Man, they downplayed Tom's viciousness and made Bev's father more viscous. I think Bev's husband being such a monster is one of the things that made a lasting impression in the novel.

Yeah, he was a controlling monster. He was far more viscious (he even beats her best friend to within an inch of her life) in the book and while Beverly's dad was also rough he wasn't as heartless and angry as the movie portrayed him. They kinda went in opposite directions in this film with those 2 characters.
