It's very easy to say that but it is a subconscious instinct to avoid hitting things.

During split second decision making, you don't have time to think "If I avoid the dog, I'll cause a traffic accident", thus your instincts does the thinking for you, since it's designed to make quick decisions. It sees the dog, recognizes a danger and prompts you to avoid it. Instincts usually doesn't take more then 2-3 things into consideration and doesn't think more then 1-2 seconds ahead of time.
