The only thing that bothers me is why is his stomach bleeding? U mean to tell me a wound from 10+yrs would suddenly reopen from swinging a base ball bat? Also the diagnosis that his stomach would explode from too much exertion earlier really made that seem ludacris. Besides that great movie.
That song makes the scene. The only thing I would complain about is the over dramatic effect of the light blowing up. Still, that is one of the most classic movie scenes there is.
i just watched this movie today and i had to immediately post my comment on youtube about it. watching it made me forget and realize how much i love the game of baseball. and the movie just proves that baseball is america's past time sport.
This masterpiece is so incredibly magical - literally brings tears to my eyes watching this scene...timeless memories of a now seemingly bygone era in Hollywood - the era of REAL moviemaking

@zizwop I don't think so, in fact I think he adds to the emotion of the scene. The Robert Redford character was good natured, generous, selfless, and just an honest person in general. And the batboy clearly looked up to him...
@divebomber101 Yeah, I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I just thought maybe they paused a little too long on him standing there. I do really love this movie, and the music is just awesome. My Dad really loves this movie.
@zizwop Im sorry to say, but indeed, you might might be the only ones who thinks that the "goofy" bat boy ruins this scene. We are studying this movie in my English Honors class in highschool, and comparing it to Homer's Odyssey, specifically looking at the Hero Cycle Elements Roy encounters. This scene may not seem important, but it is developing a "Mentor", or father-son relationship between the two, something that Roy will have to become used to, considering he is now a dad. Sit down son!
@sunnygirl724 Funny, I think that was already established when they made the bat together, I'm simply saying there is a long pause where the batboy is just standing there, and it's a bit too much. I love this movie, I'm not a hater. If anything, what's really important here with the batboy is that he gets another 'special' bat since his just snapped, and what better than one that was made the way his was.
@zizwop Fair enough. Some can say this movie is a little cheesy and outdated because of the long pauses for an example, but I don't mind it in this case. It is really exemplifying Roy's natural fatherly character.

You can say its all just Hollywood magic but when I was 10yo I saw Ron Guidry throw 18 strikeouts in Yankee Stadium and it was just as inspiring in real life as this scene. It doesn't happen often but sports can be magic.
@idseer Both are works of fiction. By definition, they are both big lies... or big truths that transcend the fiction. I prefer to look at it as the latter.
I prefer Barry Levinson's version and vision (the film). His leaves room for hope. I think the version we choose says a lot about our own individual psychologies, don't you?
@TemplarReturns I grew up watching The Natural and in my humble opinion I can't imagine that movie any other way than with Roy running through and celebrating the falling sparks in a dream like environment following triumph, the movie just wouldn't be the same. THIS is the way Roy's story is meant to be for me. I won't argue with anyone who says otherwise, you can enjoy the novels ending but this is the way I feel it should've been.
@issurchaim The reason why I did not include that scene is because it wasn't about the son, it was about Hobbs finally getting his chance to shine in the sport he loved. He finally got his chance to be the person he was prevented from being when he was shot by the woman.
@TemplarReturns Actually, the point about him playing catch with his son is simple. It is about how we pass on this game to the next generation, how we inherit it from father to son. Field of Dreams makes the point even better.
@TemplarReturns Actually, it was about Hobbs finally getting his chance to shine as man, simultaneously killing the old (Wonderboy) and coming to grips with the new (being a father, passing the ball from generation to generation.) That's why those last few seconds completes the scene.
The life Roy wanted as a prospect was why he was shot. He wanted to break all the records and be the best ever; him hitting this last home run does NEITHER. If Roy continued being obsessed with being the BEST, he'd be no good to anyone, including himself . Instead, he hits the home run to save Pop Fisher, the team, and his family. But in putting the others FIRST, he ends up achieving glory. The scene at the end playing catch with his son has EVERYTHING to do with this scene.
uh you can't lie in art. Since the book was fiction. So is this movie. I can make a movie and have aliens come and zap everyone as he's making a home run. that's why it's called fiction. You can't lie in fiction, since the whole purpose of fiction is to make up a story.
I still remember the first time I watched this movie. It was with my Dad, and I was 10 years old. It was my first year in Little League. This scene captures the mystery and the magic in the game of baseball more than any other. As long as I live, I will never forget Roy Hobbs rounding the bases in the dark as the lights in the outfield are exploding in the night. This scene always inspires me and reminds me of everything that was good once....and that could be again. Pure magic and inspiration.
I remember going to the "old rockpile" in Buffalo as an fan in the crowd to see parts of the Natural filmed. Still love seeing that old stadium as part of the movie. Super baseball flick.
I remember going to the "old rockpile" in Buffalo as an fan in the crowd to see parts of the Natural filmed. Still love seeing that old stadium as part of the movie. Super baseball flick.
i didn't know the batter can take 5 minutes of the game's time, talking to the boy and examining a broken bat before going back to the home plate and say, "let's play ball."
The poor bat boy! He was obviously not an actor. I'm sure they were yelling or gesturing after him to get out of the frame after he gave Redford the new bat. Great scene anyway!
This is truly beautiful. The geniusl part is when its raining stars and u see the reflection in pop's(the coaches glasses) at 4:34. Him, and us the audience see and feel what a perfect moment in life can be when you dream. A moment of transcendence. When the bounds of our thinking and feeling dissolve.
my friends and i would go to his house in 1988, being only 11 at the time and in little league, would watch the life out of this movie. ESPECIALLY this scene. Awesome ending to a movie. Fantasy, Escapism, Glory, Emotion and pure cineamagic. Love this movie forever!
I loved this film when I first saw it 20 years ago. Seen it many times since. This scene chokes me up more even than it did two decades ago - because I have a son of my own now. And when Roy and Bobby just look at each other over the broken Wonderboy bat, and again at the exchange of the "Savoy Special", that's how me and my son look at each other almost every day. Over the biggest things, over the littlest things. And he's only five. He makes me feel like Roy Hobbs. Or Superman. Invincible.
One of the best scenes in movie history. It shows all that could be good about baseball and Americana. Hobbs the aging prodigy that gets one last shot at bat, the end of his wonder bat, the look he gives the bat boy when he hands him the bat they made together, and his long lost girl that knew he had it in him laughs as he shows the world what he had in him.
i remember first wanting to watch this movie after i had read the book which was great (a must read for any baseball fan). I was so surprised when i saw the end of the movie because it was so different. In the book Roy chases a pitch and strikes out to end the game... very sad ending, but a beautiful ending still in the book. I still love what they did in the end for this movie even though it was different. it leaves u with a good feeling.
Gives you a real sense of the 'feel" of "old time" baseball. No giant egos. No giant contracts. No police blotter stuff. No roids. No conceit. No wimpy sissies, who sit out for weeks with minor injuries.
This is the only scene in any movie that physically gives me goosebumps. It's the moment when the radio announcer just begins to fade back in that gets me every single time. What a scene.
This is "every" boy's dream who grows up playing baseball. To hit the big homerun that win's your team the game. Believe me, it is every professionals dream too. They just rarely accomplish it due to the unbelivable competition they face on a daily basis. That being said, a "Roy Hobbs" moment will happen in the future I promise. Just keep your eyes open. When it occurs it will be equally as magical as the "movie" version.
Yeah... that's what you get for poisoning someone to prevent them from doing what they love and keep them from claiming what they deserve. Greedy fools will learn that a man like this can't be bought. They are beyond the money.
woo wat the this is way different from the book wonderboy breaks and he strikes out and everyone thinks he lost the game on purpose and the book ends with a boy asking him if its all true and he cant say that it wasnt true
Robert Redford said he based the Roy Hobb's character off of Ted Williams (hence the #9 jersey he wears) However, in my opinion he reminds me more of Mickey Mantle then anyone else.
One of the best scenes in movie history. Hobbs last chance at bat ever, finding out he has a Son, The Nebraska farm boy pitcher, Breaking the wonder boy bat, The bat boy getting the Savoy Special Roy helped him make,The second glance from Roy to the bat boy then knocking out the lights while his ex girlfriend laughs because she knew his talent.THE best baseball movie ever. Field of Dreams has it's moments, but nothing compares to the Natural
Plain and simple: if your a man between the ages of 10 and 55 and you dont get a little teared up from when Bobby grabs the Savoy Special and hands it to Roy, to right through the end of this scene, you simply have no soul. Go watch Transformers 2 or something. Also, the shot at 4:35 of the shower of sparks reflected in Pop's glasses is one of my all time favorite shots in any movie.
Caleb Deschanel's ace camerawork really brings you close to Hobb's accomplishment. My favorite shot is Roy running the home stretch of his life while the sparks fall like stars. I love that one haha.
Truly beautiful cinematography and score to match. Touches you on so many different levels that it is inspiring. The celebration of human acheievement, although fleeting and temporary, is really something. The film typifies this in grand style. Redford's character remiinds us of what it is to be unshaken and noble in life's challenges. Wonderful movie. Oddly, I'm not a fan of baseball.
This is my favorite movie of all time. I grew up with a baseball coach for a dad so we watched this constantly. I don't think I've ever watched this scene without tearing up. I help coach the high school legion team in my hometown now and I wear number nine and always have a lightning bolt patch on my uniform.
Just watched it today!!!
Truly a great baseball movie!!!

Gotta love everything about this scene:
1. The iconic walk off home run
2. The fan who screams "Oh shit" as the ball hits the lights
3. The way Hobbs calmly jogs around the bases as the fireworks explode
4. The reactions of the judge, Gus, and Memo
5. The great music
Besides, there's just something so special, so incredible about a home run in baseball. Definitely one of my favorite sports movies of all time

The best scene from any sports movie. Ever. Period.

I always thought the bat boy looked kind of like Glenn Close. I wonder if that was intentional?

How could you cut the scene of him throwing a baseball to his son?

This is one of my favorite movies. Cinematography that outlines what is most powerful in our pursuit to live our dreams.

"The Natural" is one of the very few movies that is better than the book. IMHO, of course. :)

This is my favorite movie of all time. I grew up with a baseball coach for a dad so we watched this constantly. I don't think I've ever watched this scene without tearing up. I help coach the high school legion team in my hometown now and I wear number nine and always have a lightning bolt patch on my uniform.

i watched this movie when i was a 9 year old kid, and fell in love with it.
the next year i joined up little league and hit my first home run. all i could think about rounding the bases was the soundtrack to this movie.
beautiful, awe-inspiring, wonderful, magic, tragic and remarkable.
one of the best movies i have ever seen, and definetely the best sports movie ever made.
