie wrote and arranged. That dwarfs the fact that he invented the double bass drum set

  • technique out the ass...

  • during sax solo, guy in back looks like he hates the whole thing

  • @alfinut that sax solo is impressive... it doesn't breathe enough I think. Very frantic.

  • I thought there was only one drumming deity (Buddy Rich). I was wrong; there are two!

  • @castlehilldude Check out Gene Krupa

  • @castlehilldude There are many others who were inspired by Buddy. Bellson, Shaughnessy, Peart, and then Mike Portnoy was inspired by Peart. All of those people were deity's.

  • Man that trumpet looks hard to blow on. Thought dudes head was gonna pop off like a firework. The other winds seem easier physically than the trumpet. Maybe Tuba is hard or french horn. Is it the reed dealio?

  • Sax player is pretty sick imo.

  • great performance : ]

  • And: hell yeah, Don Menza was and is a stunning tsax-player! Also listen to his soli at Buddy Rich´s Mercy, Mercy, Mercy album!!!!

  • 1. This song correctly is called "Berne, Baby, Berne" (this was a jazz festival in Berne, Switzerland)

    2. Count Basie always called Louie "my first chair percussionist", therefore.. :)

  • nooooooooooooooo wtf that better had been the end of the solo because it seemed like he was about to explode, if its not the end im gonna be searching for a long ass time for it

  • im a musical i like a lot of music but jazz is the one that talks that tells a story this guy is amazing a nine minute solo that was just him and the drum no one esle thats beautiful

  • A beautiful thing!

  • Swingin

  • Man I just love when he says this really cool and easy 'hop' at 11:09 and pulls of the sickest cymbalroll ever! Awesome drummer!

  • Never was a Bellson fan and his double bass work is erratic and pretty sloppy. Still It's cool to see these big swing bands play.

  • That sax solo was amazing!

  • my great great uncle was a beast on the drums hands down... a musical genius jus wish i could heard him in person...

  • Don Menza was cookin" hot and diggin' deep !!!! terrific support from Keter Betts!

  • buddy rich is better

  • Comment removed

  • Check out the wicked stink eye the trumpet player is giving the sax player @ 3:00.........it lasts till 4:40!!!

    A buck forty stink eye.

    Louie shreds

  • All these cats are totally smoking. It's like driving 90 in a 35 speed zone. Hank, keter and Louis totally in sync.

  • So tiresome that the comment thread is full of 'Buddy is Best' comments. Frankly, the youtubers who go around Krupa & Bellson videos typing these comments are no better than those who keep posting up "Travis Barker would blow him off the stage!" comments. They just have an older super-hero.

I'm not criticising Buddy, he was great, but some of his 'Buddy will always be the greatest' brigade are just so ***ing annoying! :-(

This is a Louis Bellson video - let's here it for Louis!

  • was he the first to play double bass?

  • @jp3515 Yes, him and Ray McKinley. According to Louie, each one said the other was the first. Who was actually the very first one I'm not sure, but it was either Ray or Louie.

  • @jp3515

He doesn't "play" double bass. He alternates, which is what pretty much all drummers do in solos.

  • The thing is that many are suggesting that Louis was either just as good or better than Buddy Rich but how are you figuring that. Louis mostly did just open solos instead of playing musicaly and soloing over the form. Buddy was not only able to play faster and just cleaner but you could actually keep time to most of his solos (except when he did the slow down and speed up roll). Buddy was more of a virtuoso for sure.

  • rest in piece..

    you were the best

  • Loved the smile on his face, near the end. Real joy. Also, notice some of the musicians in the background, watching. Great video.

  • for me, after BUDDY RICH , LOUIE BELLSON is the greates drummer ever lived !!!

  • holy shit! that dude on sax is killer! bellson is the quintessential drummer of all time!

  • I don't know why louie isn't considered the World's Greatest Drummer. His speed and technique were just as good as buddy's, he was a much nicer guy and he invented the two bass drums

  • I agree. Louis has amazing style and techniques, but I don't know if drumming would be what it is today if Buddy wasn't around.

  • We Miss you Louie. You were the best. Rest in peace.

  • Greatest !!!

  • Woooooooooooo!

  • watching this for louie but the saxophonist is truly amazing

  • What I find interesting about this is that all of these guys are wearing tuxedos. Talk about hot. And under all those lights. If we could all be that good of showmen(folks).

  • Absolutely superb!

Louie was a total musician, great soloist, great vituoso, great accompanyinst, great band leader, great writer, great guy.

    IMHO, he is the master.

  • goose pimples man. louie bellson you are the quintessential drummer!

  • who is the guy on sax? holy shit man!

  • Don Menza is on tenor. He played not only with Bellson but with Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich. Awsome chops!

  • The band is really great here.......And louie is the best he can be.......

  • esos viejitos tocan bien padre

  • Louie is so patient, creative, expressive and abstract with his solos. A master of the art of drumming. The drumming/jazz world will forever miss this guy.

  • With this gold/chrome kit, I always thought that he had the most beautiful looking drums. They were so shiny. His cymbals too were incredible looking. It didn't hurt that he played them with such grace. Buddy had the fire....Louis had the grace.

  • @drummer78 fire and grace.exc!

  • Got to see Louie live once and it was amazing. Then I got to talk to him for a few minutes. The NICEST musician I have ever met, bar none.

  • P.S. At intermission, he mentioned his loving wife, Pearl Bailey, and said Buddy was the most amazing/best drummer he had ever seen, (u can draw you own conclusions).

Technically he had all the skills, & then some. Another solo he did set all his cymbals a blaze, and that's all u heard. It was simply incredible to hear it in person.

  • "Bellson vs. Buddy" was billed in Philly at Robin Hood Dell in Philly in early 70s. Bellson told the audience that Buddy got sick and couldn't make it that nite. Instead, Bellson put on a thrilling show. He did blazing/buzz single/double combo roll solo. Both hands were a blur for nearly 5 minutes straight!!!

  • Seeing Louie in a small ensemble like this is unbelievable- I had the pleasure of knowing Jerry Winner, a gentleman who played clarinet in a similar group with Louie, along with Oscar Pettiford, Lou Levy, Terry Gibbs, and Charlie Shavers. Jerry always said he was "terrified" of playing with such outstanding musicians.

Louie Bellson was the best man at Jerry's wedding, and Jerry told me point-blank that Louie was perhaps the nicest guy he knew.

  • jazz drummers have better tone than rock drummers

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight yeah, accept for the kick drum. I like that big boomy sound of a modern stadium show myself

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight Jazz is a lot different than Rock, See the heavy side as well

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight first of all i enjoy jazz more than rock, but there is no need to compete with music styles, music is supposed to bring us together so we can enjoy each others minds through sound

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight because jazz is about tone and musicality and rock is about keeping a backbeat or just being brutal....

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight

Very true... Its because they jazz boys have been taught properly and have been shown the correct techniques in order to do so! When I turned up at my first lesson with my teacher 2 years ago (this is after 10 years of playing and a BA hons degree in the subject) he said to me "Its like you're banging dustbin lids"... Now its a different story! :D

  • remarcable tecnique... what an artist... (sorry for my english)

  • Everyone who believes music is a contest, raise your hands. Good! I wanted to know who to eliminate from the ranks of the musically relevant. I doubt Louis would have fallen for this.

  • Seen him in the late 60's in Berkley at a workshop at one of the music stores.

    Awsome drummer.....

  • Classy. Mr. Bellson had all the refined drum knowledge that big band drummers had in the past, but he had a way tasteful of playing without overplaying. Mr. Bellson was one of the greats.

  • IMHO...Nobody and I mean Nobody

is as 'smoooooth and talented' as Louis,

Watch him again and listen to all the facets of the mans style... True, Buddy was more of an in your face (maybe a bit too much) type of drummer, but really, LB....The master.. and one has or has had the Total understanding of percussive techniques as he..... Just my opinion..

  • haha true that, some buddy fans are just a LITTLE to uptight.

  • @danzbmw i agree 100%, buddy was definately better and faster but louis just had this smoothness and tone to him, its like heaven.

  • @danzbmw Well said.... thanks for putting into words what I couldn't.... L.B. was in his own class

  • @danzbmw i agree he is so much more tasteful and classy in his playing than buddy.

  • @danzbmw I agree. I always considered LB the most technical drummer. His technique was efortless and his "touch" was so musical...

  • Where can i find this on CD? Amazing

  • The Three Amigo`s Louie-Buddy-Krupa. The best of the best.

  • LB was my first drum teachers teacher... RIP LB... wish I could have seen you live. What a player.

  • hahahahaha

  • and the rest of this video clip is where please? It stopped on his legendary single stroke roll.

  • His right hand groove, no finner. I am about the music, show does not record, but he is fun to watch. He always looks like he is having a blast, especially his early stuff from the 40's.

    RIP LB, Feb 2009

  • clearly your not a drummer because this guy is legendary and has so much more chops than travis. travis has no chops.

  • Louie is MADE of chop. It's impossible to tell where the chops end and the man begins.

Also, for all you people who think double bass is the shit... You're listening to the inventor of the thing.

  • seriously, you dont have to be faster to be a better drummer.

  • Did the man even break a sweat?Buddy had flash, but Krupa and Belson they had style,no one can touch them, they are missed.

  • There is no denying all three Rich, Krupa and Bellson where tops, musicality, technique, innovation in drumming from their peaks, really till they passed. I think Buddy Rich was more well known for his personality off stage. But I agree Krupa and Bellson where smooth and had style. I would add Joe Morello. Of course there are many more, Art Blakey, Max Roach and on. Contemporaries, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Tony Williams would make my list (forgetting a bunch).

  • Louis, Buddy and Gene, all one of a kind

  • Hay wait!!! Those are Killer horn players too! Great solos.

  • They don't make drummers like this anymore.

  • Thank you, Maestro Belassoni.

    RIP

  • genius.

  • I've been looking at this closely...It looks to me like Louie has some pretty serious scars from a burn on his left hand...anyone know if this is in fact the case?

  • Surgery scars from nerve problems from slamming for 60 years.

  • The only drummer to surpass Buddy Rich, astonishing.

  • I Agree. I actually had the wonderful Privilege to meet Louis Bellson in 1994.

I walked up to him and he shook my hand and I was just in awe of meeting this legend that I could hardly say anything to him LOL...So he struck up a conversation with me about drumming and we ended up talking for about 3 minutes. It was a very unique experience that I will never forget getting to meet this great legend and have an actual detailed conversation with him...Totaly Awesome.

  • Louis B. is phenomenal, but surpassing Buddy? I don't believe so. def. ahead of Krupa, but not Buddy

  • Louis Bellson takes back seat to no drummer!

  • 18 min well spent

  • Don Menza is incredible!

  • Bombastic in a big band setting

    sensitive in a smaller ensemble

    Tight as hell always

    what couldn`t louie do?

  • The drums are REMO...but is the less important, watch carefully his performance!...Simply wonderfull.

  • God..... I wish Louie was playing Rogers Drums

  • k guapa la improvisacion de saxo

  • probably Burn, right?

  • JazzVideoGuy: You never let us,down. Keep the great video's coming,,,"We are watchingyou. when you come to baltimore." Look me up."

  • I hadn't heard about the demise of Louie Bellson! Thank-you for such a phenomenal piece. I had met Louie a few times, great drummer, great human being!

  • Near 70 years young here.. Look him go on the hi-hat. Just awesome.

  • Wow! What a treat to watch! And, of course, Louie was at or near 70 here - not a bad chunk of work at that age. He will remain one of the true giants on drums. What a talent - I miss him already....

  • Louie Bellson is one of the great drummers of all time!

Fantastic line-up. All these cats are great, of course.

I can always count on you JazzVideoGuy to deliver

    the goods.

    Peace — Soulnik
