@ShowYourWorking I had to look up and recall the legend of Romulus and Remus because I did remember something. The two brothers were nursed by a female wolf. I suppose the wolf then was honored as an important animal that started the very nation of Rome.
Of course, the eagle took the wolf's place in the imperial times, symbolizing the full glory of the empire. But for tradition's sake, I would have kept the wolf, because the nation was started by just two Trojan children. :)
@mopbrothers During the medieval ages combat did not put much focus on formations which a big shield would favor. Most of the focus was on improving armor. The buckler was used only by medieval archers, that way they could shoot a bow and arrow and still defend themselves in hand to hand.
The guy didn't get a arrow stuck in his throat, if he really did do you think they would perform surgery on the spot?
If you judge by the clip it looks like he was hit by the scorpion wich uses bolts and not arrows and if he were to be hit by one it would have pierced is neck.
What an objective view of the Romans. You must have done enormous research and conducted extensive studies to have come to such an educated conclusion. Well done! I applaud you, sir!
The lighter one would be thrown at a further distance to slow down the enemy and give the legionnaires time to throw the second pilum. At close range the heavy one would be thrown
Ah, but weren't these only the later legionaries that no longer used the pilum? I've heard of that too, that the darts were lighter, more accurate, would carry farther and were easier to use.
I'm pretty sure that the scene at the end was fake, unless the Netherlands doesn't have hospitals. It was likely a demonstration of how Roman "medics" would have worked.
Wasn't sure if you were just kidding or so, as people below answered, he is the flag barer (high honor) and treasurer of the group. He'd carry a box full of the groups money and account for spending and rations. It was a high honor to be in his position, usually an older veteran would have this position.
Was the bearer protected by the rest of the infantry? I'm sure he was experienced, but compared to the scutum, his shield doesn't seem to offer much protection against missile fire.
The officers were often arranged towards the back of wach unit and would rarely have taken a huge part in fighting due to the cumbersome banner poles they wielded. In fact, all the officers (Such as the Signifer you are referring to, and the Imaginifer) had such shields (though Centurions were often encouraged to lead their soldiers into the fray). Also upon the formation of the Testudo the officers would be brought into the center of the protective shell.
The Aquilifier, Imaginifer and the Signifer would have had the smaller, round shields, but due to the leading role of the Centurion during battle they probably would have carried the larger legionary Scutum, though he could also have carried a short staff for directing orders to his men (verbal commands being mostly useless in the heat of battle). The centurion's Optio, or lieutenants would also have used these staffs.
There were some instances where the Standards had to lead from the front along with the Centurions.
Going towards the late Imperial era, the Romans appointed a special elite band of legionaries called the Lanciarii to defend Aquilifers and other Standard bearers. They also kept an eye on the gaps between each cohort and threw missiles at any enemy soldiers trying to get through the gaps.
Its probably Archeon in Holland, I've been there and it used to be awesome. It's a sort of theme park with buildings and actors representing medieval roman and prehistoric times. But because of the lack of funds the place got smaller, they sold land and got way less actors.
I'm surprised to see that.I'm a member of the II Augusta for 2 years and it did not happened. But sometimes, yes we can get accident and it's bloody painful.

@Agent1W the eagle was the symbol of the legions long before imperial times.
tonylast47 1 year ago
@tonylast47 I wouldn't know because the eagle would have to mean something back then besides how Augustus interpreted it.

war allows the victors to imposed whatever they want to the defeated. had the nazis won, we would be labeled the murderers. it's all perspective.

Don't worry, the bolt to the neck is staged. It is part of the demonstration to show how Roman military doctors would have dealt with such an injury.

I've read that the legionary carried two pila, one lighter and one heavier. Is there a reason as to why one was heavier then the other?
000majorwinters000 3 years ago
The lighter one would be thrown at a further distance to slow down the enemy and give the legionnaires time to throw the second pilum. At close range the heavy one would be thrown
Daiquiriboy 3 years ago 2
Oh, okay. Thanks for the info, that makes plenty of sense.
000majorwinters000 3 years ago
They also carried five Plumbata, or throwing darts, but these are often ignored in popular representations of Roman legionaries

Ah, but weren't these only the later legionaries that no longer used the pilum? I've heard of that too, that the darts were lighter, more accurate, would carry farther and were easier to use.

Yes, they were mostly used by the later Imperial legions, though some at the same time as the Pila were used,
