The history of US involvement with poorer countries shows that they are MUCH wealthier after US involvement than before, usually. I think the main reason Obama has been reluctant to criticize the government of Iran is that he presume they will win. If he criticizes them and then they win, then that will make his efforts to negotiate-away their nuclear weapons program all the more difficult.

Your president likely does support the revolution, but if he makes a bold statement then the Iranian government will use it as propaganda against the opposition and say that they are American agents / Israeli spies etc and try to turn people against them through that route.

This is why UK and USA aren't making regular bold statements in support of the protesters.
