VOCAL OVERDUBBING can involve what you say there, muting her live singing and putting recording over, or it can involve having a single voice sing the song, then replay it while singing thr backing vocals.

A fine example of this is Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody; there are only 3 voices, but because of VOCAL OVERDUBbinG it sounds like several.

Aside from the slight video slag, this clip of her may be the best one I`ve seen on youtube so far. Her singing here is much better than of her live Warped tour shitty cell phone vids. Katy uses "dubbing" she has vocals in the background, like an echo on CD, Keeps costs down for extra help in travel and insures the same sound ect..

IT is very professional and saves money. Music makers lay over sound tracks to produce records in the studio. One person can make a whole band from a studio and no one would know the difference.

it is extremely hard to sing. especially live. and trying to sing live good is even more hard. she is most likely nervous in a way, which changes the tone of her voice. it is probably hard for her to hear herself as well. i dont think shes wearing an earpiece. being in the recording studio, she sounds different to herself. i would know. dont put her down. its 100% clear that she's trying her best.
