The earth tribe doesn't only consist of Chinese culture, there's also many things that point to Korean culture. Toph wears a Korean traditional robe when you first see her and the houses in the earth village are also Korean. I don't know about all the other fractions but this is what I've noticed.
Earth is awesome, but there's one thing that WaterBenders can do that tops it all, although it's forbidden: BloodBending. Complete control. Can control your body, can basically suck all the blood from you, literally make you explode, ect.

When I first watched Avatar i'd wanted to be water because it was so elegant when Katara was using it. After watching everything, I figured Earth was the most practical and convenient, and I just simply love TOPH !! :)

This show is okay I guess, the fantasy world, plot, animation quality, and action is all pretty good but I think it's main flaws are its characters and the dialogue as well as the tons of unneccesary humor placed in almost every episode and in uncalled for circumstances, I think that unless it's a comedy it doesnt need to be funny all the time
They tend to be very annoying at times and they often say or do the stupidest most random crap ever. It annoys the hell out of me, Avatar is NOT a comedy show, so it didnt have to try to be funny and lighthearted all the time, it could have been more mature and serious or more intelligent instead of having comic relief all the time and especially in unnecessary moments

Yes I'm hoping The Legend of Korra will be more mature and less idiotic then Avatar. I mean Avatar does have some interesting themes and concepts and the animation and bending scenes were mostly good but I thought that Avatar didnt seem very "authentic" at times. Respectable and Mature and Realistic in my opinion, because in real life, people rarely act funny or do funny things all the time, especially in very serious moments. @gatheringleaves I would agree, (that sometimes the humor is inappropriately placed and maybe THATs why not everyone takes it seriously) BUT i feel like it ADDS character. I was disappointed (for many reasons too) in the Movie in part because of the lack of lightheartedness.
And also, have you ever noticed that almost none of the characters sound asian or have accents. About 90 percent of the characters in Avatar the Last Airbender sound like typical modern day Americans and there mostly voiced by Caucasian Americans too, there are very few black or asian or native american voice actors in Avatar. Fire could have been Japan OR Korea, considering the fact that some of the Firebenders' names are actually Korean, like Jeong Jeong. Earth also could have either China OR Korea because when Toph first deputed as a daughter of the wealthiest family in the Earth Kingdom, she was wearing what looked like a hanbok.

@DarKnightofCydonia well, yes. you're right about almost everything. i've been studying japanese language and culture for a while, and the fire nation is NOT japan. i think its a mix of everything, but there's little japanese influence, very little. i think the names are about as close as you could get, and even that's pushing it to some degree. not all the names sound japanese. however, everything else is right, and other than that, i completely agree.
K lemme ends this right here, Toph was bending the actual metal itself, she was bending the earth that didnt get fully procces into metal, and because she was blind she could "see" the earth better than pretty much anyone so she in a sense knows the earth better i suppose :P

Earthbending is cool, Metalbending was overdone, especially at the easy Toph was doing it. She bended metal as if it was nothing, that was seriously overdoing it.

Her Seismic Sense can also help her find the impurities in the metal to grab onto, while all the benders who can see rely more heavily on their vision and would have such a hard time finding those minute particles.

I mean in the Sozins Comet episode she was freaking bending metal like it was NOTHING, when nobody in the A:TLA can even bend metal at all, not even Bumi. Seeing as how Katara is listed as 14 during her duel with Master Pakku, that would make her around 64-68 when she gave birth to her. It's unlikey that Katara was even fertile at that age. Also, "Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin...." would imply that she isn't his sister.

earth, from what i have noticed, is very similar to the Korean martial art Tae Kwon Do.
it is described on the avatar wiki that earth relies on waiting for your opponent to slip up, for a golden opportunity to strike, until then, you taunt him with basic technique, keeping the advanced, more intricate ones for a final coup de grace.
all of the above is the basic idea behind the fighting styles of Tae Kwon Do, specifically my style, Ho-Am (Tiger-Rock). Not to mention 2:36 to 2:44 is Taekwondo..
earth bending consists of hung gar techniques! Which is basically tiger and crane style (kung fu) mixed into one style. The tiger represents hard power and relies on strength. The crane represents soft power!

Avatar is mostly made up of Chines martial arts (kung fu mostly), but i was saying that it reminded me of my style of taekwondo. and personally i don't think earthbending has much soft power in it ;).
Oh well, we cant drink earth, our body will turn dry without water. We cant cook with earth, we will have to eat raw meat without fire. We can't breath with earth, we will run out of oxygen without air. Well, great elements are supposed to fulfill our need in daily life, earth is precious but can't be put higher than other elements.
@TheGanstaben yea the only thing that made them start the war and lead it was sozens comet, without the comet the fire nation wouldn't stand a chance, im not saying that they are weak because they are not, the fire benders are really strong but im just saying that if it wasn't for the comet they would never be able to wipe out the airbenders so they wouldn't be able to even start the war since the reason why the war burst out was the extinction of the airbenders.
I love Earth. If I were to be any bender, Earth, hands down. However, I hate the Dai Lee. They aren't strong, but they're annoying. Really, really, annoying! And I love the Sunghi Horn in this song, like around 2:46 or something.
Fire can heat the rocks that earth bender shield themselves with. And since earth doesn't offer the same amount of cooling as water or air it loses to fire.

I didn't really like earth bending either before toph, I kinda just shrugged it off but now I can see it's a pretty awesome element to control. It's possibly the most powerful and destructive of all the elements when you think about how versatile it is. However I still stay loyal to my faves being fire and water ;D

Earthbending is cool, Metalbending was overdone, especially at the easy Toph was doing it. She bended metal as if it was nothing, that was seriously overdoing it.

@Shallowsoul25 It's the way she was earthbending the metal that made it seem so fake. Nobody else could even metal bend ANYTHING, but this little 12 year old blind girl can bend it like its paper to form armor... Toph is a good earthbender but that just seemed totally fake/stupid imo.

Her Seismic Sense can also help her find the impurities in the metal to grab onto, while all the benders who can see rely more heavily on their vision and would have such a hard time finding those minute particles.

@atjnAdfhhjea I understand that she's supposed to be a great earth bender being only 12 and blind, but they seemed to take it a little too far... I mean in the Sozins Comet episode she was freaking bending metal like it was NOTHING, when nobody in the A:TLA can even bend metal at all, not even Bumi. I'm fine with her bending metal with effort, but it was just ridiculous when she was on the FN blimp and made a metal armor in exactly 2 seconds, when it is freaking metal. Idk thats just my opinion.

@zDallasCowboys008z My opinion is it's like the most skills, practice it enough, and it will usually require less the more proficient you become at it. I can see why the lack of effort would bother some people though.

@atjnAdfhhjea That's what bothers me, she didn't nearly practice enough and were supposed to believe that she is now THAT good to be able to bend metal like paper? In the first episode she metal bended, it sorta made more sense to me because of the effort she went through to just bend it open a little, but then she just becomes a "master" at it in a mere (couple?) of months. Hell, then she should have fought Ozai because that's stupidly impossible to beat..

@borborcarcar dont you know? theyre coming out with Legend of Korra in November! i don't want to wait that long but i guess i have no choice:( Korra and Tenzin are Aang and Katara's children. She is the next avatar from the southern water tribe who learns airbending from Tenzin because he's an airbender. Obviously there's a lot more to the story than that though. Unfortunately i don't think well be seeing much of our beloved characters:( it is about Avatar though so theyre connected

@ohmigoditsL3 Where did you hear that Korra was Aang's kid? I find that hard to believe. The new series takes place 70 years after the previous one, and Korra doesn't appear to be more that 16-20. Seeing as how Katara is listed as 14 during her duel with Master Pakku, that would make her around 64-68 when she gave birth to her. It's unlikey that Katara was even fertile at that age. Also, "Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin...." would imply that she isn't his sister.

@egggirl21 really depends where you are fighting, if it's in the North Pole, obviously water,since there's no earth to bend, if in the desert, or a rough terrain, then earth rules supreme, the show keeps stating no element is better or worse than another

earth, from what i have noticed, is very similar to the Korean martial art Tae Kwon Do.
it is described on the avatar wiki that earth relies on waiting for your opponent to slip up, for a golden opportunity to strike, until then, you taunt him with basic technique, keeping the advanced, more intricate ones for a final coup de grace.
all of the above is the basic idea behind the fighting styles of Tae Kwon Do, specifically my style, Ho-Am (Tiger-Rock). Not to mention 2:36 to 2:44 is Taekwondo..

earth bending consists of hung gar techniques! Which is basically tiger and crane style (kung fu) mixed into one style. The tiger represents hard power and relies on strength. The crane represents soft power!

Avatar is mostly made up of Chines martial arts (kung fu mostly), but i was saying that it reminded me of my style of taekwondo. and personally i don't think earthbending has much soft power in it ;).

Oh well, we cant drink earth, our body will turn dry without water. We cant cook with earth, we will have to eat raw meat without fire. We can't breath with earth, we will run out of oxygen without air. Well, great elements are supposed to fulfill our need in daily life, earth is precious but can't be put higher than other elements.

@TheGanstaben yea the only thing that made them start the war and lead it was sozens comet, without the comet the fire nation wouldn't stand a chance, im not saying that they are weak because they are not, the fire benders are really strong but im just saying that if it wasn't for the comet they would never be able to wipe out the airbenders so they wouldn't be able to even start the war since the reason why the war burst out was the extinction of the airbenders.

I love Earth. If I were to be any bender, Earth, hands down. However, I hate the Dai Lee. They aren't strong, but they're annoying. Really, really, annoying! And I love the Sunghi Horn in this song, like around 2:46 or something.

Fire can heat the rocks that earth bender shield themselves with. And since earth doesn't offer the same amount of cooling as water or air it loses to fire.

I didn't really like earth bending either before toph, I kinda just shrugged it off but now I can see it's a pretty awesome element to control. It's possibly the most powerful and destructive of all the elements when you think about how versatile it is. However I still stay loyal to my faves being fire and water ;D
