This is so terribly sad but I'm glad it ends well. I spent several years in Utah although I am not LDS. So many people are in pain and cannot be themselves, trying always to conform to the rules of the church. I hope the church learns to truly embrace all its members, because there have been way too many suicides caused by this situation. I also hope these men (and women) will eventually allow themselves to leave the church if it cannot accept them for who they truly are.

I live in Utah. I am LDS. I am a Lesbain. My bishop told me that I couldn't follow God's plan. So I asked to leave the church. I got told I had to write a letter to the church telling them I was sorry. Fuck the church. If God won't let me be in then I'll party it up in HELL!!!
The mormon church has really come out of the closeted after it's clear they were behind the Prop8 victory in California taking away civil rights from LGBT people. In a way it's good because it's always good to know your enemy. I don't think the LDS church would have expected the firestorm of negative publicity they are getting all over the world that will for years to come cost the church way more than what the paid for the anti gay hatefull campaigns in California.
Gays have always been here even before the arrival of mormons in utah or anywhere else, but they followed a certain way of life, and were highly regarded among different people. But then these people came and said "thats a sin!" and "god hates that!" these people follow writings in a book, but really each of us must have a 1 on 1 relationship with the creator (god) Not going to a building to pray once a week, do it every day anytime, anywhere.

But isn't this repressing homosexuality? It is admitting it is inherent in a person's make-up, but it is encouraging pushing it under the rug in a different way: saying that that kind of partnership is not okay. God intends us all to have bonds throughout eternity - together, saying God made you people for eachother?

I have a lot of respect for this man, as he wants to do right by God's Law, and stay close to God, and he knows by doing so, he still accepts who he is as a person, and respects himself enough to know what his boundaries are and abides by them. He is following what he knows is right. I commend his will and his strength. I am not gay, and am also LDS. I wish I could be as strong as him, in my temptations that I deal with daily.

As long as some people are sanctioned not only to acknowledge their sexuality, but to fully express it and others aren't, I wonder if Gary will ever feel truly equal in LDS. I heard another account of a gay Mormon who felt he could not live a life that was not fully expressed. After a great inner struggle he left. It's a shame b/c like Gary, he felt very akin to Mormonism. He also had a very successful, fulfilling mission. But that wasn't enough. It would be best for the church to change policy.

As an LDS married woman, I don't know where you are getting your information. Mormon men have one wife, just like the rest of the world. If their wife dies or they are divorced, they are allowed to marry again. If men OR women break the law of chastity by "sleeping around," it is taken very seriously and may result in excommunication. I couldn't allow others to read your remarks thinking they were true for they are completely false.
You mormons hate gays, no matter what, I am gay and if a church doesn't allow me to be who I am, then I am not joining, you say that you encourage people to love each other, but you don't let gay people to be who they are.

Evangelicals have their share of gay Christians as I even attended an Evangelicals Concerned Conference in California 3 years ago. It is amazing how many Christian denominations have gay membership and how several of these denominations are finally coming around and embracing and supporting gay people for the gift of God they truly are.

Since posting my last response I've wanted to take it back. It was stupid and in haste. I understand that people are attracted to the same sex. However, I do not believe that homosexuality(choosing to be with another of the same sex) is natural or God-given. I simply feel that to follow a natural instinct because it feels like a natural instinct is a poor way of making choices. I do not wish any person dead, and I'm sorry you wish I was.
Same sex attraction is not God given. But is a trial that God allows to happen. Those who are faced with this challenge are probably the strongest souls there are, and I admire their struggle.... but I STRONGLY disagree with homosexuality. I have many friends who are on that path, and who I love! I believe they can maintain morality - because they are still people. Amazing people. I have a lot of respect for this man, as he wants to do right by God's Law, and stay close to God, and he knows by doing so, he still accepts who he is as a person, and respects himself enough to know what his boundaries are and abides by them. He is following what he knows is right. I commend his will and his strength. I am not gay, and am also LDS. I wish I could be as strong as him, in my temptations that I deal with daily.

Don't try to understand human sexuality through the lenses of a religion. Look at evolutionary psychology and biology, sociology and the social sciences. If you try to understand human sexuality as extolled from the perspective of religion you will be misled. Human sexuality came first, religion much much later. We evolved to be extremely gregarious and sexually diverse in our drives. Dont feel bad if your religion doesn't understand you, your DNA is much, much older and wiser than "thou shalt"

As long as some people are sanctioned not only to acknowledge their sexuality, but to fully express it and others aren't, I wonder if Gary will ever feel truly equal in LDS. I heard another account of a gay Mormon who felt he could not live a life that was not fully expressed. After a great inner struggle he left. It's a shame b/c like Gary, he felt very akin to Mormonism. He also had a very successful, fulfilling mission. But that wasn't enough. It would be best for the church to change policy.

As an LDS married woman, I don't know where you are getting your information. Mormon men have one wife, just like the rest of the world. If their wife dies or they are divorced, they are allowed to marry again. If men OR women break the law of chastity by "sleeping around," it is taken very seriously and may result in excommunication. I couldn't allow others to read your remarks thinking they were true for they are completely false.

If this tortured man could get married to another man and have a life with someone, experiencing all the intimacies of a relationship then he would be able to go forward as Hinkley stated. Since posting my last response I've wanted to take it back. It was stupid and in haste. I understand that people are attracted to the same sex. However, I do not believe that homosexuality(choosing to be with another of the same sex) is natural or God-given. I simply feel that to follow a natural instinct because it feels like a natural instinct is a poor way of making choices. I do not wish any person dead, and I'm sorry you wish I was.

Same sex attraction is not God given. But is a trial that God allows to happen. Those who are faced with this challenge are probably the strongest souls there are, and I admire their struggle.... but I STRONGLY disagree with homosexuality. I have many friends who are on that path, and who I love! I believe they can maintain morality - because they are still people. Amazing people. I hope anyone with this difficultly can work through it in a faithful way, and in a way that God would approve.

if same sex attraction is not God given, who made approximately 10% of all observed animals gay? i'm not even making this up! about 10% of observed animal species display homosexual tendencies (ie, never mate with the opposite sex, form sexual relationships with a member of the same sex, etc). doesn't religion teach us that animals do not have free will? then how did they "choose" to be gay unless god wanted them that way?

okay first of all, im just stating my FAMILY's opinion. my mom doesnt believe in homosexuality. i dont need a full run-down paragraph on god's actions towards homosexuality and the history behind it. there is no point in stating all this because the truth is, you dont know the answer. I dont know the answer. albert einstein doesnt know the answer. so drop it.

Homosexuals and heterosexuals alike need to celebrate the truth at the center of this story. Ultimately, it is saying that God created everyone and called it good. Isn't this the heart of the text?

What a refreshing depiction! This is a polarizing issue. My admiration goes out to this guy. He's kept his faith, accepted his sexuality, and stepped forward to tell people about his struggle. Not easy for someone in our situation.
