  • This is a amazing movie.

  • This song is just awesome.

  • 3:44 and on: This is how the military in my fantasies fight battles.

  • The sudden unison movements from 4:08 - 4:10 shock me every time. If it did nothing else, this movie gave people the chance to see Twyla Tharp's choreography.

  • here are the lyrics:Ripped open by metal explosion Caught in barbed wire Fireball Bullet shock Bayonet Electricity Shrapnel Throbbing meat Electronic data processing Black uniforms Bare feet, carbines Mail-order rifles Shoot the muscles 256 Viet Cong captured 256 Viet Cong captured Prisoners in Niggertown It's a dirty little war Three Five Zero Zero Take weapons up and begin to kill Watch the long long armies drifting home
  • I like eat acid than going to war....never too late to peace

  • 80 year cycle of large scale wars. Next big one in 2020. Better do something now.

  • @goshomg vocal warm-up anyone?

  • OooH War! What is it good for, absolutely nothing!!!

  • @TheBobgrove the economy my friend...

  • OOOHH WAR! what is it good for?! absolutely nothing!!!!

  • My favorite song from one of the best films made.

  • @lenn9 - it's the mall in Washington DC, looking towards the Washington memorial (the tall spire).

  • could someone pls tell me, where this place is? at 3:20

  • 9 people didn't come back from Nam

  • Prisoners in niggertown...

    it's a dirty little war.

  • Craziest damn thing: my stepfather -- who normally hated all rock music, most TV shows, most movies, exchanged maybe a dozen sentences with me in a week, seemed indifferent to everything but animals, & was something of a martinet -- *LOVED* this movie. He couldn't get enough of it.

Well, he'd been a soldier in WW2 (Czech), that was probably it.

  • 7 people aint got no life.

  • Consider this: The reflecting pool of the Mall where this was filmed used to be a gathering place for all sorts of public events and demonstrations. It was a place that symbolized peace. Now all those public spaces have been filled in with WAR MEMORIALS -- you can't see the view of the Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial without looking through a gigantic war memorial. And the war memorials draw more people than the memorials to Lincoln. And now, they are sure to build more.

  • @ijwi "Thus it is men mark their time in terms of the wars fought 'tween them." - "Cry Spirit, the Romantic Journey of two Souls through Time" By Debra A. F. Seiz

  • compared to the musical, the movie sucks ass

  • @SingingFool123

musical is the movie. you suck

  • @hypocrisy99 ....that makes no sense.

  • I soooo love this movie!!!

  • The speech of greatness makes me sick! Its greatness and pride? What so they can bloody die! Its more a speech saying "Boys I am sorry the government is sending you over seas. There is a small chance you be coming back. I would cry boys if I could but sorry, this is what the Politics want. So go and die and make your mama cry for she lost her child!" But I do like the song a lot but again it makes me sick for those poor kids!

  • This film from what I remember is more like a documentary about Hair than a serious attempt at a film of Hair.

  • who plays that guitar intro in the begining ?? I love it...

  • @ TrChSpHa ...hahaha, yeah, I do that a lot. I also used to say "There's a bathroom on the right" instead of bad moon on the rise....

  • it just goes to show how easy it is to bring down a power tripping, ego-maniacal system!!!

  • I love the movie version of this song!!

  • This song is relevant now as it was when the PLAY hit the stage. Which is sad.

"Christmas in Niggertown, it's a dirty little war, 3-5-0-0...."

  • @demetersdaughter "Prisoners* in Niggertown..." :P

  • @demetersdaughter yes.................

  • @demetersdaughter They are not saying christmas in niggertown, it is 'Prisoners in Niggertown'

    It's a dirty little war

    Three Five Zero Zero

Take weapons up and begin to kill

Watch the long long armies drifting home

  • LOL! Actually I always thought they were saying "Christmas" also! ;)

  • haha the general's joke was ruined by that songg

  • BEAUTIFUL....Abseloutly beautiful...it sends shivers down my spine every time I watch it (which means...about....alot of times...><)

    briliiant....

  • I bought this dvd on amazon && i cry everytime i see thee end even tho i know whats going to happend

  • Makes me wish I'd been born 16 years yearlier.

  • This ish rocks

  • The movie is a timeless masterpiece.

  • Living, if you want to call it that, in a secret restricted nuclear city controlled by clandestine subterranean facilities applying synthetic telepathy/neuro-impulse bio weapons technology, the United Nations should allow hunger strikes, and ban lush/cig techo.

  • Why r u talkin about communists? It was all about money... Stop the war!!

  • "Viet Cong losses leveling up three five zero zero per month" to General Maxwell Taylor and/or Robert MacNamara in what it calls "Front page testimony February 66".

  • Does anyone know what the significance of the number 3500 is? Is that the number of war prisoners, or something like that.

  • @neobird13 Its an Allen Ginsberg poem called "Wichita Vortex Sutra ". The whole song is based off the poem. The song is much more effective in the original Broadway show of Hair.

(Aside)If you want to see Hair how it was originally intended by the hippies who wrote it, the original show is the best way to see it.

  • @saveourplanet14 I saw it on Broadway back when it was first on. It was a lot more hard-hitting. And a whole lot more fun!

  • sorry my comment was ment to be eryen27 but it just added them to here.

  • What was Vietnam possibly gonna do to us? Invade us? good luck. We already dealt with Korea, this is how the contractors got started in war. That's y we have a ton of them in Iraq getting rich right now because of this stupid war or "police action" if you want to be technical. Then the Russians invaded Afghanistan for oil in the 80's hence the embargo. You think this is the first time weve been there WRONG. Even before the first gulf war with Daddy Bush we were there. Military IS BULLSHIT!!

  • just a by the way, without the american military all you shit heads would be dead or under communist rule.

  • its people like you why the vietnam war started, you think its right that the usa sent american troops into vietnam on some belief that the U.S. had to prevent the communists from taking over Vietnam. These politicians believed that there was a secret international alliance of communist countries, and that if Vietnam fell to the communists, they would then systematically take over the world, country by country, until the U.S. itself fell to communism.

  • During the Vietnam war, more than 47,000 Americans were killed in action and 303,000 wounded in action. The South Vietnamese suffered about 200,000 killed and 500,000 wounded. The North Vietnamese and the Vietcong suffered about 900,000 killed and an unknown number wounded. More than a million Vietnamese civilians were killed. The financial cost being about two hundred billion dollars (still think war is the right thing to go about things?) no! and i dont like being called a shit head thanks

  • @eryanNY27 Actually, war is about $, not lives. The US is run by the bankstas that own our Federal Reserve (unconst. for any private bank to have the right to print/distribute US currency). our Govt has to borrow ALL funds from the Fed, paid back w/interest (=our huge debt). WAR is the #1 moneymaker, recession #2. Wars are nothing more than legalized murder justified as patriotism for those in power to make huge $. The military exists to defend our borders, not for mass genocide elsewhere

  • @bellablue108 sure you know all about it. so..you one of those bankstas, is that how your an expert? sure, you know it all. ya, many a dictator wants to thank you for taking the blame off of them.

And dont forget the many millions worked to death, starved to death, tortured and murdered by those dictators, they thought they was murdered by evil men when you knew all along it was the bankstas.

Some in the financial realm may take part (need proof), but to lay it all on them is so foolish.

  • Comment removed

  • @bellablue108 Every man has to make the choice to walk with God or no. If a people surrenders to Christ you can bet Things will run well, protected borders, honest bankers & industry & gov. Excellent military ready to give there lives to protect others as many has done already. God will pour out the Blessings.

Going to war against saddam, taliban, Alqaeda, hitler, stalin(cold war), mao(Korea), russia(Korea, vietnam, Afghanistan) musolini, hirohito, Revolutionary and Civil war etc. were Righteous

  • Comment removed

  • @ighforever Its kinda tough to buy into a religion when the basic teaching IS LOVE yet hypocrites KILL in Christ's name...Every HUMAN can choose to walk with God or no, yet still limit GOD to human u.standing? I am that I am....I am not afraid to acknowledge God within, trust in my ability to discern, act with Love, know right from wrong. Religion does not justify bloodshed....man misinterprets the Word in all paths. NO WAR is RIGHTEOUS! LOL!!! wake up & follow Christ if this is your truth.

  • @eryanNY27 Without any military's there wouldn't be any war you fucking dumb shit...

  • @Hunoku - you really should not call names - it's not in the spirit of the play/movie. . . and it sort of show off your own ignorance.

  • @pRettyflower361 Yeah i realize that now : (

  • Army stupidity!!!

  • @ SatenWonton: What Show?

  • Sorry, that would be Ginsberg's Witchita Vortex Sutra II. The song was inspired by the poem.

  • Take a look at Allen Ginsburg's poem Witchita Vortex Sutra. The song is taken from it.

  • remember my lai? the US army shelled this hamlet and then shot any of the survivors. and threw their bodies in a ditch. this was done many many times

to this little country that posed no threat at all to us.

  • @atfatw

Well said mate, I remember the My Lai Masacre, and the inquiry after where the commanding officer tried to wriggle his way out of ordering the murder of civilians.

Gave the VietNam anti-war movement a real boost.

  • military is BULLLSHIT!!!!

  • There should be a shirt that says that!

  • what is 3-5-0-0?

  • @mcflurrie2

One source says "Three-five-zero-zero, or the number three-thousand-five-hundred, is the number of Marines who landed in Vietnam on March 8, 1965 - the first ever to be specifically designated as COMBAT troops - the official beginning of America's escalation of the War in Vietnam".

Another is the average casualties per month at the height of the war.

    I favour the first one.

  • I think it's some kinda number of casualty

  • this movie is nothing compared to the show

  • amen.

  • Brilliant!

  • which movie i this please tell me its very gunny typical armymen

  • It's Hair!

  • HAIR!!!!!!!!!

  • Hair buddy. Good movie

  • picusovi vsetko picovina

  • genius movie!!!!!

  • This movie is genius!!!!

i watched this movie almost everyday when i was between 4/9.

its got messages, anythin happens that still happens today!

    just think about it!!

    we are all the same!!!

    Just do youre thing!

  • me too

  • @les1987 It is a good movie in its own right, but is nothing like the actual show. The plot is extremely different.

  • @les1987 and this film was directed by czech director Milos Forman(czech imigrant)

  • someone should do this IRL too.

  • everytime i see this scene im wonder.

why the hell dont they just cut the wire.

just thinking it would be more efficient, faster, cheaper. and able to fix later.

  • Please don't go into the movie business.

  • This number rocks. It was a very well done movie. The last sequence where Berger gets swallowed by the transport while Bukowski tries to save him is sad but dramatic. The segues into Let the Sun Shine and the crowd scene. I knew one of the members of the production crew and he gave me the inside scoop on some parts of this movie.

  • I think the Old General was channeling Dick Cheney & Don Rumsfield.

  • I think they are emphasizing that it is 3500 black soldiers....

  • Actually it is referring to the estimated number of Viet Cong losses in the Vietnam War per month (perhaps misstating the actual number, which was 3,800)

  • human rights is just a farytale...sad, but true:-(

  • for now maybe....

  • @ wiccanWitch: I once read, the first time the US send soldiers to vietman, there were 3.500 soldiers. Iguess this means 3-5-0-0!

  • i love this part of the movie

like the power of the army was destroyed for a moment because of a song

  • @Keoh11 or is it just for a moment?

  • This may turn out to have an insanely obvious answer, but what does the 3-5-0-0 mean? o_o

  • is referring to the estimated number of Viet Cong losses in the Vietnam War per month (perhaps misstating the actual number, which was 3,800)

  • kannonen futter=albo mięso armatnie

  • so powerful...

  • This songs gives me the shivers.

So intense and superbly chaotic, full of tension.

We should enjoy the music instead of fighting over nothing.

  • like me in the teather (:

  • "Given a Vietnamese population of around 38 million during the war years, Vietnamese casualties represent a good 12-13% of the country. So anyone who thinks that US bosses aren't worse than Hitler is living on an oasis in Disneyland. "

  • I LOVE DISNEYLAND!

  • Disneyland rocks!

  • Any man who holds a gun and is ready to kill is as worse as Hitler was. Never mind if he kills one or ten or even hundred others, he's still as worse. And sorry if my english is bad, I'm swedish.

  • "Any man who holds a gun and is ready to kill is as worse as Hitler was."

Does that apply to the American G.I.'s that died assaulting Fortress Europe? How about the Finnish troops, or the Norwegians, your neighbors?

Something less than 60 years of peace in all of recorded History. It appears to me that your comment is misguided and unrealistic.

  • Are you stupid or don't you have the ability to read? It applies to any man who holds a gun and is ready to kill, I don't think I could have made it any easier for you to understand. No soldiers, no wars, that's how easy that is.

  • You're so wrong, it's ridiculous.

  • Yeah how? I know it's not that black and white but that's my basic point.

  • If you're forced to join the army, forced to hold a gun, and forced to shoot it, what are your options there? Your own death? Don't lie and tell me you'd die for your beliefs because that's crap. THAT'S what this movie is protesting. It's also opinions like yours that helped alienate thousands of soldiers from American society following Vietnam.

  • Crap? What gives you the right to call my beliefs crap? I would rather die than shoot somebody. If somebody forced me to hold a gun I would simply let go of it, and if I was forced to shoot it I would simply take the bullets out of it and press the trigger. And as I said, it's not that black and white, if you want to discuss further you can have my email.

  • Dude, as you are Swedish you just do not know "how it is". You know in Poland we have one joke: "Lets switch with Sweden the places. If Sweden will survive 50 years - we will apologize everybody and we get back to our geo location (between Germany and Russia) but seriously: One solider is more danerous that a sick painter with a power over millions??? c'mon, you should know who should be eliminated first.

  • No one should be eliminated. That's what I know. And what makes you think that just because I'm swedish I don't know how it is?

  • 1. Ok lets say you have a magic knoledge and you are back to 1939- how would you try to stop Hitler (let me help you - one bullet....)

    2. Ok, I made an assumption that as long as you are Swedish and you have probably never smell the powder (except for Nobel) it is easy to say "do not eliminate anybody" - no dude you are WRONG - It is worth to eliminate one in order to save millions. I know you had this in schools but the real world is different. Sorry it is asad truth.

  • 1. How would I stop Hitler? I wouldn't, because it would require violence.

    2. How can it be worth to eliminate one in order to save millions? If you eliminate one, the elimination will continue.

  • 1. So would you allow himt o kill you?

    2. You would not fight for your life?

  • 1. Depending on his reason, maybe.

    2. If it would require me to use violence, no. I consider myself to have lived as much as I could have, and if I died I would know that I'd be happy.

  • 1. you would be dead by know, do you get it???

    2. and thia is what I affraid of most from SWEDEN: I saw your troops on Balkans - newest weapons, big guys - and nobody respected them at all !!!!! having in mind what you said : I would affraid if ever my life would be depended to such soliders!!!! anyway I have to respect your views, nothing more. I wish you more vital energy to live your life - it is the only one you have (except for the after death life in heaven)

  • 1. Death does not scare me, only not living my life scares me.

    2. I would be afraid if my life were in anybodys hands but mine. And since I don't believe in afterlife in heaven that's not an option for me.

  • so, so SO sorry ImaniOU, I marked you as spam accidentally, you are 100% right.

  • This song scared the crap out of me when i was a child. But i still loved all of HAIR, still do. best musical ever!

  • I was in the crowd scene in DC on the filming of this segment in 1979.... quite a lot of fun to be there.

  • thats cool

  • Guess I'm showing my age though! .... I was in college at the time. A great memory.

  • Did Ronnie Dyson sing live? I'm a fan of his!

  • daah im gonna play bass on this song on school xD

  • sorry.. thought it was 3-5 a month...

  • it never gets old. i love it. and that jangly male dancer in the black beret is welcome in my dreams, anytime he's ready.

  • Poetry.

  • Do you know what 3-5-0-0 means?

  • this is Claudes draft card number

  • thank you man :D

  • Wikipedia says "The title, "Three-Five-Zero-Zero" alludes to the estimated number of Viet Cong losses in the Vietnam War per month."

  • Yes, yes I heard about that too, but 3-5-0-0 does not seem to be many death for a war.

  • nah, 3,500 was the number of troops first sent overseas in 1965.

  • Idiom, to change your aims and decisions so you can return to your original plan or state.

literally, back on the correct railway track.

  • How bizarre is it that in September, 2008, I am driving around in my car listening to the "Hair" movie musical soundtrack? Just like back in the day when people questioned the government, I am doing so now. For years, I've loved a few of the songs on it, but this being an election year, I felt compelled to buy it. And listening to it, I go thru a range of emotions and ask myself who will be the person to get this country back on track?

  • Im Canadian, loved Hair, cant help but comment, Yes, your country has come 360. All over again as far as the split in opinion/feeling about the war. I wont comment on my feeling but I can understand how this video must make you feel. Take care. Love and support to you.

  • So eery and yet so relevent to today.

  • you think that's eerie... think about what we had to go through in our class when our teacher just whipped it out and said: "we'll be singing this right after 'Bye Bye Birdie'." don't you all agree that it's such a good mix?

  • Sir Gord, are you in a performing arts school? Well it's certainly exposing you to a broad range of musicals, styles, etc.

  • Holy cow... do you go to OSA in Edmonton?

  • yes... who is this?...

  • I'm in Grade 10 Musical Theatre... initials are S.L. You probably don't know me.

  • rofl lmaoo. that's crazy. xD can't wait to perform it on friday.

  • You lucky person; got 'drafted' into the centennial performance =(. My bro will be watching!

  • Some of the words in this song, including the three five zero zero comes from a poem by Allen Ginsberg, titled "Wichita Vortex Sutra."

  • If God speaks to the world in these F'd up times, this song is scripture.

  • Also, what are the random military people yelling throughout the video? Yes, I'm uneducated.

  • Not the lyrics of the song, but at the beginning of the video.

  • 3,500 Vietnamese were killed in one month at some point. I think. A general had reported that proudly, and followed by saying it digit by digit. "Three five zero zero". At least, if I remember correctly.

And the US Army is NOT the greatest fighting force in the world. The greatest would be, or at least should be, the people! :3 (Some of which just happen to be in the US Army. Other armies and military organizations, too.)

  • About the 3 - 5 - 0 - 0: Not even the lyric writers (Rado & Ragni) remember the origins of it anymore, they also think it's some body count... but in fact 3500 was the reported number of US Marines in the first contingent deployed in Vietnam, taking the US from "advisors" in the Vietnamese conflict into full-scale war participants.

I know this since I'm about 300 years old and omnipresent. :p

  • Really? Huh. Well, now I know! :3 Thank you for informing us!

  • the lyric writer is Galt McDermot, isn't it?
