  • even as a kid christian bale was a phenomenal actor.

  • An amazing, beautiful and poignant part of an amazing movie. Like msfrydae, I first watched this movie in my youth. I didn't understand it and wasn't terribly impressed by it. There were some amazing scenes that stuck with me though. This was one of them. In my maturity, I've watched the movie and read the book. Spielburg did great, and I thank the uploader too.

  • What language is he singing in?

  • @SwadianRPServer I believe it's Welsh. Suo Gan is a Welsh lullaby.

  • This shows that all people feel the same, when their lives are at stake.

  • james rainbird is the one singing

    bale only mouthed the words

  • @peppermintful

The bit at the start when he starts singing (before the orchestricals start) is his voice.

Of interest (perhaps) is that he's identifying himself (and saluting) the Japanese Army suicide pilots :)

  • This movie is a Masterpeice, and everytime he sings....I feel the emotion and senereness of the story. so! Beautiful, Christian sings like a Angel. <3

  • this is the best scene I saw it in this Movie awesome Christian !!

  • i saw that mouve many times , now as when i was a kid i i think that that's one of the few film that can make a person cry ,for sadnes or even happines ..just one of millions of refuges its enough show us lots of feelings

  • THat's Batman? Wow...the times do change

  • I wonder if Christian Bale can sing like this today.. He's more of a hunk now.

  • @029Mhelz Obviously you have not heard him sing the Powerpuff Girls theme! He's still got a decent voice.

  • I gotta ask: is this the same Christian Bale that plays batman in the christopher nolen films? If so amazing how he play a rich british kid that grown up during the 2nd world war to the dark knight.

  • Beautiful movie.

  • I wonder if this scene near the end (with Suo Gan) was inspired by the ending of Kubrick's Paths of Glory?

  • So, Mr. Bale, this is you singing and not dubbed. This is still my favorite film of yours. Magnificent sound track by John Williams, perhaps his best. Chanson de Geste

Post Scriptum : there are still scenes that i cry at!

  • Bale is actually lip syncing. It's sung by James Rainbird. nevertheless, an amazing song, amazing performance, and amazing movie.

  • I too just saw this film for the first time (ever) and was glad I rented from Netflix - it was moving and very well done - great acting esp. by Bale. The music was amazing!! Suo Gan is my favorite.

  • for the ancestors

  • From this movie, I get excited while and could not forget. It's so adorable:)

  • I wonder does anyone understand the lyrics on here? I mean without looking them up on google. :P

I am interested to know if there are any Welsh speakers on youtube.

  • @PoisonP3ach Sleep my baby, at my breast, ’Tis a mother’s arms round you. Make yourself a snug, warm nest. Feel my love forever new. Harm will not meet you in sleep, Hurt will always pass you by. Child beloved, always you’ll keep, In sleep gentle, mother’s breast nigh. Sleep in peace tonight, sleep, O sleep gently, what a sight. A smile I see in slumber deep, What visions make your face bright? Are the angels above smiling, At you in your peaceful rest? ( just the start of it )

  • @PoisonP3ach suo = lull Gan = song 2nd part Are you beaming back while in Peaceful slumber on mother’s breast? Do not fear the sound, it’s a breeze Brushing leaves against the door. Do not dread the murmuring seas, Lonely waves washing the shore. Sleep child mine, there’s nothing here, While in slumber at my breast,Holy angels guard your rest. welsh start = Huna blentyn yn fy mynwes Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon; Breichiau mam sy'n dynn amdanat, Cariad mam sy dan fy mron

  • I watched this movie last night for the first time as an adult. The first time I saw it I was a kid and it was over 22 years ago, I thought it was a boring movie. I've changed my mind now, it was a brilliant movie, one of spielberg's best. Severely underated. Perhaps a bit early for it's time.

I think Steven Spielberg should consider re-releasing it on the big screen. I know it's out on dvd but it would be magnificent watching this film at a movie theatre.

  • @msfrydae

I just finished watching this movie and although it was well acted and a nice story it was a boring movie. I am not some kid who needs explosions every two second to stay entertained but this movie was really slow paced, long, and uneventful. I think if they cut everything after when he got seperated from his parents to when he was taken to the camp it would run a lot smoother. Just an 18 year olds opinion though.

  • @BMoses16 I agree it was a long movie and perhaps there are segments in there that could have been cut to make it shorter. The point I was trying to get across was that I watched this when I was younger and it was as boring as hell. Watching it again now that I am older made me understand it and realise that I liked the movie.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

  • @msfrydae

    Marvelous comment...totally agree.

This is both Spielberg and Bale's greatest work and I'd say by quite some way....although that is not to detract from or belittle their other work.

This scene puts a lump in my throat everytime...so moving and sublime.

Have to say that Suo Gan...has the same affect on me....as it does, on the people in this clip!

I want the blu-ray of this so much!

  • Just like all the reactions featured in this clip....when I hear this song, it stops me in my tracks....likewise.

  • @LisaFraggle

I think this is the greatest performance by Bale in his career to date....not to detract from his more recent offerings, it just shows how talented he truly is and has always been.

For me It is Spielberg's greatest film too.

  • @LisaFraggle I read that at the end when the song is sung it is really Christian Bale -but only the part when he is actually seen singing the words, then it switches back to Raintree's version when you see the planes and soldiers and the choir joins in --you can hear a difference in the quality of the voice ,I think it was to show how the war weathered him and changed all the innocence in him -it is an emotional version rather than polished like in the beginning

  • I cried when i was watching this movie in class :`) So beautiful

  • whattt wow i thought it was a girl singing. but he's so adorable.

  • HOLY CRAP IT'S BATMAN!!!!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!

  • this song make me wanna cry my eyes out

  • @purplelover7887 well that's why I used 'according to'....

where did you learn it's his real voice?

  • @kurisensei an interview

  • what a Faggot!!!!

  • @tmcfootball96 typical american cunt

  • Is that the leader of the resistance?

  • is it Christian Bale's actual voice?

  • @ktmbua no, it isn't:, according to Wikipedia

  • I really love this movie since I was a kid.I always watched it with my Father in our province.I think about 15 years ago.

  • Great voice, Crazy man!

  • Contrary to popular belief, this is not a song in any Asian language, even though the name, Suo Gan, further gives that impression. It is a Welsh hymn. But then who gives a damn, it's downright beautiful.

  • @darthsidious2010

A welsh lull-a-by...... the melody is hunting, but i love it, well done for pointing this out to all those who know nothing...........

  • The lyrics are "lie down chancey, on the way-ho!"

  • hes so hotttt<3

  • He sings like an angel. I`m watching this for my LA/SS class and I fell in love. <3

  • Although he was an accomplished singer, and was trained by a famous New york voice coach he did not sing this particular piece. It was performed by James Rainbird, who is an English treble from Surrey born in 1975. He was Aled Jones' understudy for Snowman.

  • @capio78 lol that just killed it, but it really doesn't sound anything like his speaking voice so I don't think I would have believed it anyway. :)

  • @Drude19091948 Yes it is him...he has an incredible voice and while he was growing up he had voice coaches and everything...god every time i hear this i get chills.

  • Yeah he sang in the Newsies, check it out

  • at the beggening it s him then they play a recored but yeah i agree with u the movie is good

  • so emotional... awesome movie, awesome song... cant believe this is only been reproduced 542 times
