....I highly doubt that anything was wrong with the touch pad. Normally all equipment is tested before the meet takes place. If the equipment is damaged, it is removed. If a swimmer is not right on with hitting a touch pad they are screwed, period. I always tell my swimmers to smack the hell out of that thing every time. Swimmers understand that it doesn't matter if there is video footage of them touching first, it is all about that dang touch pad! Swimmers have prior knowledge this.....
I'm a swim coach and in the world of swimming your eyes don't matter, unless your an official. What matters is what that touch pad registers during an event and what the officials call.....

In Athens Phelps was only 19, now is an adult swimmer and man. I guess it's very knavish entangling racism and other bullshit (Cavic swims in America since ever).

The only event the two of them swam together was the 200 free, and Thorpe's record was shattered by massive margin. Phelps did it in under 1:43, Thorpe's best was under 1:45. Phelps would have beat him by more than a body length if he went to Beijing with his best time.

Cavic was born and raised in USA and he is still living and training there.His parents are also US citizens.
He was smart enough to not challenge the decision because he is not stupid to risk his carerre and life for something he can not change.

Dude when the guy himself says that he didnt win i think we should go with that. Im a Serbian an im proud that Milorad even got so close to beating Phelps and he took a silver medal what i think is amazing.
Keep an eye on Milorad the next couple of years he's not done yet. :)

There's been no conspiracy, Cavic was out touched by Phelps. That's it.
By the way, although there are many good reasons to dislike (and even hate) America, Michael Phelps is certainly not one of them.
He's an amazing champion and a fantastic guy.
Hope Cavic will be more lucky next time, he's great too.

Not dissing america just the guy that was reviewing the video was american but thats not the point Mike Cavic is American/Serbian his coach american but i bet the chinese rigged the race to make sure that Phelps would win 8 gold but no matter what Cavic has made history and im happy for him :D he deserves gold i think but hes happy no matter what and at least your not being racist to all these other people on youtube are dissing the serbs just cause they came in second your not ur really cool :P

I don't condone racism even as an anonymous user, cause that's incredibly cowardly, and I completely agree with you on that. However, it's just hard for me to take in the conspiracy theory that the Chinese rigged the game, esp because they want to beat America, (in medal standings) so I highly doubt they would've done that.
I simply think Phelps out-touched Cavic. As he continued his fly stroke with full speed, whilst Cavic was gliding. Despite that I think they both should've tied for gold.

....I highly doubt that anything was wrong with the touch pad. Normally all equipment is tested before the meet takes place. If the equipment is damaged, it is removed. If a swimmer is not right on with hitting a touch pad they are screwed, period. I always tell my swimmers to smack the hell out of that thing every time. Swimmers understand that it doesn't matter if there is video footage of them touching first, it is all about that dang touch pad! Swimmers have prior knowledge this.....

I'm a swim coach and in the world of swimming your eyes don't matter, unless your an official. What matters is what that touch pad registers during an event and what the officials call.....

Excellent interview, but I hope you guys do a post-mortem where you tell us what it was like to see that race live. My family and I were up out of our seats, and all of us thought for sure that Cavic beat Michael to the wall. It was 2004 (and 2007) all over again, but somehow he still got there. It was unbelievable.
Even with the cool FINA pics, I'm wondering if there are people out there who still disagree with the result? Is there a genuine controversy?

I wonder if but for electronic timing, they'd call this a tie. It is amazing to watch the slow mo replay with Michael's quick hands getting the wall in what had to be something on the order of millimeters ahead of Cavic. Wonderful. Love this and the Coventry interview. Keep them coming.
