I'm a big fan of simon & garfunkel but I have this on VHS from the Smos. Bros. show & I had to laugh at the heads in the clouds lol, great song though.
To Orph88 : Thank you very much. If you will, would you recommend other Paul Simon's songs that have deeper meanings? By the way, their songs are really very good material for educational purposes as it is a start for me to understand English more than just the literal meaning in how the sentences are written.
To answer Nootminwoo... I think the song is not really as "deep" as Simon's other works, just meant to evoke a lighthearted, dreamy quality. "Tolstoy to Tinkerbell" could mean from adults to children, old and young. Berkeley to Carmel is a (cloudy) stretch along the California coast many would travel, especially hitchhikers in the sixties; "a lot of time to kill" is not a negative phrase; it means he has nothing important he must do...he's relaxed and happy.
I am not native English so sorry if I bother you. But I really want to know what they were trying to say in the "From Tolstoy to Tinker Bell.
Down from Berkeley to Carmel.
Got some pictures in my pocket and a lot of time to kill." part? It would really help if someone can explain the background so that I can study more into the lyrics.
By the way, P&G is my favorite duo. I study English from their songs a lot.
Man, I am 58 but the arguments here are second rate. I know, I am rhyming bad. Can't we all just get along? Can't we all just love one another? No? I, for one, love you.
I think the Talking Heads named themselves in reference to people on television, actually. So it's essentially the same meaning. Not to nitpick or anything ... ;)
Perhaps if you understood the period in which this song was written you could appreciate the lyricism. For example, "Hey sunshine, I haven't seen you in a long time. Why don't you show your face and bend my mind" is a reflection of the enlightening many youth were experiencing during the 60's and a poetic description of the counter-culture. The lyrics are not 7th grade level, yet it seems your English comprehension never made it passed the 6th.
@3AbyssalOrchids Hey, I made a compliment to this song at least, don't try to put me down. "The sky is gray and white and cloudy,
Sometimes I think it's hanging down on me. " This is a paraphrase of an old poet of Emily Dickinson whose name gets mentioned in another song in the album, "Dangling conversation". I think that 20 something guy who majored English literature at college showing an obvious hommage to Dickinson is kinda childish. The same could be said about Lou Reed's venus in furs.
@rainriders Why? Allusion and homage have been a part of the tradition of literature since, well, forever. Eliot's The Wasteland is sprinkled with references to the holy bible, is that childish? Steinbeck named one of his novellas The Moon is Down, a line from a Shakespeare play. Childish? I mean, I could actually go on forever. Paul Simon is simply utilizing a part of the tradition that has been occurring since it began. With that said, do you have to like his lyrics? Of course not.
@grammasrfun There's nothing wrong with "allusion and homage" as composition is a result of synthesizing elements taken from any people of any age that has influence upon you. My point is that PS did that in a premature way. He is from a wealthy Jewish family of New England and he had an exceptional elite education in literature, why would not he do better than paraphrasing 2 full sentences of a 5th graders' favorite poem? I would understand if he did this song as Tom and Jerry.
remembers watching every episode of smothers brothers. they were and still are genius and brilliant. every guest they had on their show meant something to us at the time. still means everything to me. yes empress i remember being 8 then as well and being 8 then is so much different than being 8 now. i played all the music of the 60s for my son. taught him to appreciate real music and the poetry that inspired it. thank you for sharing this wonderful gift of memories.
it's a brief, tuneful memory of liberal america....oh god - come back paul simon, bob dylan and david bowie....give us back our countries from these fascists...(usa and england)
Just picked up this tune on a 45rpm on E-Bay by the Liverpool Five. It is fantastic with multi harmonies. I found them on You Tube with some other of their fabulous recordings but not this one.
I too love this song but like other commenters I think that the cover done in 1966 by the Liverpool Five is even better than the original by S&G, I read in a magazine many years ago that somew one in the Seekers claimed to have gotten no credit for composition.
i was born in the 70's and i think these guys put out the best music. I think i have my little girl hooked on it too. she's only 2; but she dances to it in tune. i remember my mom playing it on vinyl. music now a days is too commercialized and has no meaning. there are a few exceptions out there. nothing like a simple guitar and harmony.
I totally agree, I'm 16 but I really love this music, my mum used to play it to me and my sister when we were little and we used to dance, and I love it now and I wonder why nobody makes this kind of music today. Keep playing it to your little girl!
An even better cover was done by the Liverpool Five...I have that 45rpm and it's even better than the original. The flip side "She's Got Plenty o f Love" can be found on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 2)" and that's cool too.I think that the New Seekers also recorded it later.
ive loved this song for so long. i never knew there was this video. thanks so much for posting this. simon and garfunkle are my all-time favourite artists head and shoulders above the rest.

That's one reason Cloudy is not in the movie The Graduate. The line' Hey Sunshine, I haven't seen you in a long time" refers to the original writers ex-girlfriend whom he called Sunshine.
Then if you are correct (and I don't believe you are), then both Simon and Woodley should have been wide open for a lawsuit. The line "Hey Sunshine, I haven't seen you in a long time" is obviously in congress with the theme of the song...a cloudy day. So I believe you are wrong, totally wrong.
