Derek man like higgfoo said, i like how you show the weak points. Ive never heard anybody teach difficultthings like you do (or thought of it myself) and i think it makes it a hell of a lot easier to learn because it strengthens your weaker limb when playing.
my best drummer is Gavin harrison, but after watching this video i do respect death metal drummer specially Derek he proves that he`s a good teacher and he had explained everything very clearly
thank you, Derek!! i've been drumming for 25+ years & have learned more from your videos in the last few months than I have in the last decade or so from a variety of sources. these materials have really helped me re-create my drumming!
I was wondering whether you, or anyone else reading this, could message me the information as to where I could buy that practice double-pedal-snare thing you have? thanks in advance!
but is there any point to playing double bubbles on the kik? i thought the point would be to have good singles for feet, after all if you are using 2 feet then you may as well get the power and drive from single strokes.. ?
People do it for endurance purposes(it allows you to play much longer with less effort), and if you get used to it, you can go faster, more easily. If you use triggers, you really don't need the power. It's all personal preference.
If mastered... it's a lot less strain on your calves, ankles and legs overall, though it's much harder to get a consistent rhythm when doing double strokes, since it almost always sounds like you're accenting some of the beats, as is shown in this clip. Almost sounds like a galloping horse.
its more the possiblities of the double stroke, you can actually get faster with double strokes and also being able to play a quick double with either foot is incredibly handy for lamb of god esque flicks and the like
I wonder how beneficial it is to practice with Eliminators and play for real with the mighty Axis... probably practicing with heavier pedals can help you build up the muscles and coordination better.
I doubt it. Playing on two different pedals will probably help you progress, but almost certainly not as much as sticking with 1 setting.
I used to practice with iron cobras on the pads and eliminators on the kit and it felt like I had to get "used to" the pedals every time because they felt much different. I made progress, but arguably not as well as playing on solely eliminators/cobras.
Yea he does, I caught him with Origin on the Summer Slaughter Tour and he was using doubles, and not only did he do them the most efficient I've ever heard, but Origin was one of the best performances
I love your point about beater movement. It's all about power. This is so true with an acoustic drum with no triggers. If you want power (loudness) you need to LET the beaters fall back far enough to be able to smack the drum head with mucho force! Yes that's Spanish, for a lot! ;) Don't stop the beaters prematurely.
i'm sure that by now, you've improved this technique vastly.
could i ask a question though? I have this same problem, and have for about a month or two now, since i really got it down to about where this video is. do you notice how there are soft and hard hits, one for each foot (hard, soft, hard, soft)?
i'm wondering, for improvement's sake, what a good way to get rid of this problem is, because i would like every hit to be exactly the same.
My Axis II's have velcro under the base plates. I always set my drums up on carpet. I have a roll of carpet for stages that are too smooth. I've seen pedals with spikes in front of them but careful if you are on linoleum they dig in. Also try to push down more and not forward with your foot.
This guy is a great teacher. It makes so much sense to practice the way he does starting out at your weakest speeds but I never thought of doing it. he lays it out nicely. That's what's up nukka!
i did help a little, he explained very good, but it is the practicing that is hard, i cant do double strokes even on the right foot that fast. so im just gonna stick to the heal toe technice
at his speed, there is nothing weak about it. come on, one foot can blasting? Derek is just being nice. great drummer, cool attitude, and that book he put out is dope. go get it and see.
That's a couple of pearl eliminators i think. But in another video i saw him playing axis double-pedals and an giant step-pedal. I don't see why it matters though
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm not sure what the big deal is about people opposing the heel-toe technique. At the speed shown, you can easily play with heel-toe just as powerfully, and eventually you'll be able to also play over 1000 bpm. With this technique you will never be able to play that fast and a good heel-toe player can play anything you can at the same volume. If you're looking for a lifetime of improvement and development, this technique is a bad investment. Just trying to help.
i can see your point, but first, 1000 bpm it's not possible, the world record is around 320, more or less... if you meant 1000 strokes in 60 seconds, that can be done with both techniques. listen to dog boots, donati is well over 250 bpm. second, he's not opposing, he has just a different opinion. both are very interesting, anybody can choose what fits their style better.
1000 bpm is possible, that's hitting a drum 1,000 times in a minute. The world record for double strokes is exactly 1,407 or 350 bpm on a metronome. Dog boots is definitely not 250 bpm. I good friend of mine played that for a college recital (with heel toe doubles in fact) and I remember it being specifically 200-210 bpm. Virgil has about maxed out this heels up doubles and that level is around 220. Even heeltoe singles are better than this, ive seen them played at 1,130 beats in a minute.
yes, i know the world record count, but bpm does not stand, at least not usually, for the count of beats in a minute. it stands, as you said, on a measure for the metronome. second, ok if you like so much heel-toe, please enjoy. but there's no reason to criticize double strokes. tim waterson himself did not use the heel-toe (in the traditional way) for the 1407 record, he used the "pump", a technique he developed from heel-toe, but heavily modifing it. check his dvd, he says that in there.
That's true about tims record, but i think there is a reason to criticize double strokes like in the video above, education. I didn't post my previous comment to make this guy look bad in the video. He's doing a fine job. I was just trying to warn those who watch this that this technique is a bad investment of your time because you will hit a ceiling around 220 bpm with it that you wont be able to cross without heel-toe,pump,swivel, etc. So people should learn one of those, not this.
the thing i love about u derek is that, unlike a lot of professional drummers, ur not afraid to show where ur stugglin or a bit rough round the egdes. and it just makes u all the more better to woch and to listen to. and it also reminds us that ur still human! lol wot do u think of Dave McClain?
Yeah, The thing I like about Derek is that he kept on making instructional videos like he doesn't care if you learn from him and actually surpass his level, He just wants to keep on teaching everybody and and want everyone to learn. That's a very nice thing. Derek has a great personality. He's so cool.
dude awesome video it helped me alot! How do you like the elimanators? I have P 122 TW's and Im thinkin of getting elimanators, but I dunno, any advice?
i know the singles fit on there, but i remember reading on his forum that he said that his axis double pedal wouldnt fit on there. and he's not doing a clinic, that's his house. i can tell from the snakes in the back
And this technique Derek is showing us....MAAAAN is it hard at first! Took me about 2 months to get the basics down, but I've still got a long way to go before I can play these without thinking.
it's not a ridiculous question. the type of footware (or lack thereof) could affect performance. i personally play better in Chuck Taylor low tops than with high tops, for instance (though i just ripped up some old high tops)
It's not a ridiculous question at all. If you are a drummer (I'm talking advanced drummer, not meat n' potatoes), then you should know that footware DEFINITELY affects your drum performance, especially on double kick. SherudoPaulson is 100% correct. If I don't play in Sketcher runner shoes, then I have a much harder time playing. It's different for anyone. For instance, lots of drummers go barefoot, some wear nothing but socks. I need shoes for the traction, especially for blastbeats.
to the guy who thinks heel toe is cheating, there is no wrong way to do something on the drums. All you are trying to achieve is a sound, technique is not everything, whatever works for you,its not a competition, thats seems to be a big deal these days,if you want competition go play football or something of that nature.
As long as your pedals are compatible with a human foot, height shouldn't be a problem unless the toms you have, lies higher than you can comfortably reach. I wonder how your bass drum sounds like.

He got big as a death metal drummer in Hate Eternal, now he's in Today Is the day. He usually just jams with folks from latin, blues, metal, all dat shit.
lol are u serious??? that's derek roddy, from Nile, Hate Eternal.... just crazy... and believe me,his doubles are not really good, his left foot works really bad (if u confront it to his amazing skills), he's fucking amazing
man i dont understand... he explains 2 play with his toe's down but i just play flat footed?? ne got ne ideas what 2 do??? i find it wayyyyy 2 uncomfortable 2 play toe's down... if any one can, can u check out my video of me playin double kick...
I don't know, he talks about playing flatfoot too, as in your whole foot hitting the pedal at once(not heeldown). But maybe this is just the technique for doubles.
Derek has some very well thought out and understandable teaching technique. I love his positive encouragement and reminder that essentially "anybody can do it with the right amount of practice." He's a great instructor!

As long as your pedals are compatible with a human foot, height shouldn't be a problem unless the toms you have, lies higher than you can comfortably reach. I wonder how your bass drum sounds like.
KhaLa90 3 years ago
like cannons
although i wish i could get 24" with a depth more then 18"

i wish derek could be my teacher. i'd love to learn with someone as sick of a drummer as derek roddy. and not just because he's fast and stuff.

He got big as a death metal drummer in Hate Eternal, now he's in Today Is the day. He usually just jams with folks from latin, blues, metal, all dat shit.

i never understood this, why play double strokes, when you can play singles. i think singles give a more even sound.
ryan10101 4 years ago
man i dont understand... he explains 2 play with his toe's down but i just play flat footed?? ne got ne ideas what 2 do??? i find it wayyyyy 2 uncomfortable 2 play toe's down... if any one can, can u check out my video of me playin double kick...
traviszildjianbarker 4 years ago
I don't know, he talks about playing flatfoot too, as in your whole foot hitting the pedal at once(not heeldown). But maybe this is just the technique for doubles.

Derek has some very well thought out and understandable teaching technique. I love his positive encouragement and reminder that essentially "anybody can do it with the right amount of practice." He's a great instructor!
