  • awesome vid that def helps ALOT!! it was very elaborate from a teacher which is nice!

  • in my opinion , the most educational video about feet technique

  • awesome video. thanks for posting

  • that was freakin hard man!!!! need to practice on this one. to improve my drumming. :) thanks alot!

  • i prefer heel toe.

  • i heard derek roddy is a dick head

  • @adambell666 YOURE a dick head! :D

  • I learned something, thx D!

  • Derek man like higgfoo said, i like how you show the weak points. Ive never heard anybody teach difficultthings like you do (or thought of it myself) and i think it makes it a hell of a lot easier to learn because it strengthens your weaker limb when playing.

  • my best drummer is Gavin harrison, but after watching this video i do respect death metal drummer specially Derek he proves that he`s a good teacher and he had explained everything very clearly

  • @larsyulia Gavin and Derek are friends afaik :)

  • this guy is a great teacher and an AWESOME drummer

  • Nice explanation, I'm getting Axis next month, and I hope that I manage to use this technique, because I don't manage to get good double bass speed

  • he feet are fucking magnetized to those things not really but jesus

  • first hit toe, second hit ball of foot?

  • @allmetaliswelcome no both toe

  • @justinbrooklyn116 well he's damn fast then

  • thank you, Derek!! i've been drumming for 25+ years & have learned more from your videos in the last few months than I have in the last decade or so from a variety of sources. these materials have really helped me re-create my drumming!

  • how the devil

  • is this derek roddy? sounds and ...looks like him

  • Comment removed

  • these r master moves. how much time did you take to learn that?

  • traditional grip?

  • yo thanks for the lesson derek! sweet tips.

  • Trick pedals are the best!!! Trick> Axis, eliminator, Iron Cobra, PDP etc...

  • But they cost as much as all of those pedals put together. D:

  • @SicSociophobiac But they are worth it. I promise you that.

  • I know. =/

I'm gonna settle for a pair of Gibraltar Intruders for now.

  • awesome man! it takes a lot of practice to get this stuff solid. i'm on my way there i just started. but i'm pushing myself harder every day.

  • That's such a nice double bass pedal.

  • excellent excercise... i will be working on this now. thanks

  • Hey man, love your videos.

I was wondering whether you, or anyone else reading this, could message me the information as to where I could buy that practice double-pedal-snare thing you have? thanks in advance!

  • Cheating on your axis pedals for Eliminators? Blasphemy! hah

  • Eliminators are good pedals brother!

  • Yup, Eliminators > Axis.

  • hard thing to redo this at home ^^

  • it sounds like a horse at the beginning

  • very fast horse xD

  • lol for some reason i cant stop thinking of Monty Python now.

  • very good.

but is there any point to playing double bubbles on the kik? i thought the point would be to have good singles for feet, after all if you are using 2 feet then you may as well get the power and drive from single strokes.. ?

Just curious. anyone answer this for me?

  • People do it for endurance purposes(it allows you to play much longer with less effort), and if you get used to it, you can go faster, more easily. If you use triggers, you really don't need the power. It's all personal preference.

  • If mastered... it's a lot less strain on your calves, ankles and legs overall, though it's much harder to get a consistent rhythm when doing double strokes, since it almost always sounds like you're accenting some of the beats, as is shown in this clip. Almost sounds like a galloping horse.

  • its more the possiblities of the double stroke, you can actually get faster with double strokes and also being able to play a quick double with either foot is incredibly handy for lamb of god esque flicks and the like

  • I wonder how beneficial it is to practice with Eliminators and play for real with the mighty Axis... probably practicing with heavier pedals can help you build up the muscles and coordination better.

  • I doubt it. Playing on two different pedals will probably help you progress, but almost certainly not as much as sticking with 1 setting.

I used to practice with iron cobras on the pads and eliminators on the kit and it felt like I had to get "used to" the pedals every time because they felt much different. I made progress, but arguably not as well as playing on solely eliminators/cobras.

  • hi there, what wud u say r the best then?.....if u cud only hav 1 set? eliminators or iron cobras?

  • use ankle weights when practiceing that helps thats what bi o

  • na dude that jacks up all the cartilage and shit like that in your knee cap

  • what does this practice pad called? For the double pedal? i want to practice my pedal but until now i still cant find those practice pad..

  • You should be able to get them at any Guitar Center.

  • sweet

  • Check recent vids of John Longstreth. He's great at this.

  • Your starting point for single stroke is the fastest tempo i can play when i've finish warming up...

  • Does john longstreth use double strokes, cuse i saw this video and it was like he was doing 400 bpm

  • Yea he does, I caught him with Origin on the Summer Slaughter Tour and he was using doubles, and not only did he do them the most efficient I've ever heard, but Origin was one of the best performances

  • I love your point about beater movement. It's all about power. This is so true with an acoustic drum with no triggers. If you want power (loudness) you need to LET the beaters fall back far enough to be able to smack the drum head with mucho force! Yes that's Spanish, for a lot! ;) Don't stop the beaters prematurely.

  • i'm sure that by now, you've improved this technique vastly.

could i ask a question though? I have this same problem, and have for about a month or two now, since i really got it down to about where this video is. do you notice how there are soft and hard hits, one for each foot (hard, soft, hard, soft)?

i'm wondering, for improvement's sake, what a good way to get rid of this problem is, because i would like every hit to be exactly the same.

  • Question: how do you manage to keep the drum bass pad still? Mine keeps on oscillating as i get faster beats and it become useless...

  • My Axis II's have velcro under the base plates. I always set my drums up on carpet. I have a roll of carpet for stages that are too smooth. I've seen pedals with spikes in front of them but careful if you are on linoleum they dig in. Also try to push down more and not forward with your foot.

  • I dont know if you can see it, but the floor is cement and the pedal is screwed in. This will give the pedal stability

  • whats the damn noise? a florida AC? haha

  • This guy is a great teacher. It makes so much sense to practice the way he does starting out at your weakest speeds but I never thought of doing it. he lays it out nicely. That's what's up nukka!

  • Wazz good nukka????

  • i did help a little, he explained very good, but it is the practicing that is hard, i cant do double strokes even on the right foot that fast. so im just gonna stick to the heal toe technice

  • at his speed, there is nothing weak about it. come on, one foot can blasting? Derek is just being nice. great drummer, cool attitude, and that book he put out is dope. go get it and see.

  • What pads is derek using?

  • I think it is the gibraltar pad

  • That's a couple of pearl eliminators i think. But in another video i saw him playing axis double-pedals and an giant step-pedal. I don't see why it matters though

  • 4:26...... "That's where I start" seems that I'm totally in the wrong way : )

  • this aint derreck roddy..i dnt think derreck roddy have a big stomach

  • listen to his voice

    and look at the snakes

    it's derek roddy, dumbass.

  • oh ok dude...i guess i have some eye problem.|\m/| HATE ETERNAL |\m/|

  • i can see your point, but first, 1000 bpm it's not possible, the world record is around 320, more or less... if you meant 1000 strokes in 60 seconds, that can be done with both techniques. listen to dog boots, donati is well over 250 bpm. second, he's not opposing, he has just a different opinion. both are very interesting, anybody can choose what fits their style better.

  • 1000 bpm is possible, that's hitting a drum 1,000 times in a minute. The world record for double strokes is exactly 1,407 or 350 bpm on a metronome. Dog boots is definitely not 250 bpm. I good friend of mine played that for a college recital (with heel toe doubles in fact) and I remember it being specifically 200-210 bpm. Virgil has about maxed out this heels up doubles and that level is around 220. Even heeltoe singles are better than this, ive seen them played at 1,130 beats in a minute.

  • yes, i know the world record count, but bpm does not stand, at least not usually, for the count of beats in a minute. it stands, as you said, on a measure for the metronome. second, ok if you like so much heel-toe, please enjoy. but there's no reason to criticize double strokes. tim waterson himself did not use the heel-toe (in the traditional way) for the 1407 record, he used the "pump", a technique he developed from heel-toe, but heavily modifing it. check his dvd, he says that in there.

  • That's true about tims record, but i think there is a reason to criticize double strokes like in the video above, education. I didn't post my previous comment to make this guy look bad in the video. He's doing a fine job. I was just trying to warn those who watch this that this technique is a bad investment of your time because you will hit a ceiling around 220 bpm with it that you wont be able to cross without heel-toe,pump,swivel, etc. So people should learn one of those, not this.

  • well it didnt help.....

  • it will if you take my advice

  • whatever.......

  • realy what are they called?

  • Actually it is. He does a fine job explaining the mechanics. He is also being humble saying that he needs to work on these doubles.

  • jealous fuck

    you douche

  • Maybe he just switched to eliminators because they're better:P

  • Super vidéo du maitre

  • Are you just extremely idiotic, or what?

  • Good!

  • F*ck, wanted to put 5 stars ~~

  • what kinda pedals are those? and yes hes AWESOME

  • pearl eliminators

  • there pearl eliminators pc 2002 interchangerble cams and he has the blue cams

  • i use the red cams seem to been slightly faster but his spring tension looks extrmely tight so maybe ill try that and see if i like the blue ones :D

  • Derek is fucken awesome in every sense of the word... good shit

  • He's such a modest role model

    bravo

  • yeah damn my axis dont fit on the pad too!

  • the thing i love about u derek is that, unlike a lot of professional drummers, ur not afraid to show where ur stugglin or a bit rough round the egdes. and it just makes u all the more better to woch and to listen to. and it also reminds us that ur still human! lol wot do u think of Dave McClain?

  • Yeah, The thing I like about Derek is that he kept on making instructional videos like he doesn't care if you learn from him and actually surpass his level, He just wants to keep on teaching everybody and and want everyone to learn. That's a very nice thing. Derek has a great personality. He's so cool.

  • you could play some kick ass latin grooves with this pattern.

  • dude awesome video it helped me alot! How do you like the elimanators? I have P 122 TW's and Im thinkin of getting elimanators, but I dunno, any advice?

  • wow. hes using pearl eliminators and not axis? wow.

  • I'm guessing it's because he wants to work his feet more so it's even easier to do on his Axis pedals.

  • his Axis double wouldnt fit on the pad lol

  • thats a gibraltar pad so they would

the pearl pads don't fit the axis

i think hes doing a clinic and had to use the pedals they supplied

  • i know the singles fit on there, but i remember reading on his forum that he said that his axis double pedal wouldnt fit on there. and he's not doing a clinic, that's his house. i can tell from the snakes in the back

  • axis double is just two singles basically

the main pedal isnt any bigger on a double than on a single

axis single and double fit on a gibraltar pad

but theres vids of him doing video lessons on an eliminator so maybe we're both wrong

  • Derek you suck.... jk! Im just jealous lol

  • this guy, has got 2 be one of the most helpful drummers ever

  • yeah i agree with you dude!! :D

    and George kollias too!

  • Thanks for this video Derek! I hadnt seen this yet.

Oh and I agree with the shoe question being more than just valid... I play barefoot and if I wear so much as socks my performance suffers greatly.

  • & to think I'm still stuck with double strokes on my hand!!!....:P

Such videos make you realize that there's no limit to improving your skills.....Derek Roddy is one true drummer.

  • i love how much of a perfectionist he is

    xD

  • What shoes are you wearing in this video?

    Thanks for this nice lesson.

    Greets

  • thank you, this helped.

  • And this technique Derek is showing us....MAAAAN is it hard at first! Took me about 2 months to get the basics down, but I've still got a long way to go before I can play these without thinking.

  • you are great derek, but your left leg sounds like doing one stroke, you should work on the second stroke on that leg.. same happens to me

  • This vid is from August 2006 im sure hes got it now lol.

  • hahaha yeah, i look at the video info but not at the date.. :P

  • virgil donati who??....

  • rightttt.....lets not get carried away here

  • can you replace the chain drive in a Pearl P122TW into a belt drive? and what do you think is the best beaters to use?

  • i have the eliminaters u can buy a kevlar belt drive, ive tried a few different beaters and still go back to the quad beaters that came with it.

  • what shoes he's wearing?

  • what kind of questions are you asking here dude?..

the next thing would be what colours his boxers are?! x)

  • it's not a ridiculous question. the type of footware (or lack thereof) could affect performance. i personally play better in Chuck Taylor low tops than with high tops, for instance (though i just ripped up some old high tops)

  • It's not a ridiculous question at all. If you are a drummer (I'm talking advanced drummer, not meat n' potatoes), then you should know that footware DEFINITELY affects your drum performance, especially on double kick. SherudoPaulson is 100% correct. If I don't play in Sketcher runner shoes, then I have a much harder time playing. It's different for anyone. For instance, lots of drummers go barefoot, some wear nothing but socks. I need shoes for the traction, especially for blastbeats.

  • i'll try it later... same pedals as mine... thanks to this video...

  • What kind of pedals are those?

  • They look like Pearl Eliminators.

  • dang that was a very good breakdown

  • dammit, he's a genius!

  • o my god! derek the best!

  • derek roddy ?

  • Yes, it is.

  • Eto kruto ochen kruto Derek Roody molodec.

  • to the guy who thinks heel toe is cheating, there is no wrong way to do something on the drums. All you are trying to achieve is a sound, technique is not everything, whatever works for you,its not a competition, thats seems to be a big deal these days,if you want competition go play football or something of that nature.

  • thats right

  • dead on!!

  • wow i need to try this technique it seems like it would work very well for me thank you!!

  • heel toe isnt cheating, its just a different style.

  • how high up does derek sit on his stool? cause im think im sitting too high (my bass drums are both 24" :( )

but it doesnt look like hes sitting too low either

    does anyone have any suggestions?

    thanks

  • As long as your pedals are compatible with a human foot, height shouldn't be a problem unless the toms you have, lies higher than you can comfortably reach. I wonder how your bass drum sounds like.

  • like cannons

although i wish i could get 24" with a depth more then 18"

  • best double bass lesson I've seen in LONG TIME! Thank you!

  • thank you!

  • pros seem to like it, when the beater distance is far over 6 inches

  • Informative. I'll have to pay a little more attention to Roddy in the future.

  • hahah joey who?????

  • it´s not thomas lang, it´s Derek Roddy

  • for those who not know... this is derek roddy.....

i was looking for this video... thanks

  • so does that make you better than him??? i dont think so moron...

  • haha i can't believe the comment posted below. that's derek roddy man.

i wish derek could be my teacher. i'd love to learn with someone as sick of a drummer as derek roddy. and not just because he's fast and stuff.

  • LOL joey sucks, more than ever if u put him against people like Kollias, Roddy (and many many more) ...

  • Is that a serious question?

  • lol are u serious??? that's derek roddy, from Nile, Hate Eternal.... just crazy... and believe me,his doubles are not really good, his left foot works really bad (if u confront it to his amazing skills), he's fucking amazing

  • he´s very good!!!

  • he is Derek Roddy,

    hate eternal?

  • he left hate eternal 2 years ago, i don't know what band he is in now

  • he's now in the band called Today is the day, if i remember the name correctly.

  • serpent rise

  • in the pro mark ads it says today is the day

  • he´s at "today is the day" now!

  • i never understood this, why play double strokes, when you can play singles. i think singles give a more even sound.

  • man i dont understand... he explains 2 play with his toe's down but i just play flat footed?? ne got ne ideas what 2 do??? i find it wayyyyy 2 uncomfortable 2 play toe's down... if any one can, can u check out my video of me playin double kick...

  • I don't know, he talks about playing flatfoot too, as in your whole foot hitting the pedal at once(not heeldown). But maybe this is just the technique for doubles.

  • wow!

  • got my vans on but they look like sneakers!

  • since when does he play traditional grip???

  • Derek has some very well thought out and understandable teaching technique. I love his positive encouragement and reminder that essentially "anybody can do it with the right amount of practice." He's a great instructor!

  • Sick shit. My Imperium vid was done with double strokes.

  • i love derrek! it seems to me that he never stops being a human like other stars! and this technik is very good and well explained! thank u man!

and he's wearing vans. i ve got the same shoes :)

    chers

  • Sick as fuck
