The Merchant actually left without warning. In the ending before Leon leaves with Ashley, we don't see him anywhere but the blue torches.

And yes, I do know the meaning of outtakes.

However, if the Merchant really did not survive, that would be an "indirect explanation" why he did not show up in RE5.
