  • Sounds great! I would love to hear some feedback from everyone on my own guitar videos. Thanks for the support!

    -Cat

  • Is that Rhod Stuart?

  • Awesome man! I used to catch you at the Studio Cafe back in my bachelor days, lol. You're still awesome! Just bought your book off Amazon too. I'll use it to help teach my daughters.

  • Excelent!

Next time stand up to play the Blues.

  • one of the vids that definitely inspired me to buy a guitar and learn how to play blues. i wish there was a school course for guitar.. hope it doesnt end up like my drumset sitten in the corner. procrastination curse you!

  • Listen to the music that inspires. Whatever makes you feel better about yourself and life is the direction to go in.

Beginning and intermediate players can have just as much fun as a seasoned pro. It's just an attitude that separates us all. Good luck with your study.

  • @johnhguitar thank you. so i got the same style guitar as that one in epiphone dot black. 2 things, i didnt realize guitars specially these ones are heavy, and my four fingers are purple and very tender. i love it tho, learned bits of song tweezer by phish and next to learn is "first tube". prior to that i been trying to jam with your video doing 4 note solo 8&10fret 1st and second string and also copying your slides bending the wires and stuff, haha its been fun but my fingers hurt.

  • Has your guitar been set up and what gauge strings do you use? Try a low action and light gauge strings perhaps 9s or 10s.

  • @ohkfilms

yeh what johnguitar said... i've been playing the bass for 7 years now... i first started to play rock/metal and after the years went by and i got better and better i got more interested in more music types... now from just beeing an hardcore rocker as i was i play mosly all from Blues and jazz... its just that you have to get yerself in to it but then... drums? man.... (we bassplayers have lots againt them :P)

  • Love it, guy.

  • absolutly pitch perfect bends!

  • Great!

  • what's with this guy's litttle hat

  • I tried to hide the goofy looking granny headphones!!!

  • what's with this guy's litttle hat

  • John, just saw your videos last night, wow what a great player you are. Great phrasing and great lessons on youtube. Come back to Australia!

  • Its Not what you Play It`s the Way you Play it !, Thank you John Entering second Jhana on that one , James keene Perth Western Australia

  • Nice, haha, Very nice.

  • awesome

  • GREAT RIFFS

  • WOW!!! It's great!!!

  • excellent !!!!!

  • Hey John, I used to watch you play at the Studio Cafe in Balboa. Lost track of you years ago. Nice hearing you jam again. :)

  • Then I'll work on it more! The Cafe? Another life. Thanks.

  • @johnhguitar Hey John, I fell in love with the Gibson Es 335 dot neck reissue a few months ago and started saving for it. I found one for 1800 used at a used guitar shop, but since i have started playing all these moderately high end guitars its hard to decide which one to buy. What guitar do you think is the best in that price range? I am doing pink floyd type stuff, rock, and jazzy stuff, but dont necessarily want the strat sound although i wouldnt mind it either. Any suggestions?

  • Maybe a PRS which is right in the middle.

  • @Lucashfoogle Strat all the way most versitale guitar and plus they look good!!!

  • hey are you using a pick here or just using fingers?

  • Both.....

  • @johnhguitar Great JOB!!!!!! I got more out of that then most lessons!!!! Thanks for your Time!!!!

  • very nice

  • Thank you for this clip, I'm a hack beside you..thoroughly enjoyed your playing

  • beautiful work!!

  • Very nice piece. !!!

  • 0:48 to 0:52... great lick!!!!

  • Nice jam , I wondering when you playing do you try to stand in penthatonic boxes or just play giving music chance to get out from inside of you? : )

  • Hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm standing inside boxes but I think when you're under a bit of pressure while doing these little demos it's a bit of both. I had a hard time hearing myself and the backing tracks and my timing is out-the-window here and there.

  • @johnhguitar True i watch video with pleasure second time Really nice! I Play guitar about few months I can preform some very simple blues jam (I mean i always play simple notes usually doing similiar things on diffrent frets it is quite basic) For now it is quite hard to me to get out of this "theme" So for me your playing is very impresive! I think i should spend more time on hearing myself Learning songs is not evrything I buy guitar with hope to be able play own things some day like you ;]

  • very peter green i love it!!!!

  • FOR ONE THING, I CAN'T HEAR THE MUSIC IN THE HEADPHONES AND MY GUITAR EVENLY, AND I SPENT ZERO TIME SETTING UP THE GUITAR SOUND. I JUST WALKED IN AND PLUGGED INTO THE CHEAP LITTLE ROLAND CUBE 30 THAT WAS SITTING THERE. I'M READY TO DO A BETTER ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very tasteful..soulful

  • With all due respect, you may think this video is not good, but as a drummer, I would love to have you playing anytime out in front of me. Have you listened to Frank Marino from Mahogany rush at all? He can also toast a few notes....Keep Rockin.

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G :OO

  • Jeez John, you haven't aged a bit in 25 odd years when I would see you play in Innocent Bystanders in Perth WA. Just did the math - 27 years eek. Great memories

  • I think the most aging I've done in my life was the year I spent in the Bystanders. Having to fill in for the very talented and much younger Johnny Deisel and sitting in the studio for weeks on end waiting to record my parts on the album was a nightmare. It was an old fashion record big and black. The producer said if you eat too much rabbit food you play rabbit music. He didn't like the idea of a musician with a healthy diet and a no-drugs-or-grog attitude. Thanks for the friendly hello.

  • @johnhguitar It might have been hard for you for that year, but us fans appreciated you and your talent. I remember you clearly and have always remembered your guitar playing and enthusiasm. Thanks. Leisa

  • can you tell me your pattern progressions thanks

  • I use E7 A7 B7 chords in a 12 bar blues format and improvise with E major and minor pentatonic scales with chromatic notes in between.

After listening to this track for the first time in over a year I think I'm complete garbage here. I wouldn't be surprise if youtube threw me out. SERIOUSLY!!!!!

  • @johnhguitar Come on!

  • @johnhguitar You must be joking John, great feel here, reminds me of Shuggy Otis

on his earlier recordings-must be the 335. We are often our own sternest critics but to an ear liking the Blues there is nice playing here man!

  • @johnhguitar NO NO NO........You need to have your ears tested. Maybe you blew out your high frequencies. I listened to this 5 times through Bose speakers and the neighborhood came flocking around with beers in hand.

  • @johnhguitar one man's trash is another man's treasure. Don't mean to give you any token sympathy, but I've been trying to crack your playing in this video for almost a year now. I see feeling, technique and the player having a great time combining the two. You may think you can do better, but that doesn't trivialize what you've done here. Respect though! for challenging yourself. Thanks for the elevation.

  • Yesterday I stumbled across a small pile of photos of me on some of my tours. I'm playing old teles, strats, Les Pauls, 335s, and it struck me how far this little video is from what I actually have done in the past. I've performed all over the place and have been in some fantastic bands and even made a good living as a guitarist on the road.

I fully appreciate your comments and I'm thrilled you like the content but till I see a video of myself in my element with my supporters I won't be done!

  • Comment removed

  • Great stuff im intermediate can you tell me your pattern progressions ,ill figuer the rest out thanks Bro

  • hey give us this backing track and let us do some video respones...that be cool...

  • I really love it:)

  • 2:40 SICK LICK

  • Hey John, thanks for taking the time to get back to me, it's very nice of you. I remember that night clearly. There weren't many punters there. One inebriated fellow kept getting in your face and you politely (or not) put him in his place. Later I was on the dance floor and you walked out and stood about two inches in front of me and wailed on your guitar all the time. It was a great night. Glad I've found you and if you come back I'll be sure to check you out. Take it easy.

  • Would this be the same John Heussenstamm I saw play about 22 years ago at Carmen at Miranda in Sydney with his band the Alligators? If it is, (could there be another) You were awesome. Great to see you again.

  • Yes it is I. I spent many years touring around OZ and eventually settled back in California to teach guitar and raise a family. Thanks for the support and maybe one day I'll return and play around there again. Thanks a million!

  • Blues is hard to play, because you must feel it. This man do it. =) Very good jam. =) *Thumb up*

  • really good i like it.

  • Hi John, That's very nice. You look like you enjoyed playing that. Just wanted to say thanks for putting some good videos out. I caqn hear Albert COllins/BB King in there?

  • haha I can tell that you got some inspiration from BB King, great job

  • That tone is amazing! Crunchy and bluesy, how I like it.

  • heck yea , love that tone

  • DANG, he's good!!!!

  • ... and in this corner, we have the bald Jimmy Page!

  • Very powerful playing. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

  • You have a very interesting style of playing! I'll be stealing a few of those licks.

  • That's a right tasty jam there. I've dug your reviews for some time, but it's a pleasure finally experiencing one of your full performances. As for the tone naysayers, we have to keep in mind that what sounds good to one person won't sound good to another. Tone is subjective.

On a different note (no pun intended) it's great to see how you just fell into that groove and made it come alive.

  • awsome

  • I love the licks, but not the sound of the licks. He really needs to play this same piece with better equipment.

  • I love the licks, but not the sound of the licks. He really needs to play this same piece with better equipment.

  • Sounds to bobwire-scratch. These licks would sound so much better with better equipment, please get you a good rich tube sounding marshall, and or a vox tube amp. Please don't defeat yourself with this poor equipment.

  • Wow!! One of the best jams I have heard on Youtube! I recognize several different influences in your style! Man you can do it all!! Very impressive!!! Loved it!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • ia that a fender blues junir amp, ilove them!

  • YO john that is real cool man! I really like it, I think you can deffinately say you can PLAY the blues!

for those of you who don't already know you can get free blues lessons at

    bluesguitarmastery(dot)co(dot)uk

i checked it out and F'in love it

    its weird,totally free!

  • great playin a little like the fat black guy who played 335 did goin down

  • John, fantastic sound. what key so I can jam with it on the harp.

  • That's some good stuff!

  • It is great tone, and it is great that he is not replicating anyone inparticular. But damn with a little less gain you would sound like BB king !!!

Regardless, i enjoyed this alot, and picked up quite a nice riff you did at the start. 5*

  • Excellent .. nice gritty tone, good feel, great hands, and "keep it interesting" hit good emotional cresendos, both dirty and precise,

what else could one ask for ...

    Excellent John!

    Masahallah brother...

  • John's a good player no doubt, for my taste too many notes without feel in this clip. I would have preferred less notey playing with more feel per note. The finger tap stuff, a little cheesy; leave it out. A good reference: Robben Ford's The Inside Story. Fat, fat, fat 335 sound. Oldy but a goody.

  • @tonestar100 Couldn't agree with you more! Too many notes--needs more space ( space creates tension )and I think he needs to play with some REAL EMOTION--too much same, same. Becomes Shredder crap for me--these guys need to really listen, and I mean LISTEN to true blues players. It's sad the direction that players have taken these days. Listen to Larry Carlton--he can play 1 note and it means more than 20 that this guy plays.

  • @bluesatbirth Hi Blues at Birth, Everyone is entitled to an opinion here on Youtube but i'm not sure what you are or not hearing???? I've been playing for 30 years and of course listening for more. This guy John is real real good! And very very soulful. I'm old school like you, the shredding stuff is just fluff. But I bet this guy could melt you with some slow stuff!! Just my opinion! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • excuse me while i try to scoop up whats left of my melted face.

  • Nice John,great pickin.............

  • holy crap... this guy totally rapes, he's amazing

  • Why didn't you just use your deluxe reverb on this take? It's almost a sin to use a digital OD on that gibson ES335.

  • just go on my youtube page i got some videos of me playin if u wanna check them out

  • i like it man good feel to this jam i coudlnt have done better myself

  • Oh you get a thank you for that. I want to hear YOU play. How can I do that? John

  • I just dont get why some people are saying you had shitty tone, I thought your tone was fine, and I am a tone fanatic , i have been playing for 35 years ,and am always searching for that ultimate sound , the guitar sounds great , , maybe what they are listening to it through, is the problem, anyway everytime I watch this video ,and I occasionally watch it , it inspires me,it is amazing to me how easily you seem to get into that zone , which is not always the case for most players great job !

  • Thanks for that. Make do with what's there and play your best. I could have carried in another amp to avoid the tone complaints but the playing was all I was really concerned about for youtube. Thanks again....

  • @dajbes58 with a guitar like that, you would have to try to produce a bad tone.

  • @Do21or12Die Yeah your right LOL

  • if you don't mined me asking how much was that guitar.

  • 2 Gs to a friend.

  • Real nice playing. Great variation in choice of notes. Got to agree with a few others about the tone tho. Just a tad to thin.

  • just stumbled across yer site. Buddy, this here don't do justice to what yer heart may want to xpress, right?

U've got such a shitty tone here, i cant't believe u're serious about that. Wanna kid us???

Man, get yerself a decent amp!!!!

  • I know I know. I walked into the studio and used what was there without wanting to carry anything in from the car. Too bad though like you I don't take it seriously when it sounds like shit.

  • a couple of parts in the beginning need a little speed lick but that is awesome... your great... you sound eric clapton influenced

  • Great stuff, some of it sounded so like Chicago to me, and a real feeling. The speed stuff isn't for me, but man you are good.

  • Dude, absolutely amazing. I watched it twice in a row. First as a perpetual guitar student, and then, simply as a blues fan. Got goose bumps both times. God bless you, man!

I hope and wish that someday I'm able play with similar soul n skill.

  • Thanks. This was mainly for students and generating an interest. When I'm in a club in front of a hyped up audiences I tend to put on more of a show. I have some lousy recordings of good performances and I'm hoping one day a good show will get recorded decently. Thanks for your interest.

  • Dudes got serious chops...

  • Great playing! :)

  • chills

    5 stars

  • that sounds GREAT the

  • is that a semi acoustic guitar?

  • Know as a semi-acoustic or thinline.

  • thanks

  • stop messing up my feelings! blues like that makes me not know what way isnt up

  • Can I ask did you also play and record the backing track with a rhythm section..?

The amp being used is the Fender De-ville, or similar? Some archetypal blues licks in here, a classic.

  • Any chance you could make this available for download??

  • done.

    -jc

  • very nice

  • He reminds me a bit of Danny Gatton.I like the Hendrix style lick just before he takes the pick up.Check out 2:25 to 2:33.I,d love a 335 great tone out of them a vintage one please!

  • Beautiful!!!

    Grandma mary

  • Even I think that's funny! I see the way!

  • my lord. This was brilliant. I know your heart has been broken before.. cuz the way you play them blues... damn.

  • little bit of slash stuff 1:44

  • Nice. Great hearin' you, BaBa and Leo in Tiburon! You rocked the house.

  • Nice playing, John. I appreciate your work on YouTube. Thanks for sharing your gift. I like you "crying" technique around 1:14. You play it like it's a moaning woman who lost her love!

  • good man!

  • heavy duty

  • u truely defined feeling u sound like SRV using bb kings tone

  • You're lost man. Hope Stevie can't read that.

  • why hes completely using the same techniwue as him

  • The sound you're gettin' in this video kinda reminds me of Buddy Guy...

Great job man, frikkin' sick jam.

  • "Play that thing with feeling and it doesn't matter what guitar it is"

    Bravo John!!!! Absolutely Fantastic!

  • DAMN John...that was fine as wine !

  • I live near heussenstamm :DDD

  • Heussenstamm here i come!

  • feeling is the thing what are ya guys wondering about its just feeling either you have it either you dont you cant learn

  • If the 335 you're favorite guitar to play if you have to choose? I have one as well but I'm normally a strat player I'm getting the feel for this guitar but it's heaps different.

  • It's been over a year since I've made this oddball video. I walked into the studio, grab the guitar, plugged in and played, I didn't even consider how I should treat the tone of the guitar! I really don't like this demonstration but it creates an interest and that's what it's for. I've gone through every guitar under the sun and it's all a personal preference. I think the strat is the most versatile but it isn't a 335. Play that thing with feeling and it doesn't matter what guitar it is. Thanks

  • Yeh! I can see why you don't like this John.........Nah - just kidding...if i could play as fluently, i'd be over the moon and well proud of this vid.

  • Thanks. I intend to upgrade this blues example and play with a more personal sound. This was done with an a Roland Cube 30, not my choice of amps or the guitar these days...

  • yooooo would you have a backtrack to this peice, that would be awesome becuz the pple im jamin with now cant do rythym this style but its whats good to practise over for getting a bluesy style

  • how its feel in solo fantasy...i need feel like...

  • i love the bluessss

my favourite thing to jam too!

  • minchia......

  • O men I need this tab, u have the guitar domined. I love the blues. And I need blues tabs. TY

  • you do not need tabs, you need to learn all the modes so you can improvise like he does... theory is the key to everything my friend ;)

  • I disagree. Theory isn't the key to everything. Knowing the guitar is. If you know what kind of sound the guitar will make when you play this and this way, then you will be able to improvise forever. Theory is good if you're gonna play sheet music and stuff. Experience guitar players will tell you to forget all about scales and modes when jamming and just relax and have fun.

  • well, theory is just a way of writing down how it will sound. So your opinion is a contradiction

  • But I think we both can agree that "musical theory" is something you learn by reading books and listening to a teacher. Not by playing a guitar six hours a day.

  • Yes we can agree, but only for a part of it... you can practice six hours and just play what you feel, but it will not really infect the quality of your playing, while practising on theory does infect your playing and it will increase your skill. allthough I know what you mean, feeling is important, and sth its wise to ignore all the theory for a time and focus on the feeling instead, but you cant deny theory.. it's everywhere in my playing and probs in yours too

  • I would say it's more important to focus on being with your guitar instead of being with theory. I agree with you that theory demands at least some of your time. That's why I watch YouTube videos, check up chords online etc. To learn some theory, but I've spent most of my time just playing and it's a damn effective way of learning - to just DO IT!

  • yes ofcourse :D Im happy im through with all this theory its rly a pain in the ass xD

  • I highly doubt there is a tab. try watching a few of his licks and improvising a little bit.

  • u rock man, where can i get that back-track?

  • SOUNDED SWEET, jOHN.

  • That is really a blues !!. If you wish you can visit my blues site.

  • what string gauge would you reccomend for blues? the strings I've got are too tense for bending a lot, an lighter gauges go out of tune when i bend.

  • what string gauge do you use now?

  • I currently use 10s, but the really feel thicker than 10s usually do, I have a friend who plays 11s, and his are easier to bend than mine.

  • I find that my vibrato is smoother and my bends are a little harder but more consistent with 10's vs 9's... not to mention a bit more chunky tone. I tried a set of 11's and well, let's just say I am not ready... hehe ♪♫

  • Try going down half a step, personally I love fighting the strings there's no way to fake it. I like tens and elevens for different reasons. I wouldnt recommend anything heavier for lower quality instruments.

  • Yeah, my guitar isn't lower quality, its a USA Fender Strat from 98, I guess I just buy a bad brand. :/

  • Im sorry, I didn't mean to imply you played a lower quality instrument. For blues type music I usually tune down a half step. I used to be against it on principle, but changed my mind over the years. I posted a blues demo using concert pitch, but soon Ill post one tuned down a half step as soon as I figure out how to use this f@#@% cubase software. Leslie West used to blow peoples minds when he would show up with these blue chip stamps guitars, Kmart quality.

  • watch me and my bands jams. we want feedback

  • One of my Favs Jams on Youtube ! I like everything on it.

  • this was great, but your guitar playing is definetely not my style, I prefer to let my licks breath a little bit more.

  • 10's it is !

  • great, great playin...u got sum soul man ! Question...i've got the Heritage H-555 custom, which is an outstanding semi-hollow. do u use 10s or 11s and why ?

  • Dude, if you really want it to sound good you gotta go thicker; 12's, or 13's if you can. The thinner the strings, the thinner the sound. SRV used 13's.

  • That is not entirely true. Take Billy F. Gibbons, who plays with 8's and has a warm luscious tone to die for. Its all in the hands man, come on.

  • Yes, but if he played with thicker strings his tone would be ever more luscious and to die for.

  • I hate the amp we use in the studio but it creates a level playing field when you're trying out lots of guitars.

  • 10's cause I can bend those in a standard tuning.
