  • im lost

  • hey people... I have a question: Im looking for an anime i´ve seen in france a couple of years ago... and as my french aint decent i had no idea what anime that was... saw only 1 episode of it anyway... It was about a group of girls in mechas. These mechas were transported to the battle in some kind of train, the locomotive had a front shaped almost like a face with big teeth... they were fighting... something (no idea what...) and got horribly beaten up as one after the other mechas exploded...

  • ahhh, memories. incidentally, I also miss the old Sci-Fi (not "see fee") Channel.

  • @twominutepenalty me too when they had 2am anime fests......first time I saw vamp hunter d

  • Yes! Had it on VHS!

  • Maybe Aniplex can do a limited edition version of this movie for like $90.00...I would be all over it :)

  • @tom11zz884 its on dvd I have a copy of it

  • Why are the faces in anime so lazily done, when the rest of the animation doesn't take any short cuts?

I'm not complaining. I'd just like to hear from anyone who can explain the aesthetic.

  • Streamline Pictures... yes, managed by Carl Macek, actually played this in small independent theaters. It was a simple transition as there was very little dubbing necessary.

Streamline Pictures also brought over the 1st dubbed version of Laputa, which was a much better english dub than the later Disney version and kept the soundtrack intact. This was also shown in small independent theaters.

  • This is the first anime I saw too,but I saw it when I first got cable back in the 80's. Now I'm a full fledged otaku... thanks Japan! :D

  • I remember watching this on Cartoon Network probably like 16-17 years ago....this was one of the first anime's I had ever seen, right along with Vampire Hunter D and Twilight of the Cockroaches

  • I remember seeing this on the sci-fi channel a long time ago, it might have been the first anime I ever watched this or galaxy express 999 XD

  • This was my first exposure to Anime. This is probably the reason I expect my mind to be utterly blown by anime, or I'm let down. This was on a bootleg tape with some anime about a group of women with these robot suits. I can't remember the name of it, but they were fighting some evil corporation that made killer robots. There was also an anime where there was this guy with an awesome car with wheels that could turn sideways and he was rescuing some girl.

  • @BWHORROR the car one was riding bean

  • @Skrimpish Any idea why Riding Bean is immortal apparently? I don't remember them every saying anything about it in the film. Weird, weird anime.

  • @BWHORROR I think it's just over the top action/cartoon. Similar to how rambo goes up against an army and always lives.

  • @BWHORROR I wonder if the women in robot suits was Sol Bianca. I haven't watched it in a long long time. Sorta rings a bell though.

  • @svfighter Nah, it turns out it was Bubblegum Crisis. Pretty sweet show...

  • Japanese animation, and in certain regards animation in general, matured in the 80s. This film is an example, two or three of the features standing out on top - the motion, the detail, the detail of motion (as in the clothes in blowing wind). Except for Ghost in the Shell, and the Miyuzaki films, anime has largely has gone downhill.

  • Robot carnival is a classic!!!!

  • Thank you, it was my favorite. I had been looking for it.

  • Very underated anime. I give it a B, since some of the sequences are boring/generic/average. However, there are definatly some shorts that are very good. I recoomend everyone to watch it on the grounds of how different it is. :D

  • It's like cyberpunk West Side Story. Death and violence with a musical score.

  • Love those...goats?

  • The apocalypse will be choreographed.

  • awesome intro

  • i have been looking for this for years. my mom had it on a vhs tape with the original vampire hunter d when i was young and i have searched all over thinking it was called robot circus.

    this just made my night!!

  • I love Robot Carnival!!

  • I swear, that has to be one of the greatest openings to a movie I've ever seen.

  • Karn Evil 9 is incredibly appropriate here.

  • This was one of my first Japanese anime experiences too and I didn't get most of it, but I still thought it was cool and it still stuck with me. Thanks so much for putting it up! :)

  • i loved this anthology of anime shorts! saw it when i was really young...it is still amazing even today.

  • What a beautiful yet terribly tragic opening!

  • It marked a coming of age for anime, to those in the west anyway.

Proving you could use this art form to tell any kind of story, from comedy to truly serious sci-fi works.

It wasn't just a cartoon, it was a source of truly fresh content. The kind you just can't seem to find over here anymore.

  • @fullflavormenthol

Do you remember other 80's anime movies as a kid like Warriors of the Wind (the butchered US cut of Nausicaa), Unico 1 & 2, Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland, Voltron, Jack and The Beanstalk etc.? and did you also watched Vampire Hunter D, Heavy Metal, American Pop, Rock and Rule etc. on TBS as well?

  • @fullflavormenthol

Did you watch Heavy Metal, American Pop, Rock and Rule and Vampire Hunter D as well?

  • I saw this movie 18 years ago on TBS thanks to reading my city's TV guide and stated animated anthology Robot Carnival as i watched Heavy Metal, Rock and Rule, this movie, Twilight of the Cockroaches, Vampire Hunter D and American Pop and they ruled my world. They showed me animation can be for adults too, i did had earlier experience with anime such as Warriors of the WInd (My childhood fave which was the butchered Nausicaa), Unico 1 & 2, Jack and The Beanstalk, Voltron and Transformers

  • @fullflavormenthol I saw that same marathon. I was 15, lol. They also played Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and a REALLY edited version of Heavy Metal for some reason. I kept thinking to myself, 'Why play Heavy Metal. It's not Anime and editing it for television just ruins the plot of the stories.'

  • @ShadowACE1998

Same story man, i was 12 when those movies aired on TBS except i saw Akira at age 14 on video when i rented it and left an impression on me that i even bought it for my 15th birthday as it's been one of my favorites and even bought Heavy Metal uncut and uncensored on video as well at that age. I did taped Vampire Hunter D, Rock and Rule, Robot Carnival and Twilight of Cockroaches uncut on video from second VCR i had and loved them.

  • the 80s will never die

  • I havta admit.. I Did Not see that opening coming, lol!

  • My copy went missing 10 years ago T_T

    Thanks for uploading!

  • Its the Japanese Fantasia. Dude RC ROCKS!!

  • Congratulations on 50,000 views!

  • What's the music, I want to know!

  • First saw this on scifi channel years ago, back when scifi wasn't a steaming pile of shit. Downloaded it from torrents. Been happy ever since.

  • this along with the "cockpit" is some of the very best anime in the world

  • WHO WOULD BUILD THIS MONSTROCITY

  • My favorite is Presence... very haunting and filled with regret.

  • Have it on VHS, lol

  • This is a pretty obscure one, but its a great intro for people who are unfamiliar with anime, because it involves several different artists portraying several different stories. You get a good range of anime's potential as art and as storytelling.

  • I wish more challenge movies would happen, like this one. Such a simple idea to set a topic and select the top animators to do their take on the theme. I love Otomo's take on the childhood excitement of "the carnival is coming!", from joy to the terror of an automated carnival spreading devestation in it's wake!

  • I wonder if you can order this on DVD or download it?

  • @MikeTMerciless No DVD release. I'm sure there's a torrent somewhere.

  • This was actually one of the first animes that I ever watched. Loved it.

  • This one is very similar concept to a Phillip K Dick story called "GAME OF UNCHANCE!

  • Got this on VHS haven't got around to getting it on DVD or looking for it. Loved the short stories and the artwork.

  • I've always liked this film. I wish there was a R1 dvd release.

  • I remember seeing this on MTV along with Liquid Television when I was younger. Much younger.

  • Cartoon Network use to transmit this animation with Vampire Hhunter D at 2:00 clock in the morning.

  • @CaptCamping yup, I remember that. Also Sci-Fi channel on Monday nights.

  • I remember this fondly from when i was a kid. been searching for it forever but couldn't remember the name in the slightest, and when i'm searching for a mecha anime to watch, i finally find it. i think a tale of two robots and starlight angel were my favorites

  • wow I remember this! I even think I was around Nine years old when I had seen it too. And then I had caught it again during the early days of Sci-fi channel where they also played Akira and Ghost in the Shell on Saturdays. Hell yes! to the 90's generation. lol

  • Robot Carnival is a spiritual look at robotics, it is famous in science fiction circles; I even found that tiny theater in the big city that shows science fiction films on weekends, and watched Robot Carnival. This is a true story, if you can read mythology and the spirit, but presented in an entertaining format, including the opening sequences; such as Iraq and Afghanistan found as the U.S. Armed Forces fields combat robotics from sea, air, land, and space: whacked them.

  • this had to be one of the first animes i ever saw, and honestly i had no idea wtf was going on bc i was a young kid then

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I never thought I'd see these again. I remember watching it everytime they played it on the SciFi Channel's Anime hour (Saturday Anime and then when they moved it to Fridays). I saw it maybe three times and could never find the video or DVD, and I stumbled on these now as I was doing research for a major paper related to this, which is of course absolutely perfect timing. Thanks a bunch. It's like having a little piece of my childhood back :)

  • I agree completely, Entity4two. I loved this as a child and I owned the video but..it was ruined but now I found it on youtube! Yay!! x3

  • Fantastic! Thank you so much for uploading this. I was wondering if I would ever get to see it when I thought, "Hey, maybe it's on Youtube..."

  • This ws my first anime that I watched

  • @speedskate2010 Mine too!

  • さすが福島敦子!でしたっけか。上手いですね!

  • My dad, mom and sister were all crushed under the tracks that day. I was gone on a trip to Ontario, Canada. I think i would be happier now if i would have died with them.

  • anime its the best thing ever, manga its far beyond.

  • wow! i remember this as a kid! i watched this with my cousins, and i was blown away. it was my intro to animes, and i loved animes ever since xD

  • I've been looking for this Anima on DVD for several years now....this is one of the best.

  • if you want to bootleg this video and the others. 1 make a playlist. 2 get firefox and a free addon called download helper. 3 download or bootleg a video to dvd converter. ;) check out my blog i wrote down a how to with links and resources. good luck.

also on anime247 them have this movie on dvd

  • @WinterFuknMute665

    ..anime247 they.... lol

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I first saw it on SciFi Channel in the early 90s and taped it from there but I've about wore that tape out. I've been wanting to get a copy somewhere but even thought I haven't found one, I can enjoy it here.

  • I .. I just became a die hard fan. I need robot carnival in my collection that doesn't exist.

But it will start to exist WHEN I BUY THIS * U *

I'm flabbergasted that this hasn't been heralded as ONE OF THE MASTERPIECES et cetera. Every little thing I've seen from robot carnival has been wonderful. I'm almost reluctant to watch it before I buy it. But I need to find it in good quality!

  • @Endisaster You might try looking around for a functional VCR or Beta player. that is what Robot carnival was originally released on.

As to the film itself, a collective of artists, pretty much the finest of thier era, was put together and given a free reign task of each creating a short with only one stipulation. The short had to deal with robots. I wound up with a copy I have since worn out over the years by begging and pleading for my mom to buy it. I was 7-8 then, I'm 31 now.

  • I remember watching this on the Sci-Fi channel (at least I think it was the Sci-Fi channel... not sure) back in the mid to late 80s real late at night and it was confusing as all hell but I enjoyed watching it. Didn't know that all the shows were Robot Carnival, I just thought it was random artists showing off their good work.

  • Destroction never looked so fun

  • Any film that opens with the title screen appearing and destroying civilization has to be great

  • not much of any die hard fans? thats too bad? actually thats even better only a few get to enjoy the splendor, think about it.

  • Wow, the robot apocalypse is beautifully choreographed.

  • I Fell In-Love with this Shit YEARS ago...,!!!!!!

    I Agree with GreenBeardsRevenge.

  • As a matter of fact, I think that Ghost in the Shell, Gunn Mu, Rock Man, Gundam, Heavy Metal, etc might have been my inspirations for pursuing engineering in the first place. ( A bit sad and disturbing really.)

  • While this technically wasn't the first anime I ever saw (Saban's "Grimm's FairyTale Classics" and "Li'lbits" on NickJr would be), it's the first one I watched that was introduced as such. The seeds of Adult Swim were sewn...

  • ***WHY IS THIS NOT ON DVD????****

  • @GreenBeardsRevenge I keep wondering the same thing! It would have made perfect sense to re-release R.C. when the compilation film "Memories" came out.

Are the powers that be concerning these things reading this?

  • WoW WioW WoW WoW WoW WoW WoWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

    A jugernaut of frenzy....And then....Gone.......

One of *THE WORLD'S BEST* openings of any anime anywhere!!!

Saw this first at a con years ago. Scored a VHS copy!

    Love the screeching dancing dolls....

    And then

  • Why does it have to annihillate the villages with good architecture?

  • Ah I remember this when it came on the Scifi channel many years ago. Robots scourging the last traces of humanity from the face of the planet... In such a jovial manner. Priceless.

  • what

    the

    fuck

  • Why does nostalgia have to hurt so bad? Great video!

  • My favorite anime'. ^.^

  • Too bad this is only available on laser disc. I wish it would be rereleased on DVD sometime.

  • I always considered it the anime Fantasia

  • @MayhemMechanix it is actually, its japans response to it.

  • @MayhemMechanix

And anime's answer to Heavy Metal

  • Robot Carnival and Project A-ko B-ko, when the Sci-Fi channel ran Anime Saturdayz!!!! I feel young.

  • 80's anime was the best

  • ah I miss those days.

  • I remember watching this for the first time on sci fi channel...... good times

  • Disckotech who nicely re-issued Fist of the North Star should get the US rights for this and release it on DVD, who's with me?

  • Maybe we should get a petition going, and post it on their website. Funimation, Disckotech, Sentai Filmworks, Bandai U.S. Manga Corp. whoever. Please release this great classic on DVD,before it is forgoten.

  • @tom11zz884

Yes Ryoko/Disckotech or Image needs to get their asses to release this on DVD and Blu-Ray

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yes!

  • This is a pure classic. I have been trying to find the english dvd version for years. I got a ripped copy for now but I continue to wait for the remastering and rerelease of Robot Carnival

  • OMG!!!

Thank you for posting this I've been trying to find this for YEARS!

  • believe it or not the only time i saw this was on tbs at 2 in the morning like ten years ago. they played heavy metal after it.

  • @blackspiraldancer666 i was also watching that night :D

  • thats a fucking trip!!!

  • @SatansMullet

You too, how old were you? Did you watched Heavy Metal, American Pop, Vampire Hunter D and Rock and Rule as well?

  • Comment removed

  • isnt it funny the things you remeber?

  • @blackspiraldancer666

Definitely, both HM and RC with Vampire Hunter D, Rock and Rule, American Pop and Twilight of Cockroaches ruled my world at age 12 18 years ago.

  • i'd give anything to have scifi play this again...hell it'd probably get me to watch tv again if anything..i haven't seen this in years

  • there are so many versions dragonball z box sets, naruto collections, evangelion re-re-re-re release of box sets//and yet Robot Carnival and other oldschool classics still m.i.a. . LONG LIVE SATURDAY MORNING ANIME

  • you know...if today's animator just looked at the animation produced in the 80's and 90's they'd learn so much abou how to create a good and proper animation. none of the infantile nonsense that we get today.

  • true

  • @Entity4two I like some of the new stuff but some times it can get too zany. Then again I am biased towards the cyberpunk, Scifi, and robot anime. I also like the rustic feel that the animation of the 80's and 90's. The robots had just the right amount of technical detail. I study mechatronics so this is especially appealing to me.

  • @Entity4two couldnt agree more

  • @Entity4two you obviously have restricted yourself to what maybe more people are watching. amazing animation is being created everyday if you wish to be a close minded fool and look at the past don't expect to see amazing animation in the future.

  • @Entity4two YOU my friend, have said EVERYTHING I had been thinking in regards with today's animation studios and encapsulated that into one beautifully coherent statement that I COULDN'T agree with more. I look at what's on television today and what my younger siblings only know and I weep for them. They are robbed of the childhood I had been privy to. Now I'm collecting all the DVDs and VHSs I can so that I can show them to my son when he's old enough to talk.

  • It's a cryin' shame that this is out of print.

I remember watching this on SciFi channel on Saturday morning~!!!

  • iT IS AMAZING THIS ISN'T OUT ON DVD YET. AND WHEN YOU THINK OF SOME OF THE SILLY ANIME TITLES THAT MADE IT TO DVD, AND THIS HASN'T..SHAMEFUL

  • Joe Hisaishi (composer behind all of Miyazaki's films) actually conducted the music for "Robot Carnival" with the exception of 1 segment. :)

  • the people who drew akira mustve drawn this too.

  • @KGPF21

Of course it's Katushiro Otomo of Akira fame!

  • @Johnlindsey289 His style is easily recognized, especially if you've seen either the movie "Akira" or the manga "Akira".

  • Can't help but to think 'Baysplosionz'

  • God i remember this thing from when i was alittle kid. Also the twilight of the cockroachs. I always wondered where i knew these scenes from but could never remember a name. Thanks alot.

  • Wow, definitely by Otomo here. It's a great anime that introduced the 90's generation to anime (along with AKira, Ghost in the Shell, and all the films they ran on Scifi). It's a very beautiful piece of work that needs to be released.

  • I also remember seeing this on Sci-Fi when I was younger. Thanks for the upload.

  • dude i am also one of those die hard fans of this anime.

i fully appreciate you uploading this opening scene

  • They should do an anniversary DVD. This movie is also from Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame.

  • hey man thanks a lot to upload this kind of anime, the real pieces of art of this gender like vampire hunter d XD

  • it been long time Since i see it But when i stated watching i cought so late i whi I knew abut it sooner but oh well may I find on dvd Some day or see my gf can find them and download them for me

  • Whoa... it's been a while.

I remember seeing this on Sci-Fi.

My mom had taped it for me, but I lost it.

    Thnx for upload man.

  • thanks! seeing this brought a tear to my eye

  • thanks a ton, Robot Carnival is one of the few animes I have been unable to get on DVD. I can't believe this hasn't been officially released yet. and people wonder why piracy exists...

  • holy shit dude! i'm so happy you have this anime here ! it means so much to me. . . !

  • Awesome. thanks for the upload. hard to find it anywhere.

  • ROFL @ 3:34

I love how the explosions on the ground hurl a few villagers and cattle high into air with the fireworks. lol

Robot Carnival is the first anime I ever really liked. It's still one of my favs to this day.

  • This was the first anime I remember liking...

  • Lies - Robot Carnival was AWESOME. Wish I could find it on DVD or something...

  • I taped this back the 90's on WTBS Anime Marathone weekend. I loved it. It was far ahead in theme and graphics.

  • last time i saw this was on animation cell-a-bration in 95 or 96.

  • yo! when i first heard this in '95 i thought i was goin' nuts 'cuz i couldn't understand what was being said. i was 8 and i think it was my first time hearing another language.

  • Really, thanks for uploading this. I don't know where else to come by any Robot Carnival, so this is pretty much a Godsend.

  • wow. simply wow. thank you for the upload.

  • LOL It's soooooooooo ridiculous!

  • I first got this as a vhs fan sub about 15 years ago (I've been an anime fan for nearly 25 years now, if you include me watching Robotech on cable in the mid-80s) and utterly fell in love with it, despite the crappy image quality. 'Nightmare' is probably my favourite sequence in the film, 'Presence' coming a close second. Still a shame this is not available on dvd/Blu-Ray here in the UK, as it is a lovingly-crafted classic and has aged exceptionally well. Thanks for sharing this; good memories.

  • dude robotech was the shiznits i bout cried when roy died but then again i watched it in the early 90s when i was like in first grade but still its my alltime fav anime still.

  • OMg Thank you for posting this up this is my first anime that ever watched

  • I remember watching this as a kid in the 90s on SciFi.

  • me too!!

  • Comment removed

  • Sweet lord!

  • Thank you so much for posting parts of Robot Carnival. I remember seeing these when I was younger. Just watching these bring back so many memories, this was one of the very first animes that I had the pleasure of watching. After I watched this, I was pretty much hooked for life. You just don't find good stuff like this anymore. I can't thank you enough for sharing this.

  • This was one of the first anime movies I saw

  • I LOVED THIS SHORT COLLECTION SO MUCH WHEN I WAS A KID!!!!!!

wow. im so happy this is up! thank you!!!

  • holy shit do i remember this

  • Truly a great film. This was the second anime I ever saw and one the few movies I have on vhs, and had to get it on dvd as well. Thanks for the upload!

  • I remember I was 12 when I first saw this on the SciFi channel anime block. This was when anime back in the late 80s early 90s was just booming in the US and for me Robot Carnival is one of those iconic old animes that you just cant forget. (along with Akira, Project Ako, Galaxy Express and many others to) I notice the Scifi channel is trying to bring their anime late nite showings back right now with titles such as Noein, but unfortunately I rarely put the effort into to watching them.

  • Yes! I remember watching it on Thanksgiving day one year. There was a Anime marathon going on and this was one of them. I think they also showed Dominion Police and Venus Wars. All great anime if you ask me.

  • Yups, damn right. I own Venus Wars and its the best! XD

  • @meka703

I was your age back in 93 when i saw those except i saw Akira on rental video when i was 14 and grew up with that stuff
