  • he just got better speed endurance, not lactic acid to worry about for 100, thats 200 some ppl have to be strategic about running out of available ATP, unless ur michael johnson haha. the lactic acid starts to build to a threshold where it cant be cleared fast enough because theres not enough oxygen coming in to break it down, but 100m is such a short event its get up and go lol. lewis was an exceptional 200m runner also, it would be interesting to seen have seen him at 150m

  • anyone saying he kept energy for the end of the race because people are slowing is just plain mad. Anyone talking about formation of lactic over 10 seconds of exertion is also mad. I am wasting my breath i feel on this though.

  • @rhodesdarcy lol

  • epic run..i got only one question, how can WR was 9,90 and CR was 9,80??

  • why didnt he race in the 1992 olympics games? Injury?

  • @FernandoNINETorres I believe that Mr Lewis finished in only 6th place in the 100 metres at the U.S. Olympic trials, back in June of 1992. Apparently, he was not in the best of health at the time ...... and this contributed to his lack-lustre performance. In the 200 metres sprint (at the same Olympic trials) he finished 4th - and thus did not qualify to compete in that event, either.

  • king of doped clowns and lieing cheaters , typical US track & field , typical of any success of US sports of last 30 years , what else ?? xDD

  • now a days tht time cant get u a medal at the world championships.......lol

  • Carl Lewis 21.5 strides to 100m!

  • @iMaDeMoN2012 that's counting 2 steps as a stride... better to say 43 strides, less misleading. Otherwise people will think he was taking 5 meter steps.

  • @kozmon0t paces...my mistake

  • @iMaDeMoN2012 John Ngugi the distance runner took about 36 strides per 100

  • @kozmon0t Now you are being confusing. Paces are done by selecting a foot and counting the number of steps that foot takes over a distance. Paces are also the basis for the mile, where "mile" means a thousand in many Latin languages. Paces can also be synonymous with stride; in which a stride is the distance traveled from one foot fall to same foot fall.

  • @iMaDeMoN2012 well in that case, Ngugi took about 18 strides per 100 meters.

  • There's something i don't understand. There's another video of Lewis in 1998 on youtube where he demolishes his personnel best, going from 9.93 to 9.78. And here in 1991 the CR is 9.80. Why didn't they take his 9.78 into account ?

  • @nicolaipoko The 9.78 was heavily wind aided and it was in 1988 not 1998. :)

  • @nicolaipoko the 9.78 was wind aided, that's why.

  • USAIN BOLT.

  • lol cr 9.80, just noticed that roid time

  • This is the greatest 100m final I had ever seen when you take into account how many runners broke 10 seconds.

  • I was 11 years when he won three gold medals here in Helsinki (first athletics world championships) 1983. It was awesome for a young boy to see him running and jumping.

  • @ Everyone: CR = Current Record, it can be outside of the world. I guess at that point in time some aliens were faster than humans by a bit.

    Just kidding -.-

Anyhow that was a good race, his start could have been better but like some are saying he purposely ran in about the middle most of the race, even though you can try to go all out for 100m, it isn't possible to hold top speed that long, the winner is who slows down the least at the end normally and that's how he won.

  • Great finish! Bad start!

  • What an amazing finish that guy had. His closing speed was off the charts. He was no better than 4th with 30 meters left and sets world record. Love or hate but best track athlete of the last half century. Four straight olympic golds in the long jump. Enough said. His sisters was full of herself but he was the real deal. Couldn't sing for crap. But the guy was the best since Jessie Owens

  • He's a drug user, at least Bolt, Gay & Powell are clean !!

  • @ 19 freaking Carl Lewis ran sub 10 and was fastest man in the world.

LAST clean runner you will ever see. Maybe leroy burrel (track coach @ UH) was last clean runner as well. Bolt is dirtier than Tela Tequila!!!

  • The country record says 9.80, the record that lewis broke says 9.90. I'm confused here. Lol. How is that 9.80 not the world record?!?!? someone fill me in on this please.

  • @EPizits Carl Lewis ran the 9.80cr a day earlier in the quarter finals, but it was wind-aided, so it can not count towards the world record.

  • @accord21 but i thought anything over 2.0 cant count toward a record

  • @944usainbolt Correct. I don't recall why they had the time posted as the cr, but that was the time Carl Lewis ran wind-aided in the quarter finals the day before.

  • Simply the greatest track athlete of the 20th century

  • fruitcake

  • Carl himself said that he never sells himself at the beginning of the race. It not that he is going any faster just the others are slowing down more than he is.....got to time it right though .........otherwise they won't come back ala Ben Johnson.

  • what time would carl lewis have had if he had a start like powel

  • whats the cr and why is it lower than the world record

  • 2 Usain Bolt- what can i say. i know he's not been around as long as some of the other greats, but this ma breaks world records with such ease, not to mention he broke what everyone thought was untouchable. He is the only man that can take Carl off of the mountain, but he will need more years under his belt.

  • in my opinion, Carl is the greatest of all time, longevity is what makes him stand apart frome the rest. in my opinion it ranks like this and ill give the my reasons

1 Carl Lewis- 16 years as the King plus in 91 at the same meet broke the the word record in the 100m and jumped over 29 feet 3 times in the same meet, which is something no one else have ever done. 4 gold in LJ. I COULD GO ON AND ON.

  • thats a proper race!

  • Argueably the best ever!

  • Drug cheat lewis can rot

  • ?

bolt is built for the 400m.

if he can structure his run and know when to use his speed, he could probs break the record...

  • I remember watching this live in the UK, with Daley Thompson in the TV studio. Amazing race, amazing championships. Anyone got the 400m individual? Roger Black was 2nd, should have been champion because Pettigrew was a druggie!

  • I honestly cannot believe he won the race and got a WR with that start. He was behind 90% of the whole race, damn!

  • well he wasn't a starter

  • sry, but usain bolt is better

  • 43:18 actually

  • カールルイスの世界記録への道程を振り返ると、やはりウサインボルトの記録更新は違和感がある。

  • Bolt should compite at the long jump and 400...

  • he said hes going to compete in long jump before he retires

  • yeah i wrote the comment days before he said that.

  • 100m: 9,86s

    200m: 19,79s

    Long Jump: 8,87m

  • Carl Lewis fastest time at 200m is 19.75s. He ran that at the US National in 1983. It was said if Lewis never showboated by raising his hands up with about 15 meters left, he would of set the 200m world record. I saw the race on youtube before, he might of ran a low 19.6

  • aint matter now, it's all Bolt now at 19.30...

  • @kohweiming 19.19 seconds now, actually. Mr Bolt is certainly a phenomenal athlete, and a superb physical human being. That said, he now has a formidable rival in the shape of Mr Yohan Blake; one of his Jamaican team-mates. I think that Mr Blake has shown that he is more of a danger (to Bolt) in the 200 metres than he in the shorter sprint.

  • i met carl lewis in tha 5th grade!!!

    he koo az hell!

  • Doesn't anyone ever comment or query why all the "World class" sprinters and athletes have at some stage worn braces? Isn't it common knowledge that HGH caused the protruded growth of the jaw bone ? Lewis, Marion Jones, Leroy Burrell, Cathy Freeman of Australia - Were they all just vain in their old age ? Or blatant cheats ?

  • Thats interesting, I never knew that. What gains does HGH give?

  • Your braces theory seems to be a bit of a stretch. I think it more plausible they got braces because they were all top sprinters and at the end of every race they had a microphone jammed in there face for a close up interview while millions of viewers stared at their grill. Also to look nice for endorsements. I can see wanting to having your teeth look nice in these situations. In Cathy Freemans case, her teeth were just plain jacked. But I still thought she was gorgeous.

  • "3 banned steroids"? Are you a total moron? none of those are steroids. pseudoephedrin is in cold medicine. You've proven you're an idiot who doesn't understand the simplest fact.

  • Loved this race! Linford C ran the fastest time of his life and still came 4th.

  • No, Linford Christie later ran a pb of 9.87 in 1993, which is the european record. Dwain Chambers is the only european to have run the same time since.

  • Actually Dwain Chambers time of 9.87 is null and void according to the IAAF. He ran that time in the same race when Tim Montgomery set the world record 9.78. That time is null and void too. Chambers top time is 9.97 which he ran at the 99 Worlds. Francis Obikwelu owns the European Record of 9.86 win he came second in the 2004 Olympics.

  • Whatever, the main point was that Linford Christie subsequently ran faster than in this race and it was a european record at the time.

  • OK, so if your point was Christie ran 9.87, that should of been the end. But, you just happen to state another point about Chambers also running 9.87, which according to the IAAF, isn't correct.

  • He ran it! I saw it live with my own eyes. I don't care what the IAAF deam to be legal, or valid, he still ran it. Look at you, haven't you got something better to do than reply to comments that were made months ago. Do something with your life and get off my case.

  • I couldn't careless if you saw the resurrection of Jesus, Chambers was a dope offender. He admitted that he was on HGH when he ran that time. End of Story. If I don't have a life, why are you then still replying back to my comments, rather then ignoring them. It's seem to me 1: you are the one that doesn't have a life, well, one that has any true meaning. 2: you must be a friend or family member of Chambers because it seems I touched a nerve about that subject, why your are getting so touchy!

  • Seriously, why don't you get a life? I couldn't care less about chambers. If he ran 9.87 seconds then he ran it, whether it's deamed legit by some beurocracy or not. You think the likes of most of todays top sprinters are legit? Most are on drugs! You came here to start an argument, posting answers to comments made months ago. I see ***holes like you on here all the time, looking to start arguments to give your life some meaning. Get lost! But you'll stay and try to fight some more won't you?

  • Moron! Your first reply in this post was to correct a 6 months old post. Just realize when you've made an ass of yourself and shut your mouth...

  • Hahahaha, you're doing it aswel...replying to ancient posts that no one cares about anymore. Stop trying to stir things up and get on with your life.

  • Ahhh, the irony, right? ;)

  • What you conveniently left out of your report by Dr. Exum is that Carl Lewis had his results overturned due to him using medicine that was not illegal. Full disclosure please.

Moreover, Carl Lewis was running scorching times since way back. His records weren't out of the realm of reality for him.

  • Lewis is the man!

  • If anything can be said of Carl, even with men in latter days that have broken his records..he is by far the best technical sprinter! Best FORM of any sprinter in history BY FAR which contributed to him being #1! What a gracefull & fluid runner!!...Sprinters that have broken his records?? I truly believe drug enhanced and not nearly as technical PLUS God gifted. I've followed Carl's career since I was a kid and from FACTS based I know he is the true champion of all time! Same as Evelyn Ashford!!

  • @VibeFly Yes, aesthetically, Lewis is the most graceful runner and sprinter in

history, followed closely by Kipketer at 800 metres and Bekele

at 5 and 10 K. Bolt has lovely form too, and in full flight he looks awesome.

  • @VibeFly Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay????

  • @VibeFly very well stated, especially as it relates to Evenly Ashford...

  • @VibeFly You have to admit Frankie runs him pretty close in form. Frankie's superb. Usain's not bad either.

  • One of the greatest 100 meters ever. Six runners ran under 10 seconds in this final. Its still a world record.

  • CARL LEWUS IS the greatest sprinter EVER

Carl Lewis = The Flash Version of Michael Jordan (I'm talking about "The Flash" character in DC Comics of course)

  • I remember reading that the track surface was configured to give extra grip, thus the super-fast race. Still one of my alltime fave sprints though!

  • my favourite 100m race ever

i used to have a great poster of that finish

  • Why does a world class runner have a bad start??

  • greatest race of all times, 6 man under 10s

  • yeah and he had a bad start. can you imagine what time he would off done with a good start.

  • Lewis is just class. I remember that race all so clearly. In fact, Lewis was cramping before the race, he must have spent perhaps 90 minutes just doing start drills over and over and over again...warming his body up as Burrel was favourite this time round. It was just superb brilliance seeing Carl carve the field open and take the title. For me, Carl Lewis is the all time spint king!

  • @emanuelis8 ,

I don't think he had a bad start, but rather he kept his energy strategically for the last part of the track where he knew he'd have to use it in order to pass all the other runners. He kept his position in the group in such a way that he was not the first nor the last, only to burst in the end, when he probably knew the others would have already used their burst energy. Anyways...he's a legendary runner!

  • @flotopo yh your right, at the end of the race is when the latic acids and the tightness begins, they were all beginning to slow down and Lewis had more energy to keep his top speed right to the end. Awesome!!!

  • @emanuelis8 from experience you don't get a lactic acid buildup during a 100m dash. he is usually late out of the blocks but that is because he pushed the hardest out of the blocks out of many of the sprinters at that time. this allowed him to have a better transition than pretty much everyone else.

  • @emanuelis8 thats shit! an athlete is never tight after 100m. i'm an not a sprinter like lewis and i'm not tierd after 100m. On that distance you cant run strategically. 100% from start too beginning. ask any coach, they will say the same. yes i know, my english is horrible...

  • @emanuelis8 i doubtt that is true. it looks more like a poor start , considering its 100m lactic acid wud not have much effect on your speed

  • @flotopo Man YA'LL ARE ALL WRONG TO SAY THAT CARL LEWIS IS HOLDING BACK AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RACE. Can't no human being at this level hold back in the beginning of the race when running the 100, UNLESS YOU'RE USAIN BOLT. In this particular race, Bolt could have done it because he's fast enough. Carl Lewis had a WEAK drive phase with a strong finish. It did not have anything to do with strategizing. I'm pretty sure if Carl Lewis had it his way he would want to have a good start, not hold back.

  • @flotopo There's no strategy in the 100m, you start and go as hard as you can for the whole race.

  • @flotopo he just got better speed endurance, not lactic acid to worry about for 100, thats 200 some ppl have to be strategic about running out of available ATP, unless ur michael johnson haha. the lactic acid starts to build to a threshold where it cant be cleared fast enough because theres not enough oxygen coming in to break it down, but 100m is such a short event its get up and go lol. lewis was an exceptional 200m runner also, it would be interesting to seen have seen him at 150m

  • it's definitely the best 100m race ever seen!

  • oops my bad!
