Did anyone else notice the unusual hand position when she plays the intro? It reminds me of a good girl holding her hands atop her lap - visible for all to see. It's as if she is communicating, see, I'm a good girl. Now hear me sing.
yup...pure sex! it IS so freakin rad that they allowed songs with this kinda context on late night tv back then...we can't really say the same for now!
yup, well said important woman, she DOES define female sex appeal. word. still...even now. awesome tori...i hope u keep straddling piano benches for years to come!

singing praise sing away he's in my pumpkin pj's lay your book on my chest feel the word, feel the word, feel the word. feel the word, feel the word, feel that, well I could have, I should have, I could have flown away
@CupidRival Hmmm, no. In the song she asks the icicle to "keep watch" for her. My interpretation of that is she has as long as it takes for the icicle to melt to get off.
@CupidRival not literally an icicle. her hand, which is as cold as ice, representing the frozen parts of her. while her sexuality is warm and her private core, which she leans on for support in a place (her religious household, family) where she feels alone and isolated.
@skatapoopy haha that's probably why they let her play it - because they didn't know. Until you really examine the lyrics, it just sounds like she's singing about icicles and snow.
@kevvie100 I also didn't know for a long time Cornflake Girl is about female castration. I always thought it was about a girl who joined a clique and they decided to kill her!
@skatapoopy Same here haha. I remember there was once this TV show with Tori on, and they told people the song was about that, and everyone was like "WTF??" and "How does that even work?"
I only know this from CD and my native language isn't English, so i'd like to know if this is a dialect how she sings "lay" here? Or is it just for the performance?
dboles27 - She's like a siamese cat who gets cross-eyed when you stroke the fur. The music strokes Tori's mind, I do believe. It sure sends me into cross-eyed mode from time to time.
most definitely. judging from the thumbs downs, apparently people think i was insulting her. as if noticing how she physically responds to the music she's making is somehow a bad thing.
Avril20th - I caught a short clip of her way back and was instantly hooked. There's a lot of listeners who'd tell you the same thing. She's a truly great artist in my opinion.
I think that she is not so defiant. I think she is being more intellectual than the average 'defiant' atheist. I believe, based on reading and seeing many of her interviews, she is making a reference to the canonization of the scriptures and the politics involved in that process. She's mentioned her admiration of Jesus many times. Her problem is with the 'church'. Being a sympathetic PK, "Preacher's Kid", I can relate.
Whatever the details of her defiance, she is being defiant. Please don't feel bad about yourself VenusMasque. I think the same thing when I see her singing that line. It doesn't mean I am stupid and don't understand what she means, and I don't know why anyone should assume you don't either. Sometimes I'm baffled by how mean and judgemental people can be.
Icicle definitely gives an impressionistic effect, as Tori described the whole of Under The Pink. Ugh why did have to be 5 in 1994. If I could go back in time, the first thing I'd do is tell my mom to take me to every Tori Amos concert.
yeah i know how you feel(i was born in 1989 too) actually one of the reasons i like tori is she reminds me of my childhood, i know i was subcontiously listening to tori when i was younger. her music wouldn't seem so familiar otherwise. the first time i heard Winter as a young teen it was like a blast from the past. her music makes me feel warm and safe. her music is like home to me.
Haha.. Same here.. I was born in 1991... I had no idea who Tori was until I became a fan but I vaguely remember it from when I was little.. I remember hearing Crucify and being suprised I know the words lol
The music matters so much more, I didn't even notice. And you have to remember that this is 14 years ago and we just wore different clothes and makeup back then! Especially Tori - heck, when i saw her in 1994 she had on a BATHING SUIT and bell bottoms :) It was awesome!
as far as all these "shes not as good as she used to be" comments,i dont care if shes not quite as edgy anymore.Shes got her hubby, kiddy and is obviously a lot happier.Man,a 1000 icicles wouldve killed her.I dont grudge her a little middle aged paunch hahahaha i fucking love tori :-)
Me too!!! I am glad to see I am not the only one. I have liked only 2 songs from Scarlet's Walk, Bee Keeper and Doll Posse. These last 3 efforts are disappointing to me.
I disagree incredibly. As a musician, I find her complex melodies to be very entrancing and mind-opening, but I can see how some people can only find pleasing what their cognitive ability will allow.
Cognitive ability and so-called taste aren't directly correlated, and if you decide to demand evidence (even though the notion seems pretty commonsense), I WILL dredge it up.
What a horribly pretentious comment. I'm seriously wrinkling my nose in disgust.
I bet that piano bench ha a nice glaze on it.
