  • Just because you are using something doesn't mean it's easy to use. For example, when I first had to use the terminal in Linux, I followed online tutorials to install packages and navigate around the filesystem, however at the time I didn't consider the terminal "easy to use".

Today, I think very differently about the terminal: A powerful tool yet different than a GUI.

Anyways that's how I look at it; I'll make the language clearer in my 2nd version of this video, which is coming soon.

  • How is GNU/Linux easy to use?

I mean, let's be fair. I use it, so no deletion, ok? Answer instead.

  • It may not be as easy to use as Windows, but during the last few years GNU/Linux has gotten much easier to use.

  • Easier than hard still doesn't mean easy.

But I guess if you count in Ubuntu (yuck) then it's not that bad. But still not nearly as easy as Windows.

Funny, but I can't seem to define why that is... It has something to do with the shell, but why that is, I don't know.

Then again, the trend of it getting easier is to be expected. (I personally dread it, but also anticipate other free OS's to emerge)

  • Well I didn't say that Linux was as easy to use as Windows, or even close, but it is getting better.

One thing that I've seen is that Linux supports more hardware devices than it did 2 or 3 years ago.

I agree that using the terminal, for example, to do very basic things (such as installing programs), might make someone turn away from Linux.

  • You don't need to use it. You've got nice pkg managers. It's just a choice :-)

Anyway, I personally like command line, so that was not my point. As I said, I dread it because more people means more misuse.

  • Well I actually prefer the terminal to the pkg managers, but I think a novice user would literally freak out if they had to install a program using the terminal.

Pkg managers are making things much easier, but as you said as more people start using Linux, the "bad guys" will start to turn their attention to Linux as an additional target.

  • thanks for the vid , keep'em coming

  • Thank you for watching. :)

  • hey nice video helped me with my questions, but, windows vista wasnt the "climax" of the microsoft story its probably going to have to take them something else to get everyone on a new os because NVIDIA 8800 dual+ vista= multiple driver failtures or crashes, people like me kinda thopught that vista with DirectX10 graphics was cool untill the ocational down fall came along. then again they might improve...

  • I do think Vista is a bit rough around the edges, but it isn't as bad as some people say, at least in my experiences.

I do think that because Vista is so greedy in resources, gaming can take a hit. Whether DX10 and other enhancements will offset that hit is the big question.

  • Nice, but I use Linux _because_ I'm a software developer. In general, it's easier to build applications under Linux. ...though it's much harder to build Window applications under Linux.

  • The only problem I see with this is Mixing Linux and UNIX together at the beginning. Linux is UNIX like, it's not UNIX or UNIX based.

  • Yes, I agree with you. I will note this in future videos.
