thanks so much for your comments and for "taking me to school" on my rhythm. I was actually coached by Ms. Leon on these pieces and am playing them according to her specifications. In fact she wants me to record Tumbao. But hours of drumming, listening to Afro-Cuban music and dancing could never hurt. It would be a blast for me!

Ms. Simmons is so beautiful -- inside and out -- and a VERY talented pianist! In this piece, as well as Tumbao, she completely misses the Afro-Cuban polyrhythms that are written into the music. She plays this music too rhythmically in a Western sense. If I were coaching Ms. Simmons I would have her listen to hours of guaguanco, guaracha, son, danzón, etc., and THEN I would teach her to DANCE this music so she could feel it in her bones. Then, León's music would ring for Ms. Simmons.
