People forget the biggest play of this game was not the Montana to Clark TD pass but the tackle made by Eric Wright on Drew Pearson on the next series. It saved a TD and the game for the 49ers but you never hear Montana, Clark,or Walsh (when he was alive) talk about it. Its all about Montana.
Everson Walls played one hell of a game that day. He picked off 2 passes, and recovered a fumble, but nobody remembers that. All anyone remembers is Dwight Clark burning him for the TD.
I was only 5 when this game was, originally, played, but watching it now, it's one of the greatest games I've ever seen. Had to be great to be a Niners fan!
Montana's pass to Clark still amazes me to this day
I'm a Giants fan. I HATED the Niners in the middle, to late 1980's. So many BANDWAGON kids in my school. These same 49er fans would become Cowboy fans 2 years later.
Looking back on it now, I respect the hell out of so many GREAT players on The Niners. I always liked Rice, but now there's so many guys I'm glad I got to watch play.
I was happy for The Niners great season this year. You guys are headed in the right direction. You were right there this year. Turnovers killed you against us.
The Super Bowl win for the '81 Niners was big-time anti-climactic. Nothing is better than watching your favourite team beat the media lap-dog Cowboys on a last minute play in the championship game. As a Packers fan I can relate to Niners fans who saw that NFC title game.
@megaibrahim100 NFL Films were actually going to call the Steelers "America's Team", but the Rooneys didn't like the notion. I think Art Rooney himself said, "We're Pittsburgh's team."
49ers are going to win the Super Bowl this year. Does anyone relize that in 1980 and '81 they went from 6-10 to 13-3 and winning the Super Bowl and now in 2010 and '11 they did the same thing?
Wow! This year's Niners Team so eerily resembles that 81' Team that won the first SB. This season has been phenomenal from start to finish at 13-3. Harbaugh must have seen this video or clips of it as he was planning for the season. No matter how hard or improbable it may be, they made it possible. The Saints and Packers better watch out, the Niners are not going to back down to anyone and I believe history could very well repeat itself. Go Niners!
30 years later and history is set to repeat itself. in 1980 they were 6-10 just like 2010 they were 6-10. 1981 they were 13-3 and now they are 13-3. Bill Walsh was coach of the year and harbaugh no doubt will be coach of the year this year. In 81 they won the superbowl. hope they do the same this year
That was wrong when they didn't have that 49er-Cowboy game on the halftime highlights, but the Cowboys were the league darlings at the time. That would be like the league not wanting to show negative highlights of the Patriots today.
What is interesting is that San Fran would eventually be in that role that Dallas had. The Niners had their butts kissed by everyone by the 90's.
It is now 30 years later and the 49ers are having one of thier best years in a long time. (10-3 right now) After losing the last game yesterday, they all need to watch this re-cap of the 1981 season and try to learn from it. They can do it again. As a long time niner fan, I really want to see them go all the way again and make it to the superbowl. Then WIN it !!! - Nothing is impossible. - GO 49er's GO ! (Thumbs up if you agree.)
Now they are 11-3 after beating the Steelers tonight on Monday night football. (20 to 3) Way to go guys. Now THAT'S the way to play football. Keep it up. Great game !
Listen, I'm a diehard 49ers fan but this team was an abberation. Fear is a concept that devoids a utopian belief of Nihilism w/out Nietzsche and other contributions.
28:02 THE WAY THEY PLAYED..Other than fans who watched this dynasty play every sunday/monday, people don't understand how inspiring these 49er teams played..It's like they played with another spirit..I think the 60's packers played methodical/machine like football..The 70's steelers overwhelmed you with all that talent..The 90's cowboys IMO underachieved with all that talent..But no dynasty has any more dramatic/inspiring games...
@apollo792 Like when they would TYPICALLY turn up their level of play in December...Look at that niner/eagle game in 1989 on youtube...I remember 2 games in 1995 against the Cowboys and the Dolphins when they were just playing at another/higher speed...Like Bill Walsh would always say with his boxing analogies "BEAT YOUR MAN TO THE PUNCH"...It was really inspiring to see them play at that level..
29:18 Like a young knight going out to earn his manhood..This was like Pat Summerall would put it "The young upstarts against the establishment."..The roles would be reversed 11 years later...Today it would be like if a young dynasty on the rise would have to face the Patriots in the AFC Title game to be truely champions.....
